Substance is a self-existent thing that does not need anything else for its existence; and again: substance is that which is hypostatic in itself (αυθυποστατον) and does not have its existence in another, i.e. that which does not exist through another and does not have its being in another and does not need another for its existence; but it exists in itself, in which the accident receives its being. Color exists for the sake of the body, to color it, and not the body for the sake of color. Likewise, color has its existence in the body, and not the body in the color, which is why they say “body color” and not “color body.” Therefore, with frequent changes and changes in color, the substance, i.e. the body does not change, but remains the same. (In Greek) substance is called ουσια - from ειναι, to exist [predominantly; accident - συμβεβηκος from συμβαινειν - to happen and sometimes to be, and sometimes not to be, because a certain object may have the same accident, or may not have it, but have the opposite].
