Few of the works of Sarapion 1, Bishop of Tmuit, are known to us at the present time, and yet Christian antiquity considered him a very prolific writer, with a deep theological mind and extensive erudition for his time. “Saint Sarapion, according to Blessed Jerome, revealed in his writings such an extensive acquaintance with philosophical doctrines and opinions that you do not know what to be surprised in them first of all - the erudition of the age or the deep knowledge of St. Scriptures" 2. Among his contemporaries, according to the same writer, “for his excellent talents,” he even received the nickname “scholastic,” i.e. husband of science and education 3. Unfortunately, we know very little about the personality of this remarkable literary figure of the early 4th century, usually called the “golden one.” The life of this saint was not preserved even in Latin martyrologies, despite the fact that the Western Church very early canonized Sarapion of Tmuit as a saint and established the celebration of his memory on the 21st day of the month of March 4. Therefore, in order to outline the personality of the present writer, at least in general strokes, we need to extract certain features of his fruitful and versatile activity from the biographies of other famous persons in history, contemporaries of the Tmuit archpastor, and, in particular, from the biography and works of the famous archpastor of the Alexandria Church of St. Athanasius the Great. This is the information, based on the above data, that we can inform our readers about the personality of the 4th century writer, whom the historian Socrates calls “the angel of the Church of Tmuite” (Ὁ τῆς Θμουϊτῶν ἐκκλησίας ἄγγελος) 5 . Numbered among the clergy of the Alexandrian Church and, as some believe (for example, Philip Sedet), already in the rank of presbyter of one church in Alexandria itself, Sarapion was appointed after Theognostus (about 282) as the head of the catechetical school of Alexandria. It was here, in all likelihood, that he became close to St. Afanasy and began those friendly, heartfelt relationships that were not broken throughout their entire troubled life until their death. During the Arian unrest, Sarapion left the aforementioned position and retired to the desert, so that there, in silence and solitude, he could lead a contemplative monastic life, the high advantages of which he well understood and eloquently described in his famous “letter to the monks” (Ὁ τῆς Θμουϊτῶν ἐκκλησίας ἄγγελος Ἐπιστολὴ πρὸς μονάζοντας) 6 . The fame of his highly ascetic exploits quickly spread throughout Egypt and attracted whole crowds of hermit lovers to him. In a short time, a monastic community of 10,000 people 7 gathered near Sarapion, at the head of which he became the leader and became the chief, abbot 8. Sarapion owes his rapprochement with the famous representative of Egyptian monasticism, St., to the same exploits in monastic life and to his outstanding theologically educated mind. Anthony, who was in “sincere friendship” with him (γνήσιος φίλος Ἀντωνίου μοναχοῦ) 9, confided his visions to him and, dying, even left him his mantle 10. For this “friendship,” which the hermit Sarapion highly valued, he repaid St. Anthony in that after his death he compiled his life, known so far only in the Slavic translation 11. Here in the desert, in all likelihood, Sarapion met another famous Egyptian ascetic and lover of the hermit life with St. Macarius the Great, with whom he also often talked about monastic life. Sarapion has preserved, although known only in the Coptic language 12, the life of St. Macaria. One must think that acquaintance with such outstanding representatives of Egyptian monasticism and friendly conversations with them about monastic life had an important influence on the structure of the large community he led and was largely reflected in those “monastic rules” (Regula ad monachos) of Bishop Sarapion, which have come down to us in the Latin translation 13 . When in 326 St. Athanasius entered the See of Alexandria, becoming the successor of the famous Bishop Alexander, he soon summoned his “friend and comrade” Sarapion from the desert and ordained him bishop 14 of the city of Tmuis 15. In this rank, the newly ordained bishop was, one might say, the right hand of St. Athanasius and repaid his flattering “friendship” at the dear price of his own imprisonment, when he had to defend St. Afanasia. Emperor Constantius, who took the side of the Arians, believed their slander and slander against St. Athanasius, who had just returned from Gaul to Alexandria, blamed him for the unrest taking place in the city and threatened him with death. The Arians, taking advantage of the emperor's favor towards them, after the robberies and riots in the city, by force elevated their like-minded Gregory to the throne of Alexandria. Under such difficult circumstances, St. Athanasius had to leave Alexandria and retire to Rome in order to depict there all the horrors that his church was experiencing. From here