Matthew 10:1. And having called His twelve disciples, He gave them power over unclean spirits to cast them out and heal every disease and every infirmity.
The Lord and Teacher is beneficent and merciful: He does not look with envy at His power (virtutes suas) in His servants and disciples. And just as He Himself healed every disease and infirmity, so He gave His apostles the power to heal every disease and every infirmity among the people. But there is a great difference between “having” and “distributing”, “receiving” and “giving”. He [the Teacher] does everything he does by the power of God, and they [the disciples], if they do anything, confess their weakness and the power of the Lord, saying: “in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk” (Acts 3:6). It should be noted that the power to perform miracles, entrusted to the apostles, is the twelfth miracle [of the Savior].
Matthew 10:2. These are the names of the Twelve Apostles.
The list of apostles is given so that those who subsequently acted 185 as false apostles were excluded from their number.
Matthew 10:3. [continuation of 2nd and 3rd]: The first Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James Zebedee 186 and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James Alphaeus 187 and Lebway, called Thaddeus.
The order of the apostles and the merit of each were appropriated to be distributed only by Him who tests the secrets of the heart. Simon was recorded first, with the name Peter, to distinguish him from another Simon, called Canaanite (Cananaeus), from the settlement of Cana (Ghana) of Galilee, in which the Lord turned water into wine (John 2:11). He also calls Jacob the son of Zebedee, because next comes Jacob, the son of Alphaeus. He also unites the dual combinations of the apostles: he unites the brothers Peter and Andrew not so much in the flesh as in the spirit; [connects] James and John, who, leaving bodily bread 188, followed the true Father; [connects] Philip and Bartholomew, as well as Thomas and Matthew the publican. Other evangelists, combining the names of the apostles, put Matthew first, and then Thomas; at the same time, they do not add the word 189 publican, so that it does not seem that they are dishonoring the evangelist by recalling his former way of life. And he himself places himself after Thomas, and, as we said above, calls himself a publican, so that where “unrighteousness abounded, grace also abounded” (Rom. 5:20). 190
(Chananaeus). This is the one who is written down by another evangelist [or: in another Gospel] with the nickname “Zealot” (Luke 6:15). In the lane: with a name - ed. for "Kana" (Ghana) means "jealousy, zeal." Church history reports that the Apostle Thaddeus was sent to Edessa to Abgar, king of Ozroene; The Evangelist Luke calls him Judas [son of] James (Luke 6:16), and in another place he is called “Levbe” (Matthew 10:3), which means: “a prudent man.” It is necessary to think that he had a threefold name, just as Simon is called Peter, and the sons of Zebedee are called “Boanerges” [or: “Vanerges” sons of thunder] for the firmness and strength of their faith (Mark 3:16-17).
And Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.
He received the prefix to his name, perhaps, from the city or from the village from which he came, or perhaps from the tribe of Isachar, so he was born with some prediction of his condemnation, for “Isachar” means “payment,” which indicates a reward to the traitor.
Matthew 10:5. [end] and 6: Do not go towards the Gentiles and do not enter the city of the Samaritans, but go primarily to the lost sheep of the house of Israel 191
This passage does not contradict the command that is given later: “Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), because the first command was given before the resurrection, and the second after the resurrection. Indeed, first the coming of Christ had to be announced to the Jews, so that they would have no reason to justify themselves (ne justam haberent excusationem), saying that they rejected the Lord because He sent the apostles to the pagans and Samaritans. In a figurative sense, we who bear the name Christians are commanded not to wander along the path of heretics and pagans, so that, separating [from them] in faith, we must differ [from them] in our lives.
Matthew 10:7–8. And as you go, preach, saying that the kingdom of heaven is at hand; Heal the weak, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons 192
And so that simple people, not possessing the charms of eloquence, unlearned, unlearned, will meet faith among everyone when they promise the Kingdom of Heaven, He gives them the power to heal the sick, cleanse lepers and cast out demons, so that the greatness of the promise will be confirmed by the greatness of signs [or: wonders]. And since spiritual gifts, if the reward for labor is average, are always cheaper, He adds a condemnation of stinginess in the words:
Freely you have received, freely give.
I, the Lord and Teacher, have given this to you without payment, and you also give it away without payment, so that the grace of the Gospel may not be damaged.
