Whether it is still the youth of the years in which the soul loves to live in ideals, or the more true and lasting dissatisfaction of the mind and feelings established on the basis of the fundamental principles of good, sometimes carry me far beyond the limits of reality and excite me to desire its transformation in many respects.
There is a tempting desire to arrange your future destiny: - The future, as they say, does not depend on us, but I will say: however, it is also true that it depends on us. There is a part of it that is independent, and a part for us - from the first minute of time, which we could already, with moral and rational consciousness, call time - a gift from heaven for the organization of eternity - from this very minute, I say, belongs to us in the order of nature. So why am I not allowed to penetrate into times and into this darkness with my light? Why, here too, am I not allowed to choose for myself, in accordance with the decency of my rank, education, intentions regarding the way of life, some point, to surround myself with such and other persons, objects, circumstances, cases, and in them to outline for myself some plans of action, so to speak, to hang myself on the weight that over time, perhaps, will fall on my shoulders, to examine it from all sides - so that later it is more convenient to take it, and so on... Maybe some of these plans are successful, and will be suitable for bringing into reality.
- For example, now I owe my position to the passage of a certain science, I devote all my work and strength to it; I collect information related to it from various sources, and not only for its present teaching, but with even greater views and hopes for the future; and, of course, no one will blame me for this, although no one can assure me that I will be able to fulfill all my real demands on myself and reach the limit of my research; cannot even assure whether it will be given to me to continue these pursuits, let alone complete them. I attach this to my present subject of thoughts; pushing the limits of my example; instead of a particular, at certain times certain, purpose and occupation, I take the whole work of my life, I look at my main purpose and calling in the real world, expressed by the Sovereign World Ruler - in my birth, education, the present state of my internal and external state; I now stand at the point of final determination especially of this latter, so to speak, having already begun the course of my destiny, can I not say to myself, should I not say to myself: work, collect observations, lessons for the title intended for us by God; compare examples of those already operating where you want to act; explain instructions for yourself; be transported more often to this area of the future; find out more carefully his requirements for you; prepare little by little, from afar - in advance, to satisfy the experience; arm yourself against dangers; prevent the severity of poverty and impoverishment that can befall you - by thrifty collection and accumulation of the treasures of your inner wealth that you need: good rules, useful experiences, prudent plans for all cases...
These are the thoughts in which I took the pen to write in the title of the deliberately sewn notebook: My phantasms. I called these desires and dreams of transformations, and these plans and instructions for myself in the future - phantasms, because the truth of the future, and the destiny of transformations that will certainly take place, can only be in the mind of the One who acts higher than by human power.
So, viva, my fantasies!

In paganism, maternal tenderness invented special patrons and patronesses among the celestials - to accustom children to food: -Edusa or Edulia; to accustom them to drinking: Pontica or Potica; to train them to sleep, after the cradle, on the bed - Kubina or Kuba.

[1833] 0a common illness that afflicts the soul and body - carelessness about one’s salvation 2
The sources of Life and salvation are in God through Jesus Christ. There are many means by which one can approach this source and draw from it. But almost only one thing served me: attending public worship, although not only not always, but sometimes very rare. Other means, for example, reading spiritual books, good conversations, were not much sought, but if I sometimes used them, it was because they themselves came into my hands. The science that I do has led me to little. The people who surround me, intentionally and unintentionally, imparted good instructions to me and aroused good desires. My prayer at home was very insufficient. Quite often I went to bed and got up without proper prayer. It also happened that sometimes, walking alone for a few minutes in the morning or evening, I turned to the Lord within myself and asked for His light, reinforcement, and cleansing of my sins. And it even seemed to me that there was no particular need to observe the accepted forms of prayer, for example, reading well-known prayers, intercessions, and prostrations.
There was no fasting or special abstinence from food at all.
Prayer in the church is often cold and entertaining. If it happened that there were zealous agitations, then vanity tried to suppress them. It took possession of my soul, as soon as the prayer stopped, and inspired me that I was doing no little for my soul. I tried to limit it, but more in my thoughts than in the deed itself. The pleasure of doing a good deed was pleasant to my proud heart.
Is it really necessary to live with God? Is this how to remember Him? Is this how to serve Him?
If I start to sort out my affairs according to public duties, I will find them in no better position. Their root is not the desire to please God, to glorify Him, but sometimes a dead sense of duty, sometimes even worse, the impulse of curiosity. Was there often a desire in one way or another to lead to a clear knowledge of God the All-Ruler, the Most Good and the Holy? Wasn’t it always true that one’s own pride was also mixed in in this case? Moreover, how many violations of duty, due to various circumstances, which often happen in our hands and whose favorable or unfavorable disposition for our good depends a lot on ourselves? Slowness in business, lax fulfillment of demands and responsibilities, avoidance of duties and deeds of pleasure - aren’t these the kind of vices that my conscience accuses me of?
In relations with others, is it always remembered in my memory that not a single rotten word should come out of my mouth? Aren't inappropriate jokes, small talk, unfavorable comments about others the best way to spend time in society? How untalkative the tongue is for soulful conversation! - And insincerity?
– And in the heart? – How many feelings of envy, jealousy, pride, self-dreaming, whims, perseverance, willfulness.
The first tribute to my parents is love and respect. “Am I not making my mother shed tears and lament for me?” Lord, resolve this knot.
Natural law commands those who love to repay with love and everything! - Do I not offend their ardor towards me with a deaf heart? Am I putting them in a hostile mood, am I giving them reasons for various griefs? Am I inclined to forgive the grief caused to me? Is anger flaring? Doesn't anger remain in the heart? Have you ever been in such a state as to pray for an offender? - Meanwhile, this is a positive duty of a Christian!
Do we have the proper rigor where it is needed? Did you value my and other responsibilities too little?
Anyone who ever feels cold to prayer should remember Jesus’ prayer. In general, Jesus praying appears to us only from the human side. And this man, the most exalted of mortals - in mind and heart, always carrying within himself the consciousness of his greatest purpose, great powers - always finding Himself so close to the Divine - prays! - and His prayer fulfills special powers - without prayer he does not begin any of the important actions. - What an example, what a strong motivation for a follower of Jesus to never give up prayer. A Christian must be completely dead, and must cease to be a Christian, so as not to feel unceasing prayer. This is the breath of the spirit. Just as the life of the body is supported by bodily breathing, so the life of the spirit, the true life of a Christian, is supported by the movement of the heart in prayer. The very public prayers performed during Divine services should be only temporary manifestations of inner prayer, and hence not the only experiences of Christian prayer.
Moreover, everyone should turn public prayers with his own spirit into private prayers. But experience shows that this is possible only under the condition of keeping the spirit of prayer in your heart. Anyone who does not engage in prayer, if not unceasingly, at least with frequent prayerful appeals to God in his heart, cannot have a fervent spirit in public prayer. So, we must learn little by little to open the mouth of the spirit in our prayers, so that the Lord will fulfill them with His gifts, just as a mother puts food into the mouth of a chick. The more we open, the more we will be filled. But our very first attempts will be pleasing to the Lord, just as it is pleasing to a mother to hear the first completely incomprehensible babble of a baby calling her mom.
I was not davicha 4 with you, forgive me. Somehow I didn’t want to go out into society again because of the crowds. I wanted to be alone, and I was. This day gives me a reason to talk about myself with you. It pains me that I am becoming more callous every day. Coldness, prudence, based on some kind of mistrust, eat into me like rust. It’s been a long time since I started a task with cordiality, I haven’t met the day with joy that God gave it to me. And meanwhile I work like this, as if forced by some kind of necessity, with all severity I analyze and humiliate all manifestations of free enjoyment of life. At the same time, one cannot be without secrecy: those who are distrustful are secretive. The discovery of free feelings seems to be not allowed for me and that is why they remain absorbed in my soul. Many died without yet opening to full life. It is an untimely autumn, but an early autumn. When this time came, then I thought so: this time was too little.
And even now what takes place is not clear, mature, calm reflection about life and everything that occurs in life, but often, with old outbursts of feelings, the cold lifelessness of the thinking mind. Sometimes the whole soul is embraced by some kind of spleen; it is necessary to begin with mechanical exercises in order to arouse little by little the higher activity of the mental forces. This is simply a corruption of mental forces, which occurs, as it seems, from the fact that they are not given the right movement.
Letter to the Rector of the Irkutsk Seminary.
1840 January 22. Having once had the happiness of being under your control and from under your leadership entering the present place of my teaching and service, I caress myself with the hope of not being completely alien to Your Reverence. The departure of my brother to your region, entering the Beijing mission, with the desire to get acquainted more easily and closer with the East, gave me the opportunity to testify to Your Reverence my deepest respect and ask for your favorable participation in the young traveler, your fellow countryman and a foreigner to you. My brother, after two years of studying at St.P.B. The Spiritual Academy, when a demand opened in Beijing, asked our parents for consent to enter there as a secular student. Having been accepted into the mission by its current chief, upon leaving the Academy he received from it, by examination, the degree of Candidate of Literary Sciences. After finishing his business at S.P.B. came to us in Kostroma for Christmastide and, as he writes to me from home, on the 12th of this January he set off on his journey.
Here is a brief idea of the person whom I have the honor to recommend to your Highness. Do not abandon him with your hospitality: in a foreign country, everything native is especially precious...
