I am surprised why, loving us so dearly and being always ready not only to help us in word and deed, but also to suffer because of us (as we know and could not but know given my sincere love for you), you have never written to us, even though we have now become close to you and my venerable and most famous brother Livanius has arrived here. I say this not to condemn you, but out of a feeling of sorrow. I am ardently disposed to your reverence not for anything else, but first of all because you care with all zeal for your soul and serve as a common haven for those in dire need, eliminating poverty, helping widowhood, alleviating the situation of orphans and replacing a father for everyone. I love you dearly for this, and therefore I would like to have correspondence with your reverence. Give us this pleasure and satisfy our desire. Receiving from such a dear person as you, handwritten letters with news about your health and the prosperity of your entire home, we will find in them, amid the hardships of our life in the desert, an extraordinary consolation for ourselves.