Matthew 10:9–10. Do not have with you any gold, no silver, no copper money in your belts, no bag for the journey, no two coats, no boots, no staff. For a worker is worthy of his own food 193
He consistently gives these commands to the evangelists of the truth, to whom he said above: “Freely you have received, freely give,” for if they preach in such a way that they do not take payment for it, then the possession of gold, silver and money would be unnecessary, since, having gold and silver, they would seem to be preachers not for the sake of saving people, but for the sake of profit 194 . “No copper in the bags.” He who rejected [or: rejects] wealth, at the same time almost rejects concern for the necessities of life, so the apostles, as teachers of the true faith, who taught everyone the truth that everything is governed by the providence of God, in themselves had to set an example of complete carelessness about the future. “Not a bag on the way.” With this command He denounces those philosophers who were usually called Bactroperites [i.e. e. those who carried a staff - “baculum” and a bag - “rega"], because they, despising the world and considering everything as nothing, carried a cellar with them for storing food. “Not two clothes.” Under the two clothes, I think, a double robe [two headdresses] is shown.
This does not mean that in the countries of Scythia and cold countries, covered with snow and ice, one must be content with only one lower garment (tunica); but in the fact that by this lower garment is meant a whole robe, therefore, in the fact that we should not, out of fear for the future, keep another robe in reserve, having one on ourselves. “Neither boots.” And Plato instructed that we should not cover the two extremities of the body and should not accustom the head and legs to effeminacy, for when they have strength in themselves, the other parts are stronger. “Neither a staff.” Having the help of the Lord, why would we seek protection in a piece of wood? But since He sent the apostles to preach half-footed and half-naked, 195 and since the position (conditio) of the teachers seemed difficult, then He tempered the severity of the previous commandment with the following thought, saying: “A worker is worthy of his food.” Take, he says, only in such quantity as you need for life and clothing 196 Therefore, the apostle says accordingly to the same thing: “Having food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 Tim. 6:8).
Or in another place: “He who is made public by the word” (catechizatur verbo), “let him have fellowship with him who announces him in every good thing” (Gal. 6:6), 197 so that the disciples should make partners in the bodily goods of those people from whom they gather the spiritual harvest. This is in the historical (literal) meaning. On the other hand, and in the figurative meaning, teachers should not have either gold, silver, or copper, which are in belts Gold is often used in books to mean intelligence, silver to mean speech, and copper to mean voice.
We should not seek all this from others, but use the benefits given to us from the Lord; also one should not accept instruction in the perverse teachings of heretics and philosophers and 198 burden oneself with the weight of this world, and have double-mindedness, and bind one’s feet with deadly bonds, but be as if naked (nudos) when entering the Holy Land; also do not take a rod, which turns into a serpent, and do not lean on any fleshly defense (Exodus 4:2–4; 2 Kings 18:20–21), because a rod and staff of this kind is like a reed (Isaiah 36:6): if you bend it a little, it breaks and pierces the hand of the one leaning on it.
Matthew 10:11. Whatever city or village you enter, visit who is worthy in it, and stay there until you leave.
Regarding the ordination of a bishop and a deacon, Paul says: “He must also have a good testimony from outsiders” (1 Tim. 3:7). The apostles, entering a new city, could not know what kind of people were in it 199. Therefore, it was necessary to choose the owner of the house on the basis of favorable reviews of the people and the judgment of the neighbors, so that the dignity of preaching would not be dishonored by the bad reputation of the host. Although it was necessary to preach to everyone, the hospitable host was chosen to be one who would not benefit the one who wanted to stay with him, but would receive from him, for this is what the words mean: “Whoever is worthy in him,” so that he would know that he receives grace more than he himself shows mercy.
Matthew 10:12–13. And when you enter a house, greet it, saying: Peace to this house; and if the house is worthy, then your peace will come upon it; if you are not worthy, then your peace will return to you.