1840 Jan 22 How many times have I heard from Matvey Ivanovich, you, perhaps more than others, maintain communication with our abode of teaching. That is why I decided to resort to you with my most humble request.
My brother Vladimir, whom you may have seen at my Academy, will soon need to be in your area. He studied at S.P.B. Academy. But after living for two years, on the occasion of an opening request for the Beijing mission, he decided to leave everything and go to the Celestial Empire; our parents gave in to a strong desire, no matter how bitter it was for them. Now he is on his way to his destination. – The Academy awarded him the degree of Candidate of Literary Sciences for passing the exam; There will be enough advantages in the future on the chosen path; his comrades along his journey and service were mostly from the same Academy; China has a lot to see and learn for the inexperienced. All this is good, but all this, both for him and for us, is still not enough to eradicate the sadness of separation.
One way to make up for this lack of personal communication is correspondence, although that between the borders of our empire and the capital of the son of heaven does not and cannot have such rapid movement as ours. I heard from my brother that letters from Russia to members of the mission and back, from members of the mission to Russia, are sent with messengers, which on various occasions are two or three times a year. Irkutsk General Gub. sends to Beijing, and that letters brought from Beijing then arrive at S.P.B. The Asian Department and from it are already being sent out according to their affiliation. All this can neither be accelerated nor changed in any way. But we could at least make the length of correspondence periods a little easier for ourselves if we knew exactly when our letters, delivered to the Governor General for forwarding to Beijing, would actually be sent there, and then how soon we could expect an answer to them with the return of the messenger from Beijing.
This is what I intend to bother you with with my request. Can you take the trouble, according to my letters to you, to visit the office of the General Governor, when exactly our letters will be sent abroad and how long it will take for the Russian messenger to bring the letter from Beijing; and when you receive information about this, report it in a letter to me, or to Matvey Ivanovich. This seems necessary to us due to our impatience, at least for the first time. Subsequently, we ourselves, perhaps, will get used to this order of correspondence.
As I pass through Irkutsk and brother, I hope that I will see you personally and talk about it. I humbly ask you not to let me know how and what you will decide between each other regarding my request.”
1853 January 14th In the Evangelical parable (Matt. 20:1) it is depicted how the Heavenly Vertogradar, having built vineyards for himself, went out to the marketplace early in the morning, so that the memory of the workers would come to him and, having consulted with them on a penalty for the day, he sent them to work in his garden. But not content with this initial number of workers, he then went out several more times, at different hours of the day, to invite those who were still standing idle to work in His rich vineyard, for the same agreed payment.
The Day of the Lord is great; it is not measured by the revolution of the earth around itself once. His hours are not short-lived epochs for the world. And just as our clocks do not begin for the whole earth at one moment, so His clocks, determined by the position of the world in relation to the ever-shining Sun of Truth, in their own order, according to their own law, move from country to country.
In the early morning of the great and enlightened day of the Lord, those chosen from the people of God and from the peoples who then dominated the world with their education and their power, the Greeks and Romans, were called to the heirloom of Christ. The light quickly went from the East to the West, and in Europe the day of work in the city of Christ arrived. At that time, when some begin to crowd into its gates, the Lord calls on new workers - and at His voice the peoples of the Germanic tribe go to His helicopter city in mixed waves. The most populous Slavic tribe still remained idle in the Eastern half of Europe. Finally, the voice of the Divine calling touched him. - And we have already seen the firstborn of this tribe and language entering into action. The Russian Slavs followed him.
At first one might think that the best fate fell to those who preceded; they are appointed to lead the entire monolingual tribe; but in the field of labor they did not retain the primacy that they received at the beginning.
The fate of all tribes was already predestined in the plans of the Divine Industry! The fall of Rome from the purity of faith and the impending fall of Greece decided the fate of the northern Slavic tribes of Russia. The primacy was entrusted between the Slavic tribes, and a share of the main labor was given - not to those Slavic peoples who lay between Greece and Rome, but to those whose situation protected them from the disasters that threatened either from the falling Greece, or from the exalted Rome, by the North Slavic tribes. Giving primacy to the Slavic people, whose strong arms were strong enough to bear the burden and heat of the heat. The weakening of Greece, suppressed by the yoke of the false prophet and unfaithful Rome with the peoples once subject to it, in keeping the sacred deposit, placed on us the special burden of representing and protecting Orthodoxy. 5
This is the purpose of the Russian Church, determined by the historical course of events and our current situation. A high honor that can only be justified by hard work. To whom many talents are entrusted, much will be exacted from him. It is comforting to remember that our time has been appointed for us in our work; but we must be faithful to our time.
The life of the Church is revealed under the influence of teaching and worship. Observance of both in purity constitutes the character of Orthodoxy. In the life of the Russian Church one can notice predominantly the dominance of one element over another, and, moreover, first of Divine Services, then of teaching. The period of patriarchy comprises the first half. In the midst of the struggle in our southern[go]3[western] regions against Latinism, a new direction begins and moves to the North, merging with the general transformation of the state.
The Most Holy Macarius divides the History of the Russian Church into three periods: 1, the period of its complete dependence on the Patriarch of Constantinople (988–1240). 2, the period of her gradual transition from this dependence to independence (1240–1589). 3, the period of its independence from 1589.
But 1) the idea of dependence or independence of the Church does not explain much in our History. Then how, an external relationship cannot serve to determine the internal course of events, with its modifications, as a sufficient basis for dividing periods.
2) The characteristics do not always correspond to the periods. The question arises: in the second half of the second period, why was the Russian, Moscow Church not more independent than during the time of the patriarchs, that is, in the first half of the third period? - So, independence in fact (de facto) began much earlier than the establishment of the patriarchate in our country. And we had much more contact with the Patriarchs of Constantinople in the 17th century than in the second half of the 15th and 16th centuries. If they point out that in the second half of the second period the dependence of the Russian Church on the Patriarch of Constantinople continued at least in the South 3rd [Western] Metropolis of Kyiv: - let us note that such dependence continued during the time of our patriarchs, until the union of the Little Russian Church with the Great Russian Church under Patriarch Joachim.
[1854] I am not a politician, not a diplomat, and even in the summer I saw that the matter would not end peacefully. French agents traveled either to Italy or to the Slavs. We were silent; and this is how they acted: they wrote one note, and even that one out of place.
While Titov was in Constantinople, the Emperor did not know the state of affairs of Orthodoxy in the East, and how our relations with Turkey were weakening. Ozerov was the first to reveal this in a report to the Emperor: it did not fall into the hands of the Emperor. He waited for about 5 months for instructions on how to act; sent the second directly into the hands of the Emperor. Then only the Emperor learned the true state of affairs.
Back in July, the committee printed that the French had never sought any rights in favor of their coreligionists in the East. This was clearly an attack on Russia. One of the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote a refutation and presented it to the minister: he said that now is not the time to publish it. - In December, the official comes to Nesselrod: he greets him with the words: your book was published in Paris. He replies: it’s too late now. “Yes, it’s true,” the minister said, now it’s too late.
The Sovereign's letter (to Napoleon) is good: but it is incredible that it could now produce a revolution in the opinions that had already penetrated the people.
It is known by telegraph that Napoleon, upon receiving the Emperor’s letter, already announced that the Russian Emperor does not accept proposals for peace, that therefore a war with Russia is coming, that he, Napoleon, relies on the courage of the French, on his ally England, on the sympathy of Germany, which does not want the destruction of Turkey, that now an important role appears for Austria.
Austria itself is put in a difficult position, on the one hand by the anxiety in Milan, the inclination of Naples towards the French side; weapons in Temont; on the other hand, fears for the Slavs.
Schwarzenberg, dying, said that Austria would show Europe the most striking example of ingratitude.
They say that when Orlov was sent to Vienna to clarify the sincere dispositions of Austria, the Austrian Emperor assembled a council for deliberation. There's a bar here. Jelačić announced that he would break his sword and would not fight Russia; Schliep also announced. Radetzky sent to say that if war breaks out with Russia, he will resign: - and Radetzky first made a vow not to leave the current Emperor.
They were afraid to declare war, so as not to give rise to revolutions. But I don’t know whether it happened by chance or intentionally that all the instigators of revolutions are now in Turkey.–
In England there is a national spirit which permeates all parties.
Ave. Vicar 6 said that Vladyka showed him an extract from some German book, ed. in the world a hundred years ago, where the real coalition against Russia and its campaign were outlined in detail, with some peoples being named by their proper names. The fortuneteller lovingly turns to Russia, denounces it for adopting an anti-Christian spirit from the West and predicts many disasters for it. And Prussia, in his opinion, will be carried away by the course of events against Russia. And the Russian government will be pushed to the East. But Russia will finally gather its last strength, and while heavenly fire will strike Western Babylon, other cities will be destroyed by triumphant Russia and Sweden united with it. With the end of this war, somewhere in the East (in Jerusalem, Constantinople or somewhere else) the thousand-year reign of Christ will begin, peaceful, blissful.
The Emperor said about the Sovereign Emperor’s consent to peace that it came as a result of a conference with seven different proxies. All seven spoke in favor of peace, exposing the disorder of our finances, the insufficiency of weapons and the lack of good generals. When the Emperor listened to these voices, more than once he felt ill and left the meeting. In conclusion, he demanded that each vote be signed, and finally he himself confirmed the verdict with his signature.