from Rome, it is believed, between 340 and 341, St. Athanasius wrote a letter to Bishop Sarapion of Tmuit, preserved in Latin 16. It was during this difficult time in the life of his “friend and comrade” that the shepherd of Tmuit stood up in his defense, straining all his efforts to justify himself from those erected on St. Afanasy is slandering and trying in every possible way to alleviate his sad fate. Sarapion of Tmuit was not only among those hundred Egyptian bishops who signed the acquittal in defense of St. Athanasius sent a message to all Orthodox bishops, explaining the true state of affairs in the Alexandrian church, but he also acted as an ardent defender before the Council of Sardicia in 347, which was drawn up, at the request of Emperor Constantius, to consider the case of St. Afanasia. When, due to the machinations of the Arians, the true zealots and champions of Orthodoxy failed to achieve what they wanted at this council, i.e. to calm the Alexandrian church, Bishop Sarapion, along with five other bishops, set out in 355 on behalf of the Egyptian Orthodox bishops to intercede for St. Athanasius to Emperor Constantius, who lived in the west at that time. “A man highly respected for his holiness of life and eloquence,” as the historian Sozomen 17 characterizes Bishop Sarapion, boldly appeared before the emperor and, with remarkable freedom and power of eloquence, ardently defended “his friend and comrade” from those elevated to St. Athanasius slanders him as enemies and enemies of the Orthodox Church. This bold, truthful defense did not please the emperor, who was not disposed towards St. Afanasy. The “Angel of the Church of Tmuit” incurred the wrath of the emperor and, on his orders, had to go into exile 18, which, according to Blessed Jerome, “earned him the glory of a confessor” 19. From the place of his exile, it is believed (the late Bishop Philaret of Chernigov 20), however, more based on the content, Bishop Sarapion wrote his now famous letter to Bishop Eudoxius: Θμούεως, ἐπιστολὴ πρὸς Εὐδόξιον ἐπίσκοπον/ 21, in which he speaks of the strength and steadfastness of the Church of Christ amid severe persecutions and trials. But the mission of Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuit, and his other four companion bishops was not fruitless. Warm, convincing and beautiful speeches by Shepherd Tmuitsky in defense of St. Athanasius made a deep impression on the emperor and instilled doubt in his soul about the impartiality of the ill-wishers of St. Afanasia. Therefore, when his brother Constance also raised his voice in defense of the latter, the emperor decided to return St. Athanasius to the Alexandrian see, which, on the occasion of the death of the Arian bishop Gregory in 348, remained vacant, and promised him complete security. St. Athanasius heeded the emperor’s call and, appearing before him to prove his complete innocence, went to his see with great honor from him. It must be assumed that St. Athanasius, upon returning to Alexandria, immediately remembered his “friend and comrade,” Sarapion of Tmuite, who innocently languished in prison because of him, and summoned him from there to his former see. Be that as it may, in the fifties of this century we see him in Egypt in his place. In 358, from the wild desert, where the tireless fighter for the truth, St. Athanasius, the latter writes to Sarapion of Tmuite about the terrible death of the wicked Arius: ἀρχιεπισκόπου τῆς Ἀλεξανδρείας ἐπιστολὴ πρὸς Σεραπίωνα τὸν ἀδελφόν 22. Two years after that, i.e. in 360, already at the request of Sarapion of Tmuite himself, St. Athanasius, in refutation of the Arians, who rejected the deity of St. Spirit and who proved that St. The spirit is created, writes four letters to him “about the divinity of St. Spirit”, now known with the following inscription: /Ἐπιστολὴ πρὸς Σεραπίωνα, Θμούεως ἐπίσκοπον κατὰ τῶν 23 . The year of death of the “angel of the Church of Tmuit” Sarapion is unknown. Some (for example, Valesius) believe that he died earlier than the Council of Seleucia in 359, at which Ptolemy, Bishop of Tmuite, was present 24, but others (for example, Tylemont) indicate the year of death much later 25. The Right Reverend Philaret 26 considers 366 the year of Sarapion’s death, since he “survived,” as can be seen from his above-mentioned letter to the monks, “the great fathers Anthony, Alimon and Macarius,” by which Cardinal A. Mayus 27 means Macarius the Great. This is on the one hand. On the other hand, there is mention here of the biography of St. Anthony, which was written by St. Athanasius in 365. In addition to the already mentioned works of the prolific pen of Bishop Sarapion, namely: letters to the monks, letters to Bishop Eudoxius and the lives of the holy Egyptian ascetics Anthony and Macarius, Blessed Jerome of Stridon ascribes to him “an excellent book against the Manichaeans, a book on the inscriptions of psalms and useful epistles to various persons” 28 . Unfortunately, we must admit that we still know nothing about