Secretly, but expressively, He pointed (occulte expressit) to the greeting of the Hebrew and Syriac languages; indeed, what is expressed in Greek by the word χαίρε (Hail), and in Latin by the word ave (hello), in Hebrew and Syriac is expressed by the words salom lach ( שלום לד ) salom emmach ( שלום ממד ), i.e. “peace be with you.” And His command is this meaning: When you enter the house, you wish peace to the householder from your heart and, as far as it depends on you, tame the quarrels that arise as a result of disagreement. And if there is no enmity, then you will have a reward for the peace you bring;
Matthew 10:14. And if anyone does not receive you and does not listen to your words, when leaving home or out of town, shake off the dust from your feet 201
The dust is shaken off the feet as evidence of the labor incurred, because they entered the city, and the preaching of the apostles reached its inhabitants. Or maybe she shakes herself off [to show] that from those who despise the Gospel they will not take anything even insignificant, necessary for life.
Matthew 10:15. Truly I say to you, it will be easier for the land to endure Sodom and Gomorray on the day of judgment than for that city 202
If it will be easier for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah to endure [the day of judgment] than for a city that did not accept the Gospel - and it is easier because Sodom and Gomorrah were not preached, but this city was preached to, and it did not accept the Gospel - then it follows that the punishments for sinners will be different.
Matthew 10:16. Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.
He calls the scribes and Pharisees, who were clergy of the Jews, wolves.
Matthew 10:17–18. Therefore be wise as serpents and simple as doves. Beware of people, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake as a testimony to them and to the nations 203
Thus (ut) with the help of prudence they should avoid intrigues, and with their simplicity they should not do evil. They take as an example the foresight of a snake, because it covers its head with its whole body and protects that in which life is concentrated. So we too, despite the complete danger to the body, must protect our Head, which is Christ. The simplicity of doves is shown by the appearance of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. That is why the apostle says: “Be infants to evil” (1 Cor. 14:20).
Matthew 10:19–20. When they betray you, do not worry about how or what to say; for in that hour it will be given to you what to say, for it is not you who will speak, but the Spirit of your Father who will speak in you.
Above He said: “They will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake.”
So, when we are led before the judges for Christ’s sake, we must sacrifice only our will for Christ. And then (caeterum) Christ living in us will speak for Himself, and the grace of the Holy Spirit will work in that we will need to respond.
Matthew 10:21. Brother will betray brother to death, and father his son; and children will rise up against their parents and kill them
Matthew 10:22. and you will be hated by everyone because of My name
We see this repeatedly during persecution, so that those whose faiths are different have no trust among themselves.
Matthew 10:22. [end]: He who endures to the end will be saved.
Indeed, virtue does not consist in making a beginning, but in reaching a perfect end.
Matthew 10:23–25. When they persecute you in one city, flee to another. For truly I say to you, before you have gone around the cities of Israel, the Son of Man comes. A student is not above his teacher, and a servant is not above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and for the servant to be like his master.
These words must be attributed to the time when the apostles were sent to preach, (and) which actually says: “Do not go along the way to the Gentiles, and do not enter the city of the Samaritans” (Matthew 10:5-6), 205
in the sense that they should not be afraid of persecution, but should avoid it - which, as we see, is what the believers did: when the persecution began in Jerusalem, they were scattered throughout Judea, so that the beginning of the persecution gave rise to the planting of the Gospel. And in a spiritual sense, we can interpret it this way: when we are persecuted in one city, that is, in one book of Holy Scripture or testimony from it, then we must resort to other scrolls. And although the enemy will be more stubborn than usual, the Savior’s help will come sooner than we succumb to the superiority of our enemies. 206
Matthew 10:25. [end 25, beginning 26]: If the master of the house was called Beelzebub, how much more of his household? So do not be afraid of them.”
Beelzebub is the idol of Akkar, called in the books of Kings “the idol of the fly” (2 Kings 1:16) 207 “Beel”, also known as “Bel [Bel]” or: “Baal”; "a" zebub" means: "fly". Thus, they called the prince of demons by the name of the most vile idol, which was called a fly because of its uncleanness, which destroys the pleasant smell of oil (Eccl. 10:1). 208
Matthew 10:26. [end]: For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing hidden that will not be known.
But how is it that the vices of many in real life remain unknown? This is written about a future time [or age], when the Lord will judge the secrets of people and illuminate the dark depths, and make clear the counsels of the heart. This is the meaning here. Do not be afraid of the ferocity of the persecutors and the rage of the blasphemers, for the day of judgment will come, on which both your virtue and their unrighteousness will be revealed.
Matthew 10:27. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and whatever you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.
What you hear in secret you preach openly, and what you learn in private (abscondite) speak publicly. Boldly teach in all cities and throughout the world what I taught you in the insignificant land of Judea.