Orlov is a supporter of peace more than others. When the meeting ended, the members of the meeting, leaving the Palace, began to hesitate among themselves whether they had done well in casting their votes in favor of peace. It was Bludov who began to say this to some other of his comrades (Fr. Leonid says: Meyendorff). And when he asked why he didn’t stand for the war. Bludov replied that he was killed by the opinions of others... This, they say, reached the Tsar, and the Tsar called Bludov to himself and reprimanded him for his instability (and the Tsar no longer has the previous power of attorney for him).
Leader is not approved for dishonest use of government funds at the expense of soldiers.
Vladyka wanted to write to the Holy Synod about the schism in Moscow, saying that his situation was in a desperate situation. There are no priests on Rogozhsky now: simple men serve there.
O. Leonid said: Bludov began his speech at the meeting with Op. different parties: some want peace, others want war. But Orlov objected: the opinions of the parties are better known to me than to anyone else. I think that those who want war are not at all familiar with our means of waging war. Konstantin Nikolaich said at the meeting that until he became a minister, he wanted war, but now, seeing the matter closer than anyone else, he wants peace.
1856 April 15. Having prepared for the service in the evening, he got up at 10 o’clock at night and spent about an hour still engaged in prayer. Within 12 hours, having completely gathered himself, he went to the cathedral even before the bell. Matins stood well. Likewise, the Lord led the mass to be celebrated without any difficulty. Only fatigue and emotional excitement from the feelings excited by the holiday, and probably by the presentation of his position, led him to some relaxation. Upon his arrival from church, he shed tears more than once - when he celebrated Christ with his family and when remembering those who were absent. The calm of sleep made him somewhat fresher, but his spirit was not cheerful. After mass, tired of walking up the stairs in the cathedral and to the priest, he returned again tired and complained of alternating - sometimes weakening, sometimes getting stronger - illness, in the form of intermittent fever. But this is hardly fair: because later in the evening he said that he felt good - the weakness in his legs was very significant.
The doctor assures that the strength upset by the disease should be strengthened by eating meat food. He advises in the spring to take advantage of the fresh fish soup and freedom from business in the village.
1856 April 16. Dad stood up with a pounding feeling in his stomach. The pain was quite severe, so my mother was especially alarmed by extraneous suggestions and sent for the doctor, fearing that there was inflammation in the intestines. I wasn't at home. But soon after my return, Doctor Poshekhonov also appeared. He recognized this illness as nothing more than a stomach disorder, ordered him to eat magnesia, drink mint and warm his stomach. - At lunch, dad only ate fish soup. I have no appetite anymore. By evening I began to feel pain in my head. Mama said that before he had pain in the left side of the lower abdomen, and that Albitsky also called it blockage.
April 17. In the morning I felt severe pain in the left side of my head, in the form of shooting, especially near the church. No fever. “They soaked the left side of the head in wine. At night I slept well until two o'clock in the morning; and from that time on there was no sleep.
April 24. We arrived in Krasnoe at half past five. In front of Salt, the horses stood in the middle of the road on the mud, so that they could not be dislodged by any means. It was necessary to call four men to pull the cart out. Meanwhile, we stood at this place for about two hours, and had to pay the men for their help. - In Soli, the river was very flooded; its width is more than half a mile. We had just moved under the pressure of a strong wind, and heavy rain greeted us. - There are very few villages on the road; almost no one passing through: the only ones we met were seminarians going to Kostroma. - Shcherbakov should be reprimanded for letting go of bad horses, and the coachman manages his business very poorly. - Straight to Koryakovo, to Pesoshnya, to Levashevo, to Soli and to Krasnoe. At Pesoshna we found the end of mass (at 1/2 o'clock), we passed by to the church. - We crossed the Volga in the fog. There were no troubles. But since the boat had to make its way between the ice floes. - Is it true that the ship was supposed to be in Kostroma on the day we left? If it was, then it’s a shame that I didn’t go on the ship.
The road in the villages through which we were driving was poorly traveled. In Levashev, rural (leave ik. was) so the right is worth the praise that Mikhail Petrovich brought up for her.
In Krasnoye Selo there was significant rain during our stay. Since our horses had not eaten their oats by time and had not yet rested at all, meanwhile a dark evening was approaching, at times rainy, they decided it was best to stop here for the night. In this way we spent in Krasnoye until half past two o’clock. Sometimes they took a good nap. - About Red Village. Red village! Why are you called Red? Is it because the pub is in a prominent place in your place? In the middle of the village, right opposite the church, although at a fair distance.
April 25. It didn’t help us that we fed the horses for a long time. As soon as we moved out of the apartment, the cord burst. We've recovered. As soon as we left the village, the horses stopped moving because the native was stubborn and wouldn’t go. They barely had time to move them from their place and took a few steps forward when they stopped again. Finally our patience ran out. The driver himself refused to carry us further on such horses. However, it took a lot of work at 3 o’clock in the morning to find other horses in a village where they don’t do cartage. With great effort we were able to convince the owner of the inn where we were staying to give us a lift at least as far as Tuposina. Finally he agreed for 2 rubles and [silver]. We left Peter with the horses when leaving Krasnoe Selo. The owner’s son, Feodor Pavlov, was traveling with us. The road to Tuposina is quite decent and there would have been few places where we could have encountered difficulties with the previous horses, if only the native had not been stubborn.
We rode for three hours until the new change of horses; and although we had a couple of country horses, we could complain less about the slowness than before when we rode troikas. From Tuposina they agreed to take us to Yaroslavl by postal service (26 versts) for 2 rubles. ser. When parting with the Kostroma coachman, we made the following calculation with him: I should have given him 6 rubles on my part, and 3 rubles on the part of the rider Sheshin. I gave 1 ruble. With. in Kostroma; 1 ruble, for an apartment in Krasnoye Selo and 30 kopecks. for transportation to Soli. So all I had to do was add 3 rubles. 70 kopecks, and 3 rubles for my companion. From this amount we gave Peter 1 ruble. 70 kopecks gray, and the rest of the money, 5 rubles, was kept for additional payment in Tuposin and Yaroslavl with the understanding that if the Tuposin cab driver takes less than 3 rubles, Fyodor Pavlov must deliver the rest to Peter. So in Tuposin we gave Fyodor Pavlov 2 rubles. ser. for travel from Krasnoye and 1 rub. surrender to Peter. We arrived in Yaroslavl at half past 11 o'clock. morning.
Jul. 10. I arrived at about 5 pm in Kostroma. Dad was lying in bed, so he couldn’t get out of it himself. On our first date, he announced that he was looking forward to me. And indeed, in especially difficult times of illness, he already ordered that one or another of his last orders be told to me in case he did not see me. Then I was told that I must fulfill his last will, expressed in a sealed package, which I must tear open and read in a meeting of all relatives on the day of death.
12th. At the invitation, Doctor Shchepetilnikov came from the city of Poshekhonov in absence. The new doctor directly announced that he could not give strength to the patient, but could only alleviate his illness, and prescribed a potion that was supposed to eliminate breathing difficulties. The medicine had too much of an effect. Therefore, on the 13th it was left, but on the 14th it was canceled: because there were increased relaxations of the stomach. It's a hard day for daddy.
15.My dad joined again. The day passed quite calmly. I’ll say (unintelligible) quite cheerful. - Sasha left by boat to Yaroslavl, and from there to Moscow.
16. On the night of 16, dad slept peacefully; He has apparently recovered, but he still has no appetite and doesn’t eat anything. His view of his situation also changed. Now he no longer talks about the proximity of the hour of death, and seems to regret that he has moved away. He says that with my departure it will be difficult to get him out of bed, there will be no one to read anything in the winter, and so on. “The whole day passed, thank God, well.”
17. The night at 5 p.m. passed calmly, but by morning dad began to moan more often. However, in general he is cheerful. - He spent the whole day not calmly; was gloomy. He especially complained of pain in his right leg. He gave Shchepetilnikov’s medicine (mixture) twice and smeared his leg with formic alcohol. - My sister went to the village.
18. I slept well the night of 18. During the day I smeared my leg with alcohol twice. But the patient does not feel any benefit from it. Complains of melancholy and stuffiness in the room.
19. The night of the 19th was turbulent. They also smeared my leg, but to no avail. I spent almost the entire day covered with a scarf. I ate some fish soup and semolina porridge with cranberry juice. Weak Both day and night he began to urinate involuntarily. He forgets himself and speaks ineffectively.
20. On the night of the 20th I woke up quite often. During the day he spoke little and was weak; With difficulty he walked with his feet to the chair. Many times, in my sleep and while awake, I urinated on the bed; and when I took the urinal, after much effort, I did not emit anything. I ate a little. Forgotten, for example. in the evening he asked: whose village is this, where do we live? - He ordered some monks to be fed: etc.
21. That night until the second hour was very restless. Moreover, my mother also became unwell. During the day, dad refused both soup at lunch and evening tea. And in general he became very weak. The pain from the right leg began to move to the left, so that now neither one can step firmly. He is especially tormented by the loss of urine: it is associated with terrible pain. Often during the day he took off his blanket, which, it seemed to him, was not put on properly. In the evening, when he usually develops the desire to talk, he mentioned that as if the day before yesterday he had an argument with Anna Kozminishna about some matter that she wanted to take to her home, to Anna Stepanovna, then dad says about himself that he kept it. He said this in response to my questions, to the following speech, made while taking off the blanket, which I mentioned above. “Take everything off me,” he said: they will give me other underwear.” -P. I. Metelkin, who visited the patient, suggested a sympathetic medicine for bedsores: “put two logs of pine firewood under the patient’s bed.” Done. Let's see what happens.