the second work of Bishop Sarapion and even about the third, if we do not include among the “useful messages to various persons” his letters to Bishop Eudoxius and the monks that we know of. Only “an excellent book against the Manichaeans” has reached us, although, as we will see below, not in a completely satisfactory form. Bishop Sarapion's book against the Manichaeans (Liber adversos manicheos) consists of XXVII chapters and first became known to the scientific world in the extracts of a certain Sixtus of Sinen 29. Its complete Latin translation, made by the famous learned translator of the 16th century Francis Turrian, was published for the first time by Heinrich Canisius in volume V of his Antiquit. lecture." and then was repeatedly published in various kinds of “libraries” of St. fathers. As for the Greek text of the “book against the Manichaeans,” it was first printed according to the faulty Holstein Codex of the Hamburg Library (the II and III chapters of this book were especially unsatisfactorily published) by the famous Basnagius in his Tesaurus Canisianus, and then by Holland in his Veter. patr. bibliothec" and, finally, Minem in "Patrol. curs. complete". t.XL col. 899–924. The outstanding merits of the “book against the Manichaeans” by Bishop Sarapion of Tmuit, in addition to Jerome of Stridon, are spoken of by St. Epiphanius 30 in his work “on heresies” and the famous Patriarch of Constantinople Photius, who ranked its author along with Titus of Bostria and others 31. Bishop Sarapion’s “Book on the Inscription of Psalms,” as we noted above, has not reached us, but his works in general on the study of St. The Scriptures, and especially the books of the Old Testament, are not subject to the slightest doubt. Ave. Philaret of Chernigov indicates the interpretations of Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuit, in a set of interpretations on the eight books (?) according to the manuscripts of the libraries of Tire No. 50, Vienna No. 7 and Venetian St. Brand No. 15 32. We personally know his interpretations also in the code on the Pentateuch of Moses from the manuscripts of the Vatican libraries No. 746, No. 747 and No. 748, Vienna No. 4 and Patmos No. 216. At present, we can point to a new work by the shepherd of the Tmuit Church, Sarapion, about which hitherto there was no information in the literature, but which can be recommended for the special attention of specialists. This work is of a liturgical or church-liturgical nature and is inscribed in two ways in the manuscript: Εὐχὴ προσφόρου Σαραπίωνος ἐπισκόπου/ and in another place /Προσευχαὶ Σαραπίωνος, ἐπισκόπου Θμούεως/. We call it Euchologium because, in their composition, these /Προσευχαὶ/ and “Εὐχὴ προσφόρου”, one might say, completely exhaust the content of the contemporary Greek liturgical book that bears this name. The work of Bishop Sarapion, which we have discovered, is important in a liturgical sense, both in terms of the personality of its author, who lived before the time of the great liturgists of the East, Basil the Great and John Chrysostom, and in terms of its special outstanding merits, and in terms of the completeness of its composition or its volume, in many ways reminiscent of the VIII book of the “Apostolic Constitutions.” The Euchologium of Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuit, was found by us in a glassine manuscript of the 10th-11th centuries, belonging to the library of the Lavra of St. Athanasius on Athos, and is listed here under No. 29 in cabinet B. This manuscript is 16 lobes of sheets, with 186 leaves, written in small continuous handwriting, mostly without marking accents and breaths. On the output page of the manuscript there is a signature: “Arseny”, the hands of the traveler and prominent figure of the 17th century Arseny Sukhanov, who, as is known, traveled to Athos and there, on behalf of Patriarch Nikon, bought manuscripts. On St. Woe, “the builder of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery” Arseniy Sukhanov, “being inside the treasures of divine books, having carefully looked at everything from one to the next, having chosen with the desire, characteristic of his own hand, on the edges of the book, set it apart from others” 33. But this curious manuscript, like many others, for some reason did not reach Moscow for its intended purpose and remained in place in the library of the Lavra of St. Afanasia. l. 1. πίστεως. l. 5. ἐν Κυρίῳ χαίρειν. Printed by Mign. Patrolog. Curs. Complete. t. XXVI col. 1085–1090. l. 7. προσφόρου l. 13. Προσευχαὶ Σαραπίωνος, ἐπισκόπου Θμούεως. l. 21. Article by unknown author: Περὶ Πατρὸς καὶ Υἱοῦ. l. 25. Ποληχρονίου πρόλογος εἰς τὸν Ἰώβ. l. 70. Book of Jesus son of Sirach. l. 130. Ὑπόθεσις εἰς τὰς παροιμίας with prayer: προσευχὴ Ἰησοῦ υἱοῦ Σιράχ Ἐξομολογήσομαι σοι, Κύριε βασιλεῦ. l. 134. Book of Proverbs of Solomon. On l. 162 rev. there is a note: οἱ φίλοι Εζεκίου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας. l. 169. Book of Ecclesiastes. l. 182. Book of Song of