Prayer to the Lord God for mercy on the chosen people of God oppressed by other nations. In praise of the good wife. Sir.36:1 Have mercy on us, O Master, God of all, and look upon us, Sir.36:2 And bring Your fear upon all nations. 2. Explained in the following verses. Sir.36:3 Raise Your hand against foreign nations, and let them know Your power. Sir.36:4 As You showed Your holiness before them in us, so show Your greatness before us in them - 4. Just as before them, the pagans, You revealed Your holiness in us, Your chosen people, giving us Your holy laws and institutions for a holy and godly life: so before us, reveal Your greatness in them, enlightening them with the terrible and glorious signs of Your divine power. Sir.36:5 And let them know You, just as we have known that there is no God but You, O Lord. Sir.36:6 Renew the signs and perform new wonders; Sir.36:7 glorify your hand and your right arm; stir up wrath and pour out wrath; Sir.36:8 Destroy the enemy and destroy the enemy; Sir.36:9 Hasten the time and remember the oath, and let Your great deeds be made known. 9 . Hasten the time of the manifestation of Your mercy to us, remember the oath to our fathers, and may those punished and admonished by You proclaim the great deeds of Your just power. Sir.36:10 Let those who flee from the sword be destroyed by the fury of fire, and let those who oppress Your people find destruction. Sir.36:11 Crush the heads of the leaders of the enemy, who say: “There is no one but us!” 10–11. This refers to the foreigners who oppressed the Jewish people after their return from Babylonian captivity. Sir.36:12 Gather together all the tribes of Jacob and make them your inheritance, as it was at first. Sir.36:13 Have mercy, O Lord, on the people called by Thy name, and on Israel, whom Thou hast called the firstborn. 13. Wed. Life 32:24–32; Ref. 4:22. Sir.36:14 Have mercy on the city of Your holiness, on Jerusalem, the place of Your rest. Sir.36:15 Fill Zion with the praise of Your promises, and Your people with Your glory. Sir.36:16 Grant testimony to those who from the beginning have been Your heritage, and raise up prophecies in Your name. 16. Grant evidence of Your mercy to those who from the beginning were Your heritage, i.e. To Your chosen people, and raise up, restore, the prophecies in Your name, which ceased with the death of the post-captivity prophets Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Sir.36:17 Grant reward to those who trust in You, and let them believe Your prophets. Sir.36:18 Hear, O Lord, the prayer of Your servants, through the blessing of Aaron, for Your people - Sir.36:19 And all who live on earth will know that You are the Lord, the God of ages. Sir.36:20 The stomach receives all food, but food is better than food: Sir.36:21 The larynx distinguishes food from game, so the understanding heart distinguishes false words. Sir.36:22 A wicked heart will cause sorrow, but a man of experience will reward it. Sir.36:23 A woman will accept every man, but a virgin is better than a virgin: Sir.36:24 The beauty of a wife makes her face happy and is most desirable to her husband; Sir.36:25 If there is affability and meekness in her tongue, then her husband comes out of the ranks of the sons of men. Sir.36:26 He who acquires a wife begins his acquisition, and accordingly acquires an assistant, a support for his peace. Sir.36:27 Where there is no fence, the property will be plundered; and he who does not have a wife will sigh while wandering: Sir.36:28 For who will believe an armed robber wandering from city to city? Sir.36:29 So it is for a person who does not have a settled place and stops for the night where he is late. 20–29. Just as the larynx cares about the quality of the food it eats, the rational heart cares about the quality of the words it hears, and a well-bred girl cares about a stranger; So for a husband, the qualities of his wife are not indifferent: an intelligent, kind, friendly, beautiful wife is a joy, an adornment and a guarantee of prosperity for her husband.