22. On the night of this date, waking up at 11 o’clock and having recovered from suffering from lack of urine, he asked: what is this terrible phenomenon? I asked: what? - He didn’t answer this for a while, then asked: what kind of surname is Artsybashev? - I said: this is the surname of one writer. - Here he is, said dad, he came to me, all fiery and attacks me. He wants to throw me into his hole. Turn me towards the wall so he doesn't push me into the hole. – I tried to dissuade him that there was no such enemy here, that against the enemies threatening him the best weapon was the cross and prayer, I myself repeated against them short appeals to the Lord God, the Mother of God, and suggested turning to the Guardian Angel. – But dad repeated this name for a long time after that, saying: Artsybashev attacks, Artsybashev overcomes. Drive away Artsybashev, this is the devil’s inspiration. - Dad’s consciousness not only in this, but in everything else then was very mixed. He was tormented by a lack of urine flow. My dad also asked me: where is your apartment? And when I said that it was in the next room, he said: far away. The night was generally quite restless.
In the morning, at the invitation, Fr. spiritual for communion of the Holy Mysteries. Dad was informed about this only an hour in advance and did not greet the news with great favor. He says that he should have been more prepared for this: communion is not something to joke about. He was alarmed by this untimeliness even during the reception of the sacrament. In general, this whole day was restless.
3 o'clock in the afternoon. They rubbed it all over with wine. -Forgetfulness (the word is illegible) with delirium began to appear. The state is more calm. “How will all this end?” asks the patient. He ate something very hot. “In his sleep he often calls on Christ the Savior. He woke up at 40 minutes of the 4th hour. And then he took medicine (mixture) for the first time, not without resistance at first. He complained that he was cold. - Doctor Nik. Evgrafych Shchepetilnikov said that this disorder in his mental powers was due to the detention urine, from the fact that urine has begun to be absorbed into the blood. It is difficult to achieve the previous full self-awareness, he said: this is not a fever that lasts for a certain period of time. (At the end of the visit, he told me in private, in response to my question, that my father’s situation is more dangerous than not; that this phenomenon is quite common in the course of the disease and usually precedes its decisive end.) - 25 minutes after the first taking of the medicine, it was down.
At the same time, dad again came out of his exalted state, like Davich at about 12 o’clock, that is, his strength temporarily fell to an extreme degree, but the spirit of idle talk, this new abnormal state of his illness did not stop, and again extraordinary energy appeared both in his voice and in his movements. But dad took the medicine only up to the 3rd spoon, he more decisively refused, however in the evening, at about 9 o’clock, he took another spoonful of glasses. “My illness,” says dad, is called “Brothers.”
23. At the beginning of the night, our patient slept for about an hour. The patient spent the night in forced calm, after his mother strongly insisted that the patient not interfere with the peace of others with his conversations. - And during the day he was calmer than yesterday. But there is more and more weakness in the body! -Where does this patience come from in a calmer, albeit less spiritual state? I think from the action of the medicine, which produced quite significant cleansing. - With all this, moans and screams often erupted from the strong, at times, pain (in the bladder?), and, unfortunately, sometimes immodest sayings and shouts. By the end of the day it got worse. He didn’t recognize many, or, more correctly, in spite of himself, he didn’t recognize them as the persons they really are and are very close to himself, for example, Anna Sergeevna, Anna Kuzmin[ishna], you. Gr. Rumyantsev.
24. I slept better than the previous night. In the morning A. M. Poshekhonov was there. Instead of any medications, he prescribed to use broth or broth from cereals, and drink almond milk. He explains the irritable state in dad from the accumulation of urine, which had no outlet. It seems that this is more correct than Shchepetilnikov’s explanation. The elder, delighted to meet his doctor, at first willingly followed his advice. The irritable state has passed (thank God).
In the afternoon, the illness became especially worse due to difficulty urinating. The groans and screams are terrible. I had to look for Poshekhonov’s help a second time, but I didn’t find him at home. Postponed until tomorrow. His feelings and expressions are beautiful in the midst of suffering 7... Frequently in a drowsiness, fragmentary readings from the akafest of the Mother of God were heard.
25. The night is restless. He said twice: I will die soon; I won’t live long. Suffering terribly from urinary retention. Poshekhonov prescribed bleached oil for calming the lower abdomen, ordered to ask Dr. Pavlov to release urine with an enema, but he, finding the bladder affected by paralysis and not in an inflammatory state, recognized this as useless and even inconvenient. The end of our elder is near...
I left the diary in a state of oblivion
26. The night passed quite calmly, although not without strong cries when the need to urinate was revealed. I spent the last hours of the night, the 3rd and half of the 4th, at the patient’s bedside. He was completely calm, as if the presence of a living person stopped any feeling of illness in him. Now it is appointed to once again give communion to the sick person. - The Lord brought us to fulfill this wish. Dad seemed pretty tired of this. That’s why it happened that at 11 o’clock in the afternoon they almost recognized him as already departing from this world. From three to seven he was really weak, then he got better.
27. I spent the night quite calmly. He said: it’s time to go home.
July 28. The night was restless, dad was often worried about his painful illness. From two to five o'clock I sat by his bed and even dozed, leaning on his pillows from the side. Often at night he repeated, it seems not always with self-awareness, some fragmentary expressions from the canon of the Mother of God and from the akathist. In the morning, when I was sleeping and my sister was sitting with my dad, he told her: how nice it would be to die on St. Day. Mother of God.-I went to the cathedral for late mass. After mass, when I come home, they tell me that due to the papa’s weakness, they sent for the spiritual father to come once again to admonish him with the Holy Gifts. Soon the invited priest actually appeared. After communion with the Holy Mysteries, mother asked him (quietly) to read prayers for the departure of his soul. Dad listened to everything, without asking or objecting. When the spiritual father left, mother invited daddy to bless us, and daddy, taking the image of the Mother of God of Feodorovskaya, blessed me, my sister, Olinka and the other grandchildren in absentia. In general, he was weak then, but we still thought that he would live with us until the night.
And after lunch they still expected 8.
1. Tell the Rector that I have started reading his article on the procession of the Holy Spirit. The article is good. Only he explains the words, for example, of Gregory ab utroque somewhat cunningly. But is it necessary, pointing to other places in his work, to make a reservation that here, in this place, ab utroque can be considered doubtful, and at the same time refer to Bader, who in the book: “Catholicism without papacy” pointed to some publisher of the works of Gregory the Theologian, which he directly says again that he corrected in some places his words... However, as you wish.
2. About F.A. Ser. He said that he did not answer, partly because of many matters, partly because he still seems to be serving little... I pointed out that he had already gone through a lot of plans. The Bishop spoke about masters who do not know how to write sermons. And he noticed: the time has not passed yet.
3. Peter S. wanted to hand over the book from himself soon.
4. It seems that Kapiton Iv. agrees to submit the work to the Academy of Sciences. They say they will give him a bonus. As for printing on the synodal account, you can’t really rely on it.
“Apparently the time has come when it is necessary to fight openly, as in the first times, without taking advantage of the patronage of secular power; but the church, persecuted by it, had to fight paganism and defend itself: so now it must fight with human wisdom. - From this the Bishop now moved on to the affairs of Constantinople.
We remembered the protest of the Geronts, the response to us from the patriarch and the people’s assembly. Public opinion is also against the Geronts, but in Athens it is printed that the Russian Synod supports the Geronts. I don’t know what they’re doing there (Arch. Grigory and Lykarev).
I submitted the opinion that the Synod, having received the list of protests of the Geronts, would not answer them himself, but would only write to them from the leading member Met. Gregory is also against only expressed regret about the division that has arisen.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, already bypassing the Synod, wrote directly to me, and I sent an answer with a notification in a letter to the Count: important: but there is no answer from him.
And the minister answered me that he was very glad, that he completely agreed with my view of the matter, and that if he dared to express his opinion, he would only consider not answering the gerons at all, but writing to the patriarch.
- I allowed you to submit a note about the salary increase.
September 3. On behalf of the Bishop, I had the honor to explain to our Most Reverend Archpastor, Vladyka Metropolitan of Moscow, Your Eminence’s thoughts on measures to improve our religious and educational institutions. He wished to see them stated in a letter and ordered to make for himself a list of the note I presented on this occasion, which was completely extracted from the half-sheets given to me by Your Eminence.
After reading this note and my personal explanations on some issues, His Excellency, releasing me to the Academy, deigned to say that his thoughts about what is contained in the note have not yet been fully determined, that at the present time, due to the accumulation of cases and bodily weakness, which prevented him from serving on some of the past holidays, he intends to take up the immediate consideration of the note, in time to communicate his opinion about the plan set out in it for the transformation of our average and lower schools
Your Eminence Vladyka! Don't blame me for not being able to do more. Your desire to involve the Saint of Moscow in the discussion about our educational institutions, as a matter that urgently needs to be addressed at the present time, was conveyed by me in the same and deeply sincere expressions in which you yourself, the Most Reverend Vladyka, deigned to explain to me. For my part, as much as I could, I tried to reveal the state of our affairs. And I hope that the venerable archpastor did not take his time in vain.