Songs. The ending of this book is missing due to the absence of leaves in the manuscript. From this list of the contents of the described manuscript it is clear that it belongs to the department of manuscripts of the Holy Scriptures and those of the books of the Old Testament, in the volume of which we know no less than all the manuscripts. Euchologius or “Εὐχὴ προσφόρου” and “Προσευχαί” of Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuite, is thus a random article in the manuscript and has nothing to do with its main content. It is impossible, however, not to note the curious, in our opinion, fact that the Euchology of Sarapion of Tmuite is also preceded by a random article, undoubtedly belonging to St. Athanasius, namely his letter to Maxim the philosopher, and theological content will be followed by another random article: / Περὶ Πατρὸς καὶ Υἱοῦ / unknown author, but, in origin, undoubtedly of ancient times and even, perhaps, belonging to the same St. Afanasy. The exceptional appearance of Euchologia in the manuscript and the indicated proximity, in our opinion, speak quite convincingly that it was not without a purpose and not without a certain thought that the scribe preceded his manuscript with the aforementioned interpolated articles, which have absolutely nothing to do with its main content. The Euchologion of Bishop Sarapion, as a liturgical monument of Alexandrian origin, naturally had to reflect traces of the influence of the liturgical practice of this church. And indeed, when comparing, for example, /Εὐχὴ προσφόρου Σαραπίωνος ἐπισκόπου/ with the now famous liturgy of St. the apostle and evangelist Mark, practiced in ancient times in the Alexandrian church, and in particular with its canon, we notice in places even a literal similarity between them. For example, let's compare both texts. It is not without interest to point out here the similarity in the thoughts and even in the words of this “prayer of offering” by Bishop Sarapion with the prayer “over the broken bread” in the Eucharist, set out in the famous monument: / Διδαχὴ τῶν δώδεκα ἀποστόλων/. This is the place: The antiquity of this Euchologia, in addition to all this, is evidenced by the simplicity of the composition of the ranks and the simplicity of ritual actions, the place of which is quite proper only in the church of the very first centuries of Christianity. As for the literary merits of the Euchologia we publish, they do not contradict the person whose name it is inscribed in the manuscript. A deep, subtle theological mind, remarkable knowledge of the word of God and genuine eloquence - all this was reflected in the prayers of this Euchologius, and all these qualities were not alien to Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuit, as far as we can judge about him, based on the testimonies of historians and writers of antiquity. PRAYER OF OFFERING SARAPION BISHOP It is worthy and righteous that You, the unborn Father of the only begotten Jesus Christ, should be praised, sung, glorified. We praise You, unborn God, unsearchable, ineffable, incomprehensible by every born hypostasis; We praise You as the only begotten Son, through Him proclaimed, revealed and known by the begotten creation; We praise You, Who knows the Son and reveals to the saints the knowledge of Him, who is known by His begotten Word and is visible and revealed to the saints. We praise You, Invisible Father, Giver of immortality, You are the source of life, the source of light, the source of all grace and all truth, more loving of mankind and more loving of the poor, reconciling everyone and drawing everyone to yourself through the coming of your beloved Son, we pray: grant us the Spirit of light, so that we know the true You and Him who You sent Jesus Christ, give us the Holy Spirit, so that we can express and to explain your ineffable mysteries, may the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit speak to us and sing to you through us, for you are above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the future. Before you are thousands of thousands and myriads of myriads of angels, archangels, thrones, dominions, principalities, powers; Before you are two most honest six-winged seraphim, with two wings covering their faces, with two legs, with two flying and sanctifying; with him accept also our sanctification of those who say: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are filled with your glory; The sky is full, the earth is full of the majesty of your glory. Lord of hosts, fulfill this sacrifice with your strength and your communion, for we have offered you this living sacrifice, a bloodless offering; This bread was brought to you in the likeness of the body of the Only Begotten; This bread is a likeness of the Holy Body, because the Lord Jesus Christ on the night on which he was betrayed took bread, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat this, this is my body, which was broken for you for the remission of sins. Therefore, we, committing a