Message from the Archbishop of Novgorod Semion 1932 to the abbot of Mount Nesnitskaya
Blessing of the Archbishop of Novgorod, Bishop Semeon 1933, to the abbot of the monastery of the Holy Mother of God of Snetnaya Gora and the entire Lavra of the Holy Mother of God, to all the monks. I heard about your monastery, that in your monastery there are monks, but they do not live like chernets, they do not keep a confessor, and they are not in obedience to the abbot and the elders: but you should support the monastery fortress, the abbot and the elders of the monastery of the Holy Mother of God. And these monks have come out of your monastery, and the worldly people and worldly judges are raising up against the abbot and the elders of our monastery; And let these worldly judges and laymen judge you by worldly custom, as it is wrong to be a layman, or jointly judge you, or a company to the abbot and the elder: otherwise the rules of the Holy Fathers and the law of God scold, and I do not bless the bishop for this, and I do not order secular people, my children, or judges to intervene in such matters, in monastic ones.
And regarding those matters, I commanded the abbot of the Holy Mother of God and the elders to all hold their monastery fortress, and for the monks to be obedient to the abbot and the elders, and to keep their spiritual father; and whoever does not decide to live like this, and starts to raise battles among the brethren, or is not in obedience to the abbot and the elders, and we ordered them to be rebuilt from that holy monastery, and not to give him what was brought in. And which monk reposes of that monastery, and whatever is left of that monk, and all that is of the Holy Mother of God and that holy monastery and the brethren 1934, and let the worldly people not partake of it. If some monk, having left the monastery, decides to raise worldly people or judges against the abbot and the elders, let such a one be under the burden of the holy church and under our humility; or whoever a worldly person begins to interfere in this matter, but you are the same: otherwise worldly people would hate him. And what will happen among the brethren of that monastery, the abbot and fellow clerics of that monastery, with the elders of the Holy Theotokos, know otherwise; but the laity don’t need to, and don’t intervene, with my blessing.
And whoever decides to intervene in 1936 affairs in a monastery, in a hostel, or a prince, or a posadnik, or a judge, or a lay person, decides to seek something for a deceased monk, or a tribe or clan of a hostel, but do not look for that: he will go to the common life. And whoever begins to intercede with the laity, be afraid of what is written in Volodymer’s charter, in the manuscript, that such will not be forgiven, and you will inherit grief. 1937
In the original and from the parable.
In authentic followed by a - superfluous.
In the Historical Acts, a number of points are further added with the remark: “the ending is missing.” This is not visible in the original itself; the text of the message ends here almost in the middle of the page, before the letter of Metropolitan Cyprian, published above under No. 29. Only one date is missing.