I take this opportunity to bring to your Highness the deepest gratitude for your favorable attention to me. I will never forget your patience in listening to all my quarrels, in your tireless readiness to resolve all my perplexities. May the Lord help you to successfully complete the begun review of our educational needs and measures to satisfy them and bring our religious educational institutions into closest compliance with the real needs of the Church.
The rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, Archpriest A. G., before returning to his place of service, in the first half of the coming week, humbly asked permission to introduce himself to His Excellency, G. Ober Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count Dmitry Andreich, intending to explain on the spot, to arrange a church in the Academy building for the Academic Divine service at the expense of the honorary guardian Tolokonnikov and asked permission for some of this subject questions.
I found an apartment in a hotel on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Ligovka, in the Ivanov Hotel, No. 3.
Sent on February 10, 1864:
1., is it possible to establish a church in the palace without reporting to the Sovereign Emperor.
2., is it possible without presentation to the Holy Synod.
3., can we hope to reward the church builders?
The idea of limiting each diocese in maintaining religious schools to its own means: a) does not allow the establishment of seminaries where these funds are insufficient. For example, in Astrakhan, and perhaps in many other dioceses, where candle collections are insufficient. b) does not allow control or supervision of the progress of educational affairs in divided dioceses. It is impossible to guarantee that every head of the diocese will have enough free time to be more closely involved in the educational part, i.e. not only by teaching science, but also by preparing funds for the maintenance of schools. Will everyone be quite disinterested so as not to use the collected sums on other items, or will they be happy to acquire disinterested performers? Is everyone sufficiently educated to lead all the clergy along their own paths? -c) will see fragmentation everywhere and nothing connecting. Our youth will not have in mind anything that concentrates the various parts of the huge Church.
Exceptions can be made in favor of remote parts, but the general order must be one: one force, one rule... Education must be reflected in life. And here there will also be disunity. And the center of unity of the Russian Church, the Holy Synod, will be lost from sight. Among the French, even if each bishop is engaged separately in his own seminary, then in the belief of the Church there is still a higher center that gathers everything to itself alone: this is the pope. What do we have? d) What will happen to the Academies? What do they need, what means do they need to support themselves?
The separate formation of complete educational institutions, such as theological gymnasiums, a) requires unnecessary expenses, b) deprives the entire course of the spiritual element. Now, throughout the entire study at the seminary, the student in each class, while studying other sciences, does not neglect to get acquainted with any parts of church education proper. Then this won't happen.
The collection of candle profits increases in proportion to the decrease in the number of churches and the increase in the number of parishioners. The fewer churches, but the more parishioners there are, the more one can hope [for] increasing candle profits. The more churches there are, the more wax is burned for their own use.
Without determining the number of students and those supported by the state kosht, without having an idea of the capacity of the existing debts for housing classes and students, without establishing salaries for students and without calculating how many mentors and parallel classes there should be, in a word, without drawing up an estimate of all expenses for the maintenance of educational institutions on the assumed basis, it is impossible not to ask the diocesan authorities whether they agree to accept all these expenses at the expense of their candle profits, but to say decisively that such and such the diocese may or may not do this.
The danger of the convenience of leaving our educational institutions for secular rank and service in some dioceses, for example, in Irkutsk. According to the new plan, it is increased by the very shortening of the course of study for obtaining a rank.
Strictly speaking, in the current context there is no strictly “general education”; much is attached to it that is closely related to spiritual education, such as reading Scripture.
Wouldn't it be useful to divide Committee meetings into small and large or full? The first, consisting of a few members, would gradually prepare the work, attend to issues, draw up draft solutions for them, and after a certain time would propose to think it over or for general discussion in full or large meetings.
– Idem, wouldn’t it be useful to divide among the members of the Committee the subjects that need to be discussed so that each two would offer their thoughts on this or that part of the school structure? The Small Committee would first discuss them in its meeting and then submit them for a general conclusion.
- Idem, isn’t it necessary to keep notes on all the subjects of discussion and on the decisions put forward, if not here in the meeting, then at home and at each new meeting, read in advance what was decided at the previous meeting, and, correcting, if necessary, what was written down, move on to further subjects of discussion?
- Idem. Is it not necessary to adhere to the established form for general meetings, first asking for the private opinion of everyone, and then expressing one’s decision, and not talk mixedly about both, interrupting the reasoning without a final conclusion?
– Is it necessary to completely banish mathematics? Then it will not be needed in the Academies either.
– Is it necessary to completely omit the Hebrew language?
– Is it necessary to completely omit the controversy? Especially against the split.
- Why don’t the clergy, who are more wealthy, send their children to theological schools? - Often out of inconvenience, raising them outside the home, behind the scenes, without proper supervision. - “Common apartments are necessary,” it is good to entrust them, if you like, to the clergy themselves. Let contributions be accepted not only in money, which is available in other places on the road, but also in material. Probably no supplier will deliver more accurately.
Everyone is aware that transformation mainly requires the education of spiritual youth. Programs may be changed, expanded or reduced.
– Is it not possible to decree that those who leave the seminary before completing the full course enter the civil service with the right to confirmation in rank after three years if they belong to the first category?
“And before, many people left the clergy, and now even more will leave, because the period for the first rank has been shortened by two years or even four.
1. What was done as a result of the requirement of the decree of June 26th, 1808, printed under the Drawing of the Rules, page 110, on the subject of candle sales?
2. How did the current position on candlestick profits come about?
3. Do they have, and what force do §§ 115 d., 147 a. b., and 151 Inscriptions of the Rules?
4. How were the salaries of masters and candidates determined?
5. When and why did the D.U. Commission refuse the annual allocation of 2,000,000 assigned to it by decree of June 26, 1808 (Drawn p. 13) for the maintenance of schools and parishes.
About rural teachers: Seminarians won’t go because the job doesn’t pay them. The government did not give money for this, because it would not have required 20,000, but about 3,000,000 rubles. And for the ministry the total expenses are 7,000,000.
I spoke about the disadvantages of competition with a strictly controlled number of students; 2, about illegal leaves of rural teachers. Against the 1st, he pointed out the parallel classes that are allowed to open to the clergy. Against the second, he pointed out the many unplaced ones in many Eparchies, for example, Tver up to 1000 hours, Tula 400, Moscow many.
The staff for the seminary is insufficient, drawn up for the most part according to the current situation of the seminaries.
I'll tell you a deep secret. Here the matter of translating Holy Scripture into Russian is repeated in the same form as it was in 1842. Only instead of Seraphim-Kyiv F., instead of Athanasius-Antony; but this matter was ordered to be referred to the Moscow Bishop for consideration. You will probably learn all the details from him. Tolstoy wanted to do the same thing as Protasov. Yes, thank God, who preserves the church, they warned him.
In February 1867, I reported in Moscow.
Ave. Ippolit Bogoslovsky.
2. About the order to A. Tolokonnikov.
3. About the Church for the Academy.
4. On the revision of the Charter for the Academy.
Notes on Rostislavov's book.
1. Ask about the matter for election and, taking into account the prudence of the o.o. archpriests and their activities in the diocesan service and private works, propose to elect 1) archpriest. I. Rozhdestvensky, 2) Al. Ave. Klyucharyov and 3) Nevostruev or I. Bogoslovsky Ave.
2. Didn't agree. There are more important matters for which a petition will be needed.
3. Also. No need.
4. I agreed to separate history from mathematics. Surprised by the haste. Not inclined to make significant changes.
1867 July 29. Conversation with Count D. A. Tolstoy about seminaries.
- Changes are being introduced well, as Sergius writes. Kostroma is even better than Ryazan. Only in Nizhny, for some reason, the clergy were too indignant at the rumor that their children would not be accepted into the seminary.
How do you like these reforms? - I answered: it is good that the clergy is called to participate in the education of their children and is interested in this matter, but one must be careful that they are not too suppressed by the demands for contributions given their meager funds. – He answered: the clergy cannot be left in this position, they need to be given funds 9 . My interlocutor noted that he did not agree with our O. inspector and Kievsky. It happened due to the separation of the theological course from the gymnasium course and [from] the exclusion of all theological subjects from the gymnasium course.
During the transformation, it was necessary to save the seminaries so that they would not merge with the gymnasiums. The Emperor, having heard all the bad things about seminaries, said: why do you need to take care of them, you have gymnasiums? The public was also prejudiced against us not only by such newspapers as Golos, but also by Moskov. [Vedomosti] with Moscow.
Read the article in Moscow. Week about the clergy and about schools. A lot of ridiculous things are said here, for example, it is necessary to eradicate the democratic class (decrees requiring the teaching of new languages in schools). - This newspaper stands for separating the theological course completely from the seminary and teaching it only in Academies. How inconvenient is this given the current situation? There will be a need for more academies than universities. Students will need to pay for education...
It is a pity that the Academies are located inconveniently: in St. Petersburg the Academy is on the edge of the city, Vashka is in Posad; Kazanskaya is outside the city, Kyiv is not closer to the city center.