semblance of death, brought bread and ask through this sacrifice to forgive us all and have mercy, God of righteousness. And just as this bread was sown in the mountains and gathered into one (whole), so gather your holy church from every nation, from every country, from every city, village and dwelling, and make it one living Catholic Church. We also brought a cup in the likeness of blood, because the Lord Jesus Christ, having taken the cup at supper, said to his disciples: Take, drink, this (cup) is the new covenant, this is my blood, which is shed for you for the remission of sins. Therefore, we brought a cup in the likeness of blood, asking: May the God of righteousness, Your holy word, come on this bread, so that the bread may become the Body of the Word and on this cup, so that the cup may become true blood and make it so that all who partake will receive life-giving medicine for the healing of every disease, for the increase of all prosperity and virtue, but not for condemnation, O God of righteousness, nor for reproof and shame, because we They called upon You, the unborn, through the Only Begotten in the Holy Spirit, that this people may receive mercy, that they may be rewarded with success, and that angels may be sent as companions to the people to resist the evil one and to strengthen the church. We ask for all the departed, whom we remember with a list of names, sanctify these souls, because You know everything, sanctify the souls who have died in the Lord and number among all Your holy powers, and grant them a place and abode in Your kingdom; accept and thank the people and bless those who brought offerings and thanksgiving, and grant health, wholeness, joy and all prosperity of soul and body to all this people through your only begotten Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, to whom it was and is and will be throughout all generations and forever and ever. Amen. AFTER PRAYER, BREAKING AND WHEN BREAKING, PRAYER Grant us this communion, O God of truth, and make our bodies an abode of purity, and our souls - prudence and knowledge; and make us wise, O God of generosity, through the communion of the Body and Blood, because through the Only Begotten be glory and power to You in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. AFTER THE DISTRIBUTION OF Fragmentation To The Clergy, The Laying On Of Hands To The People I lay my hand on this people and ask that You extend the hand of righteousness and give a blessing to this people, according to your love for mankind, God of generosity, and for the real sacraments. May the hand of piety and strength, and chastity, and purity, and all holiness bless this people and guide them to prosperity and prosperity through Your Only Begotten Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. AFTER THE PEOPLE'S PERMISSION PRAYER We thank You, Master, because You called the lost and sinners into ownership, and, out of Your love for mankind, turned away reproach from us, forgiving and cleansing us through repentance and, through the knowledge of You, rejecting You. We thank You because You have given us the communion of Flesh and Blood. Bless us, bless this people, make us to be part of the Body and Blood through your only begotten Son, through whom Your glory and power are in the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to all ages of ages. Amen. PRAYER FOR THOSE OFFERING OIL AND WATER We bless these substances in the name of the only begotten Jesus Christ, we call upon the name of him who suffered, was crucified and resurrected and who sits at the right hand of the Unborn on water and this oil: grant healing power to these substances, so that every shaking, every demonic infection and every illness through drinking and anointing will be reflected and that the communion with these substances will be a healing medicine, a means to health in the name of your only begotten Jesus Christ, through whom you glory and power in the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. LAYING ON OF HANDS AFTER THE BLESSING OF WATER AND OIL O loving God of truth, may this people be honored with the communion of the Body and Blood; May their bodies be living bodies, may their souls be pure souls, grant this blessing for the observance of communion and for the establishment of the former thanksgiving, please everyone in general and make them chosen through your only begotten Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. King and Lord of all and Creator of everything that is in all created nature, through the descent of your only begotten Jesus Christ, granting salvation, delivering the creation that You created, through the descent of Your ineffable Word: see now from heaven and look upon these waters and fill them with the Holy Spirit, let your ineffable word be in them and change their properties, make them productive, filled with Your grace, so that the sacrament now performed would not be ineffective in those who are reborn, but would fill all those who descend and immerse