Matthew 10:28. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul.
Those who kill the body cannot kill the soul: thus the soul is invisible and incorporeal in comparison with the greater grossness of our bodily being. Or maybe [He wants to say] that she will be punished and will feel torment at the time when she is again united with her former body, so that she will be punished with the one with whom she sinned.
And fear more than that, who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
The word “gehenna” is not found in the most ancient books and is used for the first time by the Savior. Thus, let us examine what was the reason for using this expression. We read more than once that the idol of Baal stood near Jerusalem at the foot of Mount Moriah, where the stream Siloe flowed (1 Kings 11:7). It was a valley and plain of a small field, wet and covered with forest, having many charming places; there was also a grove dedicated to the idol. The people of Israel reached such madness that, leaving the church that was next door, they made sacrifices there; the severity of the true faith was defeated by pleasures, and they sacrificed their sons there to the demons, burning or dedicating them. And that place was called "gehennom", i.e. "valley of the sons" [or: "sons"] "Nennom". This is written in great detail in the scrolls of Kings (2 Kings 23:10), Chronicles (2 Chronicles 28:3-4) and Jeremiah (Jer.7:31-32; Jer.19:5-6; Jer.32:35) And God threatens to fill this very place with the corpses of the dead, so that it will no longer be called Tophet and Baal, but will be called Polyandrium, i.e. “hill of the dead.”
Thus, the name of this place is called the future punishments and eternal torment with which sinners will be tormented; and that Gehenna is of two kinds, namely a place of terrible heat and cold, we read about this in great detail in the book of Job (Job.24).
Matthew 10:29–33. Are not two sparrows sold for [one] “ase” [small copper coin]; but not one of them falls to the earth without your Father. And all the hairs on your head are numbered. Don't be afraid, you are better than many sparrows. Therefore, whoever confesses Me before men, I will also confess before the face of My Father who is in heaven, and whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before the face of My Father who is in heaven 209
The Lord's speech remains true to itself, and what follows follows from what was said above. Prudent reader, always beware of preconceived interpretation, so as not to measure the Scriptures with your own meaning, but, on the contrary, to adapt your meaning to the Scriptures and understand what follows. Above He said: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul.” Now He says: “Are not two sparrows sold for an ace, but not one of them falls to the ground without your Father.” The meaning of the words is this: if small and insignificantly valuable animals do not perish without the permission of God, and if providence operates in everything, so that even that which has to perish does not perish without the will of God; then you, destined for eternity (qui aeterni estis), should not be afraid that you will live without the Providence of God. This meaning was expressed earlier in the words: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your Father in heaven feeds them.
Aren't you much better than them? (Matthew 6:26) and further: “Look at the lilies of the field, how they grow” (Matthew 6:28) and so on; “But if the grass of the field, which exists today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, God so clothes it, how much more than you, you of little faith!” (Matthew 6:30). Some understand by two sparrows, using an artificial interpretation, soul and body. Also, the five sparrows - in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 12:6) - which are sold for two asses, they refer to the five external senses. But a considerable difficulty is how to adapt such an understanding to the entire composition (corpori) of the Gospel word: “And all the hairs of your head are numbered, so do not be afraid; You are better than many sparrows."
Here the previously stated meaning of our interpretation is expressed much more clearly. They should not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul, because if even small animals do not fall without the knowledge of God, much less a person who is supported by apostolic dignity. And with the words: “Even all the hairs on your head are numbered.”
It shows the immeasurable providence of God for people and denotes ineffable love, for nothing in us is hidden from God, and even insignificant and idle words do not escape His knowledge. The ecclesiastical understanding of this passage is ridiculed by those who deny the resurrection of the flesh, as if we affirm that even all the hairs that are numbered but cut off by the barber will be restored. But the Savior did not say: “All the hairs of your head are saved,” but: “they are numbered”; and where - a number, only knowledge of the value of the number is shown, and not the preservation of this number.