He talked about reform at the Academy. Will start in winter. The committee has not been announced. What is incomprehensible to us is the opinion of the St. Petersburg Conference on the exclusion of some compulsory subjects from the Academic course, such as literature and history. - I noticed that the Chief Prosecutor sympathizes with this; He said that in the Russian literature class they teach God knows what. I pointed out the natural benefits that it can bring for the establishment of healthy principles of taste and criticism. And (at) you, the Chief Prosecutor attacked mathematics more than anything else. It won’t be needed at the Academy, because how much will they study at the seminary? Under the new conditions, he pointed out the incompatibility of electoral principles and self-government with the autocratic will of the Bishops: nothing will be reconciled.
He spoke about the composition of the new D[ukhovno]-U[teaching] Committee; I am pleased with it, but it still lacks two members-auditors: - about the Academic Board, as well as the proposal made by A. F-chu. - What a convenience for the exchange of this committee with those under the metropolitans! We will issue rules so that the 90 rubles allocated for the maintenance of a student. everything was spent on one, and not divided, as was the case before. We will also publish rules to resolve various misunderstandings known from real misunderstandings.
It was difficult to draw up the Charter of the seminary, because it was necessary to embrace the needs of the clergy throughout Russia, and it was impossible to treat the Bishops as officials of the seminary. This is not like gymnasiums in relation to secular civil superiors. The Academy's regulations will be easier.
Nowadays they no longer ask to leave seminary mentors for secular gymnasiums.
I asked about the difficulty for the Academy to prepare mentors for itself. Agrees to pre-cook them among homework. At the same time, he let it slip: when we hold a master’s degree, then it will turn out, as he did, that the Academies can exchange their ready-made scholarship holders.
[1869] 3 February. I arrived in Moscow on the morning train. Here it was explained why the Chief Prosecutor directly approached His Eminence Leonid with an offer to him of the Nizhny Novgorod chair: this was done at the personal prompting of the Sovereign Emperor, who ordered the Chief Prosecutor to write about this to the Eminence. In relation to the Chief Prosecutor, he pointed out the needs of the diocese, which has a good location and “demands a worthy Bishop for independence of management and for the prospects of great eminence in the future.” It was added that the Chief Prosecutor also communicated with the Bishop. Regarding this, it was written on January 22. -But the Right Reverend Leonid refused the offer, pointing out his illnesses and his previous renunciations of similar proposals, and asked for temporary rest, either in the Savvin Monastery, which, as he puts it, is not connected with the vicariate, or in Dubenskoye. -At present, the Right Reverend has already received notice that the Emperor has graciously accepted his reluctance to be at the Nizhny Novgorod department.
And I was instructed to thank the saint, who, having received information from the Right Reverend about his own refusal, thanked him that although he was looking for peace, but not yet.
The Eminence instructed to ask the Bishop by what time the rectors should prepare their comments on the Charter.
– Books were delivered to Riga. to the office of the Nadezhda company on February 3 for No. 60, 276, in one box, priced at 500 rubles.
“I sent you to Sasha, but he’s on duty.” Apparently I won’t have to see him. - No, we saw each other before leaving Moscow.
February 24. Monday. In the morning I visited the Rector of the Academy I. L. Yanyshev. We were engaged in the approximate distribution of the hours of the day of the sciences taught at the Academy. Then at Sergievsky's. He spoke about the decision in the Belikov case. I begged him not to be reprimanded and put on his record. Then I learned about the appointment for 200 rubles. to us, invited to the meetings. In the evening at a committee meeting. I read the magazine on the 14th and our next two meetings. Next, revisions of the Eminences’ comments on the Charter regarding the power of the Bishops began. It was regrettable to see too light an attitude towards such fundamental issues. Ave. Nektary was tearing out something from the notebook lying in front of him, for example, about supplementing the instructions for the affairs of the Theological Academy, about limiting the power of the bishop, about the rights of the Council, about the influence of the Bishop on the approval of academic degrees. The university members of the Committee especially rebelled against the latter; and when the votes were collected, only four turned out, including mine and the Rector of the Kyiv Seminary, in favor of maintaining our previous order. M. I. Bogoslovsky, Dr.
was rude about this issue. Sergievsky said: “in favor of the Bishops, but with the majority.” Rector Yanyshev is against the influence of Bishops on academic degrees. As you can see, he is very disliked by our hierarchy; he interprets that circumstances will force him to give up monasticism in the Hierarchy. Sad. In this sense, he spoke out this morning when I was with him. It would be impossible, he said, to entrust the position of Bishop to some simpletons.
February 25. Tuesday. Day of departure from St. Petersburg. God bless! Was with the Vladyka. He said that on Sunday the Chief Prosecutor called on him about the note (see my entry on February 6). I completely agree with the first one and don’t find any difficulty. To the second he objected that the zemstvos are abandoning our teachers; I have five reviews of this kind, and they themselves are not working. But if we make it a rule that they should not be promoted to priests before the age of 25; and previously they held the position of clerks or rural teachers, then the difficulty will be eliminated. Meanwhile, the Bishops will try to get along with the leadership of the zemstvos. - On the third, about this, says the count, he argued a lot with the late M. Now it's even more inconvenient. A party may form in Little Russia, in other outlying areas, and the whole will fragment. I have more thoughts about a general cathedral. You need to try hard about this. The fourth is very good, but for some reason women’s monasteries are excluded? I can see who they are gathering for work. On to the fifth. The election by lot seemed extraordinary. But Vladyka pointed out, for example, Tikhon the Holy.
Sixth, about Sunday conversations with children - I’m very happy. Must do! Is it possible with everyone? (At the same time, the Vladyka pointed to the tempting last election to the bishopric. The Count replied: it’s better not to say)... Thank God, it seems that it will be better to honor our Vladyka. Before leaving, I visited the Chief Prosecutor. The Count thanked for participation in the Committee: he spoke about the proposed distribution of sciences; I doubted that they would not fully accept his destiny. “Now I have a lot of mathematicians, but not yet enough in human languages.” There are few teachers ready even for the Russian language. - He said that it is necessary to reduce autonomy; that in the University Charter there is a lot that is not useful, which is carelessly adopted by our new Charter. I pointed to yesterday's meeting; about the multitude approved in degrees. The Count at first defended, but then admitted that the Bishops, as guardians of Orthodoxy, had the right to pay attention to this.
Now will this happen through consistories? - He spoke about disagreements, about nepotism among the Synodals - in some of them. - He spoke about the salaries being prepared for the consistory; now it is allocated up to 200, but it was supposed to be up to 600, so the secretary will receive 1500 rubles each, four members will receive 500 rubles each. In conclusion, when he left, he thanked him again for allegedly being useful with his experience and kindness.
I went to see Nikolai Alexandrovich from the count, and they talked about what I didn’t like about yesterday’s meeting.
June 8. After Matins on Spiritual Day, Vladyka called me to him and spoke about the fate of the note he submitted about the shortcomings in the current Seminary Rules. In addition to this note, compiled by the rectors of the seminary, he briefly, in a letter to the Chief Prosecutor, again made an indication of these shortcomings, with some additions of his own, such as: about the importance of spiritual education for the Church and about his readiness to transfer half of his consistory affairs to spiritual justices of the peace, so that it would be more convenient to prepare the best ministers of the Church.
To consider this note and letter, a special meeting was appointed not in the Presence of the Holy Synod, but at the Novgorod Metropolitan, where all members of the Synod gathered with the Director of the Office of the Chief Prosecutor - Sergievsky. Protopresbyter Bazhanov, with his first appearance, already made it clear what was to be expected from this meeting. Appearing at the Assembly, he expressed extreme displeasure at being torn away from enjoying the wonderful spring time in Tsarskoe Selo: “What kind of important matter forced this meeting? A denunciation to the Holy Synod?” And then, when the reading of the letter and note opened, only one made connections to the words, more than others made his remarks on them, caustic and offensive, so that our Lord found himself forced to say: “Leave the expressions; select them especially and judge me for them and sentence me to anything, but do not leave the matter unattended.
From time to time Isidore made some comments, along the lines of: “There is no need to get excited.” Metropolitan Arseny did not say anything, but he responded to Bazhanov’s barbs with a sympathetic smile, and treated the face of Moscow with a kind of contempt. The others were all silent, neither spiritual nor secular said anything, only Vasily of Polotsk said something in favor of the Bishop.
After Vladyka Bazhanov’s due reservation, he did not stop exclaiming: it’s a pity, what a pity that he put it that way, oh, how pathetic it is!.. - The Metropolitan again told him: leave your regrets, you can judge me for these phrases, but tell me whether the comments are sensible. - The entire note was read very briefly at one meeting, without any reasoning about the subjects it concerns. Neither Makariy, nor Rozhdestvensky, nor the Chief Prosecutor said anything. And a resolution was put forward: the Synod saw these shortcomings, but there was no means to correct them (and something else that the Bishop does not remember).
The Kyiv himself previously told our Bishop that it was necessary to insist that the opinions of all the Bishops be asked. At the meeting, when our Vladyka pointed out this measure, they objected to him that this would lead to a violation of the Sovereign’s command not to publicize this matter. And despite the fact that the Bishop on different occasions stated this demand three times and, in order to eliminate publicity, proposed not to mention the real reason at all; but to take advantage of some other circumstance and propose a question - no one supported this demand. And Kyiv did not say a word in his defense.