themselves with divine grace. O loving benefactor, spare Thy creation, save the creation created by Thy right hand, grant to all those who are reborn a divine and ineffable image, so that through a change of image and rebirth they can be saved and worthy of Thy kingdom: and just as Thy only-begotten Word, descending on the waters of the Jordan, made them holy, so now may He descend upon these waters and yes He will make them holy and spiritual, so that those who are baptized will not be flesh and blood, but spiritual, able to worship You, the unborn Father, through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, through whom be glory and dominion to You, now and forever and ever. Amen. We ask You, God of truth, for your servant named and we pray that you will make him worthy of the divine sacrament and your ineffable rebirth, because now he is offered to You, O Lover of Mankind, and we dedicate him to You. Grant him to be a partaker of this divine rebirth, to no longer be willing to do anything wrong and evil, but to serve You always and keep Your commandments, under the guidance of Your only begotten Word, because for His sake be glory and power to You in the Holy Spirit, now and throughout the ages of ages. Amen. Lord Almighty, seal the appeal of this servant of yours, now perfect to You, and his manner of behavior unchangeable, so that he will no longer work in vain, but would serve You, the God of truth, and You, the Creator of all, would be a servant, so that He may appear to You as perfect and sincere through Your only begotten Jesus Christ, through Whom be glory and dominion to You in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. AFTER ADOPTION PRAYER Lover of mankind, benefactor, Savior of all who have turned to You, be merciful to this name of your servant, guide him to rebirth with your right hand; May Your only begotten Word guide him to the font, may He honor his rebirth, may He not deprive You of Your grace, may Your holy Word accompany him, may Your holy Spirit be with him, driving away and removing all temptation, because through Your only begotten Jesus Christ is glory and power, now and forever and ever. Amen. AFTER IMMERSION AND EXIT (FROM THE WATER) PRAYER True God, creator of all, Lord of every creature, bless this servant of yours with your blessing, show him pure in regeneration, make him a partaker of your angelic powers, so that he is no longer called flesh, but spiritual, having been made worthy of your divine and useful gift, and so that he may be preserved to the end by you, the Creator of all things, through your only begotten Jesus Christ, through whom be glory and dominion to you in the holy Spirit, now and forever. centuries. Amen. ORDERING OF DEACONS Father of the Only Begotten, who sent his Son and created on earth all the objects and canons in the church, and bestowed ranks for the benefit and salvation of the flock, elected bishops, presbyters and deacons to serve his catholic church, elected through your only begotten seven deacons and gave them the Holy Spirit, make this also a deacon of your catholic church and give him the Spirit reason and judgment, so that he may serve among the holy people purely and blamelessly in this ministry for the sake of Your only begotten Jesus Christ, through whom be glory and dominion to You in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. ORDERING OF ELSERS We stretch out our hand, Lord God of heaven, Thy Only Begotten Father, over this man and pray that the Spirit of truth may descend upon him: grant him reason and knowledge and a good heart, that the divine Spirit may rest in him, so that he may govern Thy people, keep Thy divine words, and reconcile Thy people to Thee, the unborn God, Who, having dispensed from the spirit of Moses upon His chosen ones, bestowed the Holy Spirit and Namely, the Holy Spirit from the Only Begotten Spirit for the gift of wisdom, reason and right faith, so that he can serve you with a clear conscience for the sake of your only begotten Jesus Christ, through whom be glory and power to you in the holy Spirit now and forever and ever. Amen. ORDERING OF A BISHOP Sending the Lord Jesus for the good of the whole universe and through Him choosing apostles, ordaining holy bishops from generation to generation. God of righteousness, make him a living bishop, a holy bishop of the succession of the holy apostles, and grant him grace and the Divine Spirit, Whom you gave to all your faithful servants and prophets and patriarchs, make him worthy to shepherd Your flock, and may he remain uncondemned and without stumbling in the episcopacy for the sake of your only begotten Jesus Christ, through whom be glory and power to you in the holy Spirit now and forever and ever. Amen. PRAYERS OF SARAPION, BISHOP OF TMUIT PRAYER FOR THE ANOINTING OF THE BAPTIZED O Lord, more loving and soul-loving, generous and merciful, we call upon you to follow and obey the commandments of your Only Begotten, who said: if you forgive the sins of someone, they will