Matthew 10:34. Do not think that I came to bring peace to earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Above He said: “What I say to you in the dark, speak in the light; and whatever you hear in your ear, preach on the housetops.” And now He shows what will happen after preaching. By faith in Christ, the whole world was divided [and rebelled] against itself: each house had both believers and infidels, and as a result of this, a good war was sent [to earth] so that the bad world would end. This is the same thing that God did, as it is written in the book of Genesis, against the indignant people who moved from the east and hastened to build a tower, thanks to which 210 could penetrate into the heights of heaven, [did] to confuse their languages (Gen. 11). Therefore, in the psalm, David sends up the following prayer: “Scatter the nations that desire battle” (Ps. 67:31).
Matthew 10:35–36. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man’s enemies are his own household.
This passage is found almost verbatim in the book of the prophet Micah (Micah 7:6). 211 And at the same time it is necessary to note, whenever evidence is given from the Old Testament, whether it agrees only in meaning, or in wording.
Matthew 10:37. Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and whoever loves a son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
He who previously said: “I did not come to send down peace on earth, but a sword, and to restore people” against father and mother and mother-in-law, so that no one would put [their] piety (pietatem) above faith (religionis), added below: “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me.” And in the book of Song of Songs we read: “Make love towards Me a rule” (ordinate) (Song. 2:4). 212 This rule, or order, is necessary in every movement of the soul. After God, love the father, love the mother, love the children (filios). And if the need arises for love for parents and children to be compared with love for God, and if a person cannot preserve both loves together, then let there be love (pietas) in relation to God, and hatred (odium) in relation to one’s own. or mother more than Me."
Matthew 10:38–39. And whoever does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who saves his soul will lose it; but he who loses his life for My sake will save it.
Another Gospel says: “Whoever does not take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23). 213 The cross must always be carried on oneself, without thinking that only ardent faith can be enough; we must always demonstrate [our] love for Christ.
Matthew 10:40. Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me.
Amazing order! He sends people to preach, to teach that there is no need to be afraid of dangers, and he subordinates the movements of the soul to faith (religion!). He rejected gold and banished copper from belts. But then where do you get food from? Where can I get the necessary means of subsistence? And so He softens the severity of the commandments with the hope of promises, saying: “Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me,” so that each believer knows that in the person of the accepted apostles he has received Christ.
Matthew 10:41. Whoever receives a prophet, in the name of the prophet, will receive the prophet's reward; and whoever receives the righteous, in the name of the righteous, will receive the reward of the righteous.
Whoever accepts a prophet as a prophet and understands 215 what he says about the future will accept the prophet's reward. Therefore, the Jews, who understand the prophets in a carnal way, will not receive the reward of the prophets. Otherwise: in every confession, bad grass is mixed with wheat. He said before: “Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” He encouraged students to accept their teachers. On the part of believers, a hidden answer could be expressed: does this mean we must accept both false prophets and Judas the traitor, and give them food? The Lord warned this answer, saying that it is not the individual who must be accepted, but the dignity denoted by the name (nomina), and that those who accept will not be deprived of the reward, even if the one accepted is unworthy.
Matthew 10:42. And whoever gives one of these little ones to drink only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, truly I tell you, will not lose his reward.
In the prophet David we read: “To seek excuses for sins” (Ps. 140:4), 217 because many sinners pretend to be justas occasiones, so that it would seem that they sinned out of necessity in what [in reality] they allowed to transgress freely; but the Lord, who searches hearts and bellies, contemplates in each individual his future thoughts. He said: “Whoever receives you receives Me.” But the fulfillment of this commandment can be hindered by many false prophets and false preachers; therefore He also indicated a remedy against this temptation, saying: “Whoever receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of a righteous person.” But someone (alius) can give himself the following justification: “I encounter obstacles in my poverty, my lack keeps me from being hospitable.” However, the Lord also eliminated such an excuse with a very easy to fulfill commandment, so that we serve a cup of cold water with all our hearts.
“Cold,” He says, “and not “hot,” so that the delivery of hot water does not indicate poverty and lack of firewood [for warming]. This is the same thing that the apostle, as we said before, commanded the Galatians: “He who is published by preaching, let him have fellowship with the one who publishes him in all good things” (Gal. 6:6); 218 and he convinces students to take care of their teachers. And since someone can point to poverty and evade fulfilling the commandment, then, before offering the commandment, he resolves the question that may arise with the words: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Gal. 6:7), and this is in this sense: “It is in vain that you make lack the cause; because your conscience says otherwise. You can [me potes, or: ne putes don’t think] deceive Me when I convince [you], but know that you will only reap what you sow.”