Not many days later (two days later) a protocol was drawn up for this meeting, but not for M. Isidore, but for the Synod (Isidore was not present). The original signatures of the protocol with the above resolution were signed by Kyiv first. Our Bishop at first refused to sign, but Kyiv persuaded him and reasoned that there would be no one to review the protocol other than the same members of the Synod, that the division of the Synod could become public and give reason to the schismatics to say that when the word of truth was soon heard in the Synod, the Bishops themselves quarreled among themselves. - He gave in. But Vladyka demanded that they give him a copy of this protocol: the Chief Prosecutor promised him, but still has not sent it. And the meeting regarding the note was on May 6th.
Kyiv later expressed displeasure at why they didn’t show him the note first, while he himself delivered him the materials for it.
After that, the Chief Prosecutor became especially attentive to the Lord. And when considering the Academic Charter, using the reasoning of our Bishop, he declared himself against the election of the Rector Academician. The conference was also against leaving all matters to the Council, although in the latter case he pointed out the difficulties this caused in universities.
June 26. Previously, we looked at exams condescendingly; lied - we demand to tell the truth.
Few answered satisfactorily, only one answered well; otherwise they got confused, moved from one question to another, or gave fragmentary answers. (I noticed that this was the case with only one). - The lessons are taught correctly, but care must be taken that they are better understood by the students: they need to master their thinking through a strict logical presentation of the lessons. It has happened before that students are eager to answer private questions. Now they stand nearby and say nothing. And in Bethany they call two at a time to the table: and you call three at a time. Preface students that they may ask for grades, they will send secular people to inspect the Academy, and then, in order to show their attentiveness, they will try to take advantage of all sorts of shortcomings.
The students speak quietly, inaudible to the public; one continues to draw out sounds, connecting words with them.
The students' success is weak because they read a lot of extraneous things and do extraneous things, write in spiritual magazines.
Previously, at the end of the course, some essay was prepared for publication. Now they have stopped doing this.
It’s not entirely untrue that “The Bell” says that the late Emperor made so many fools of the generals that they would last for 100 years. All of them are now blocking the way for others. - The late Emperor boasted that he made you Minister of War. Dolgoruky. What kind of minister? He made Panin minister, took him from some of our agents in Greece. What happened? A man with information, but stubborn.
July 30. At about three o'clock, upon arrival from the Vladyka, the Chief Prosecutor came to see me. We talked about the natural sciences, in their connection with the theological ones, and about the difficulties in identifying our students according to the new order; about audits of specialists through Academic mentors, about Boponets.
July 31st. Instructions for collecting information regarding councils: when? Where? On what occasion? composition of persons and method of action at the council? where is the information?
On September 10, 1869, I saw Firs Veresov, Sergiy Solntsev and Iv in a drunken state. Vladislavlev. The first one was especially drunk. Since the first of these students was noticed in this vice not for the first time, it was announced to him that he would be demoted to the second category in terms of behavior. And I reprimanded the last two.
At the same time, junior student Dmitry Lyuberzky was also noticed to be not entirely sober. I also reprimanded him.
September 13. A reprimand was made to senior student Nikolai Nikolsky for showing up late after vacation, under the pretext of illness, for which he had not presented a doctoral certificate.
September 16. At eight o'clock in the evening, passing by the tea room of the junior building, I heard someone playing the violin, found student Georgy Reis there at the violin and made a reprimand for untimely playing.
- Then, on the occasion of senior Bezrodnin’s absence from duty, he called him to him, in the presence of the duty officer Nikolai Ivantsev, who came to me with a report on the course, reprimanded Bezrodnin for the fact that he had arbitrarily avoided fulfilling his duties as a senior, and added that since (he had) the position of a clerk, it befits him to properly deal with student affairs, and since he did not fulfill the responsibility of a senior, then let him not consider myself as a clerk and having moved to live in the student rooms, that in his place I will transfer another student to the Board, so that he will be a senior, although he will not be a clerk.
September 23. The Bishop said that the Chief Prosecutor, who was in Moscow this summer, again declared his consent to the establishment of a Council, only not an ecumenical Council in advance, but a Russian one, consisting of only Russian Bishops, but he would not agree under any circumstances to the division of the Russian ecclesiastical region into districts and the establishment of local councils. This division, in his opinion, could lead to disintegration, with the rejection, for example, of the Vilna, or Little Russian, or Georgian district. The Chief Prosecutor added that “and the Sovereign told him: do not rush into this matter; and I answered him that neither I nor the Metropolitan demand this quickly.” Then, in response to his last words, the Bishop said that the Chief Prosecutor only had him in mind among those who wanted the Council.
To establish a Council, it is first necessary that the Synod draw up questions and announce them to the Bishops for discussion, and that these questions be the subject of free discussion in spiritual literature, so that all Academies and even secular literature deal with them pro or contra. – For the first time, there is no need to ask many questions. In our country local councils may subsequently become all-Russian; when they are recognized as necessary, then the state will not dare to deny them to the Church. - It would be necessary to send someone to the future Roman Council to monitor the external order at these councils.
The Chief Prosecutor said that he had drawn up a note and would certainly submit it to the Sovereign, about assigning decent salaries to the clergy and establishing a land tax for this, that they are opposed to this now, but they will be forced to do this when, even in the clergy, with the destruction of the estate now, more and more will come out, and outsiders will not enter it, due to the poor content. “I myself, as a nobleman,” added the Chief Prosecutor, “must in the future pay the 30th part of my lands in favor of the clergy.
In general, Vladyka noted that after the well-known story with the note about the seminary Charter, he sees more compliance in the Chief Prosecutor. Lately, when reading about the councils, the Chief Prosecutor directly said, “that he himself is ready to reduce his power if we are on the way. I’m already, he said, tired of reading all sorts of papers myself! I’ve already handed over a lot to the Comrade.” These words, the Bishop added, prompted me not to talk about the elevation of the power of the leader in the Synod, so that the main concern for the affairs of the Church rests with him. This should take place by itself with the opening of the Council, as a necessary requirement.
Ave. Kazan, says the Bishop, is for a private Council. But one must be wary that by going against the consent of the secular authorities, one may not get anything.
1869. Our clergy does not act from the outside, like Catholics, but educates itself. In good and pious priestly families, good deeds are still maintained. Therefore, there is no such intense need to protect the growing youth from communication with the outside world, as among the Latins.
My former archpriest of the Kazan Cathedral, Mikhail Zabolotsky, spoke with deep sorrow about the unrest taking place in churches with candle money.
Wouldn't it be necessary to keep schools as well? Where will the clerks be trained?
Where will applicants to the Academy come from? Where can one learn the rules of priestly life? The beginning of theological schools in the church of St. Irene, about Polycarp 10. Plans (lectures). Catechetical school. Monasteries.
Do our seminary instructors have too few hours? Isn't it better to have few but good teachers and reward their efforts well? There are many of them, and they are poorly rewarded. Is it not known that some people devote too much time to cards, etc.? And others have little time to read problems. How many hours do the gymnasium tutors have?
One-year courses instead of two-year ones will require double the number of classrooms and tutors.

“This record will belong to me alone and be accessible and known alone: therefore, here I do not need to fear any condemnation or censure for the nonsense of judgments, or for the incorrectness of sensations, except for the condemnations and censures of my own mind and heart, in more mature years, in calmer hours.
I write what I want, how I want, when I want.
Today I feel lighter than yesterday: my soul is calmer, but there is some kind of wound that I don’t seem to have touched yet, but it’s already aching; to heal her would seem to mean giving me complete peace. “This wound is a sin,” someone said to my soul when, having completed the previous paragraph, I stopped to think about writing further. Sin lives in us: who will drive it out of the warm lair that it finds in our hearts, if not You, the All-Powerful Conqueror of sin and sin-parent? - Oh, defeat it in me too; Make me also a vessel of Your righteousness!”
In book 34, on page 104 4, a new letter dated January 26 begins with a paragraph. There is a small gap against the original. The original reads: [January] “26. I was silent for quite some time! – on the 24th I was at the farewell to Father Evlampia,” and further).
On page 127 13 the word “only” is omitted: “When dogma is considered only as a Divine thought” and further...

“Lack of daily self-examination.
Lack of prayer and, in general, living contact with God.
Compassionate devotion to the Lord. Pride and self-dreaming - and despondency in humiliation.
Unloving treatment of those who love me.
Vain curiosity.
Nonsense in correcting the responsibilities that lie with me.
Lack of proper stewardship in the use of d.” [money? talents? property?]

"July 14. I am much to blame before you for my long silence in response to your request. The promise I made was not forgotten, but in part it did not seem so important to me that it was necessary to rush to fulfill it, in part it was eliminated by other things. Now that I have become freer, I make it my first duty to fulfill what I promised. I am transmitting to you a) a list of the first word of the current Archpastor of Moscow, with which he drew special attention to himself Metropolitan Plato, according to legend; - and b) a copy of the manuscript in the written interpretation of the Prophets, kept in the Lavra Library, with some comments. End of entry November 15, 1858:
"Prince Alexander Nikolaevich was my benefactor, but I allowed myself not to completely agree with him. When I was Yaroslavl, he published some book in which the first half was written against the Roman [Church], and the second was about the inner living word, with the proceeds from the sale earmarked for the poor. I sent the prince 10 rubles for the poor, but refused to distribute the book. Afterwards I found out that the Metropolitan did the same. Mikhail did the same. The prince demanded that I correct it for the second edition, but I refused... Another time I acted in a similar way against a book: about imitation of the infancy of I. Christ... - And having become a Moscow Lavra, I learned that Seraphim ordered it to be read at meals. In these books they paid attention to what was written against the Roman Church, but they did not understand that, written against him, it went against our church. “The prince was angry with me, but I reasoned that although the prince is a kind person, I, as a Bishop, should have other church interests in mind, I repeated my way of thinking by communicating my judgments to the Metropolitan.