be forgiven them too; and with this anointing we anoint those who with desire begin this divine rebirth, begging that our Lord Jesus Christ may give them healing and strengthening power, and that through this anointing they may discover and heal every sign of sin and lawlessness, or satanic cause in their soul, flesh and spirit, and with the same grace give them forgiveness so that, having removed themselves from sin, they may live in righteousness, and through this anointing recreated and purified in the font and renewed by the Spirit, and thus would be able to overcome the opposing actions and deceits of this life that attack them and, thus, be united and united to the flock of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and inherit the promises with the saints, because through Him there is glory and power in the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. PRAYER OVER THE PEACE WITH WHICH THE BAPTIZED ARE ANOINTED God of hosts, helper of every soul that turns to You and is under the sovereign hand of Your Only Begotten, we call on You, so that by the divine and invisible power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, divine and heavenly power may take root in this world, so that those baptized and anointed by Him, having received the outline of the saving banner of the cross of Your Only Begotten, by the cross of which we were overthrown and solemnly defeated Satan and every opposing force, so that those reborn and renewed by the font of rebirth would themselves become partakers of the gift of the Holy Spirit, and, protected by this seal, would remain unshakable, unchangeable, inviolable, unoppressed, safe from snares, being in faith and knowledge of the truth to the end, awaiting the heavenly hopes of life and the eternal promises of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, through whom you glory and power in the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen. PRAYER OVER THE OIL OF THE SICK, OR OVER BREAD, OR OVER WATER We call on You, who has all power and strength, the Savior of all people, the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and we pray to send down the healing power of the Only Begotten from heaven onto this oil, so that those who anoint or partake of these Thy substances would be able to drive away every disease and every weakness, an antidote to everything demonic, a means of removing every unclean spirit, to liberation from every fire and shake. and any illness, so that it would be a good gift, for the forgiveness of sins, a life-giving and saving medicine, for health and preservation of the soul, body, spirit in full strength; Let all the power of Satan, all the demonic, all the malice of the enemy, every defeat, every scourge, every suffering, every illness or blow, or shock, or evil eclipse be afraid of them, Master. In Your holy name, which we have now called, and in the name of the Only Begotten, let them depart from these servants of yours, without and within, so that the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and risen and who accepted our sicknesses and infirmities, will be glorified for us, coming to judge the living and the dead, because through Him be glory and power to You in the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. PRAYER FOR THE DEAD BEFORE CARRYING OUT God, who has power over life and death, God of spirits and Lord of all flesh, God, who sends death and gives life, who descends to the gates of hell and ascends, who creates the spirit of man in him and receives the souls of saints, and who rests, transforms, changes and modifies his creations, as justly and usefully, being Himself the only immortal, unchangeable and eternal: we pray to You for the dormition and at the rest of your servant named or your servant named, rest his soul and spirit in green places, in the treasuries of rest together with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all your saints, but resurrect his body on the day on which, according to your false promise, you promised that, having given him his due portion in his holy pastures, he would not remember his transgressions and sins. Make its present outcome peaceful and blessed, heal the sorrows of those who mourn with the spirit of consolation, and grant us all a good end through Your Only Begotten Jesus Christ, through Whom be glory and power to You in the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. You removed iniquity through the Only Begotten, having defeated Satan and bound his intricacies and freed those bound by him, we thank You for the catechumens, because You called them through the Only Begotten and gave Your knowledge to them, therefore we pray that they may be established in knowledge, so that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ sent Him, may they remain in learning and in pure mind and yes will succeed in becoming worthy of the font of rebirth and the holy Sacraments in the Holy Spirit, through whom be glory and power to You now and forever and ever.
