Messenger from Metropolitan Jonah to Vladyka Simeon of Pollotsk, about his humility and pride
Blessing of Jonah, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus', about the Holy Spirit to the son and fellow servant of our humility, Simeon, Bishop of Pollotsk. Your sheet, my son, came before us, and having learned about everything on it, we marveled that it was not because of the argument of your brotherhood to our humility and not according to the origin of the former, your brother, Polotsky bishops, as they first wrote to my brethren, the former metropolitan, and to this day; and from you this has now been done in a new way and seemed to us in bewilderment: we are not aware that you have reached deep old age and unconsciousness, or have forgotten the divine and sacred rules, and, resisting them, rose up in arrogance and pride. And we know, son, that you know the ancient times, and you are skilled in the divine scripture, and you know that our Creator Christ the Master for pride and the angel did not spare his own, but also cast him down from heaven; But it is worthy for us to maintain humility, to fulfill in everything the divine commandments handed down by the Holy Fathers and observing each archbishop and bishop’s church degree, one by one, according to their chip, as it was handed down from ancient times.
But look, son, judge for yourself: is it suitable for us to be called “brother” by the holy patriarch, having his ordination on us? no matter what: but he, out of our great spiritual love for him, is free, and should not, to us, to his sons [and] pilgrims, to write as his will; also we should write to you, and not we to him, nor you, our children, to us, against the sole vanity and pride, and even more so without the mind. And God's mercy is on you. Written on December 7.