On December 5, 1861, S.K. Smirnov forwarded to A.V. Gorsky his “History of Trinity Seminary” in manuscript, corrected according to A.V.’s comments. Along with the manuscript, the following letter was sent, interesting as proof that A.V. very carefully corrected other people’s works. Here it is:
"Dear Alexander Vasilyevich! I have the honor to forward to you the History of Trinity Seminary, I corrected it according to your comments. I only left the following passages for your discretion and correction (for I was given little time for correction):

O. The rector also wishes that the article on dishes be shortened. I leave this at your disposal.
Forgive me for daring to bother you and steal your precious time. I am encouraged by the hope of your goodwill towards S. Smirnov, who sincerely respects you.”
At the end of the letter, A. V-ch wrote in pencil:
"a) The remarks about the Theology of Athanasius should have been believed with a book in hand, and not corrected at random. The first was not done. I did not dare to take on the second.

There is not much to give in salary, and an allowance of one and a half thousand would not be enough to support everyone.
Discussions about the organization of the Higher Educational Administration were the subject of conversation when the Chief Prosecutor visited me, in the presence of the same persons, i.e. the rector of the A[cademy] and the rector with the inspector of the Beth[an] seminary. At the same time, he expressed that he also expressed to the Emperor that he would not be as compliant as Prince Sergei Nikolaich, that firmness was needed for the fight: in the State Council, among the ministers, there was not a single one who sincerely stood for the church. According to the Empress herself, there used to be sympathy for her, but now even hostility is developing.
At the same time, the Chief Prosecutor spoke about the project already carried out through the Holy Synod regarding pensions to the clergy, about his relations with the state controller Tatarinov regarding the release of interest on the capital of 4 ½ million, allocated for pensions to the clergy back in 1861.”

"The Synod often studies reports from the Eminences about various disorders on the occasion of the introduction of the new Rules in the seminaries. I spoke, Vladyka, I’m just silent. - Recently there was a question, should those expelled from it not for vices be accepted back into the seminary? - The answer was given: allow it if the summer has not passed.
“And how many years,” the Vladyka objected, will we be allowed to accept with well-known church erudition? - They answered: twenty-eight years old. How is this possible? - Vladyka objected. Over 16 years of age cannot be accepted due to age; “Can 28 be allowed?” “The Chief Prosecutor,” the Saint noted, “didn’t object to anything.”
2549. You need to read: “The Bishop asked about Father Michael’s illness.”
255 pp. The letter of February 5 ends thus 20:
"They forgot to ask the Bishop about the church. In the Synod there was a discussion about electing a new bishop to Nizhny. They proposed one this, another another (SP-Burgsky for his vicar, Kyiv for his). Our Eminence pointed to Theophan, and when Bazhanov noticed that there was no example of someone who had retired again entering the diocese, he reminded him of Peter. But this one, for the same reason, is only considered a candidate. They pointed to Filaret from the western provinces; - among these arguments, the Chief Prosecutor pointed to some of his candidates, Bazhanov noted that this was useful: they laughed! - But, it seems, the matter remained unresolved.
At dinner he spoke about the disorganized course of affairs in the Synod. They report what they want - some nonsense. Reasoning about the class clergy: Metropolitan Isidore raised this issue, and not the Chief Prosecutor - God knows from what types. It could easily happen that this way the best will leave us, while the middle and lower ones will remain. The Synod decided whether it was impossible to ask that the children of priests be recognized as personal nobles, and those of the clergy as honorary citizens. But allowing everyone to leave the clergy, the Holy Synod does not want to accept them again and admit them to all the rights that they could enjoy if they served for a long time. This caused a subtle ironic remark that the members of the Holy Synod would become kinder.
In addition to the selection of the Bishop, they were also engaged in resolving the issue of diocesan schools, in favor of which there were five electoral and five non-elective shares. And yet they were not left to the decision of the Bishop, and the Chief Prosecutor insisted that new elections must be made. Another question: will a Jew be allowed to teach the Jewish language at the seminary; it has been decided: allowed if he is a Christian. We did little things like that.”

Ibid; The letter of February 6 is far from fully printed. Further it reads like this (2551).
“They said about the Chief Prosecutor that he left.
Nikolai Alexandrovich had a warm welcome. He promised to assist in church matters and secure a reward for Tolokonnikov, only next year. Conversation about the Academy's Charter, about comments sent from the Bishop, which were already read by the Chief Prosecutor. The choice of the rector by the Academy itself, it seems, will be cancelled. He spoke about the opinions submitted by Metropolitan. Arseniy, Makariy Ave. The first one is too harsh: he stands up for his power too much, I read a tirade from an opinion. The second project distributes theological sciences into three departments: dep. theoretical, dept. teacher, dept. practical, and besides them there are two more special faculties: philological, mathematical and some other. The plan is too complex. He proposes not to open all departments in all Academies, and if philology is opened in ours, then transfer it to Moscow. - About our review N. Al. expressed that it was written calmly, at least one can talk about its provisions. - He strongly called for my quarters, saying that it was good to call me to the Committee... - He praised the choice of the inspector in St. Petersburg.
Academies; - armed against the Moscow Seminary.
M. Arseny received him well, but it was very unpleasant to listen to questions about the Vladyka of Moscow. What, did he compose the Council? - What is Moscow’s attitude towards him? – Is Leonidas blessed? And when I said that he was with Vladyka, and that he had recently renounced the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, I noted, in order to wait for the metropolis. And at the same time he noticed that it was G. Governor of Moscow. behind the doors he worked for him after the death of Vladyka Philaret, so that he could be made a metropolitan. In all this, some kind of sarcastic spirit is expressed (4 syllables). He spoke about the Chief Prosecutor’s proposal to give Khomyakov’s book a go and about transferring it to Nektary for consideration. The Empress will not go to Crimea. And the Tsar promised to be in Kiev in July or August.”
Per country 2552 vm. “Went on a visit,” you should read: “went on a visit, happy in the sense that I didn’t find anyone at home.”...
Line. 7 St. pass: "Nick. Al. Not a word about participation in the Committee. In general, much boring."
The entry on February 8 ends with the following:
“Fr. Chrysanthus said that of those who completed the course two years ago, Kudryavtsev was rejected.” Vladyka is firmly in his thoughts to lure the Chief Prosecutor to his side.
Entry February 9, pp. 256 13; “I met with V.I. Askochensky, who recommended his brother-doctor against toothache.
Line 4 sn.: Palimpsestov, who was in charge of the pension section, “promised to resolve the issue of pensions (for the monks).

Strchk. 8 above, printed by P. I. Savvaitov. In the “Diary” it is written in parentheses (“clown”).
There is no end of record for this number; it is necessary, after the first paragraph, to add: “The speech touched on the consumption of meat food on fast days; Father Yanyshev admitted that he inevitably must think about the commandment of the church regarding meat food when visiting strangers in society.”
Strn. 2574. Before the point there is a gap: "After lunch, Chistovich told me about the fate of Kudryavtsev. He was probably not completely deprived of his master's degree, but was only left until an explanation with the Conference." “I spoke with the rector” ...
On page 258 18 omission before the period:
Strchk. 19 there are inscriptions on the codices: “mentioning Samgar, who converted the Khozar Kagan to Christianity in the 8th century,” about traveling to Kyiv at the invitation of Vladimir “Kagan” in 980, at the beginning of this year, to preach Judaism, etc. The signatures must be authentic. Firkovich, they say, is an honest man himself, but someone else could have served him.”

- “I went for the third time to St. Macarius; downstairs on the porch some monk told me that he had just arrived, upstairs another monk went with a report about me, but a minute later he came out again with the answer that the Reverend was sitting down to eat, now he couldn’t accept, please at 6 o’clock or tomorrow. Before the Synodal meeting I was extremely embarrassed by this surprise, and thus had to return with nothing... Without me...”
On page 259 1 missing after the period: “The count wrote to me in pencil: “We need to ask the consent of them and the Holy Synod. After thinking, I decided...”
Strchk. 4 svrh. After the dot there is also a skip:
“The matter remains with the Synod, whose consent, in Sergievsky’s opinion, cannot be difficult.”
The end of the letter is not given. Here it is:
"The rector of the Academy visited me with Popovitsky, the publisher of Modern Leaflets. At the beginning of 6 o'clock, Putyatin came to see me for the second time, from the Sergius Hermitage, and we went to dinner. I saw the whole family; the eldest son studied at Oxford, the eldest daughter knows Greek and is teaching her younger brother this language. Apparently his upbringing was generally strict. The count spoke about the letter to him from our priest from Japan, that he managed to convert three significant Japanese: one priest and two doctors. A Japanese man lives in the count’s own house, a young man studying at the gymnasium and preparing for baptism. “I spent the evening with Tertius Iv. The question was about the attitude towards the Greek church towards the Bulgarian one, which gave rise to the idea of an ecumenical Greek council.”
Page 259. Only the beginning of the entry on February 12 was printed. The continuation is as follows:
"The Count expressed from the very beginning that the Tsar is not pleased to turn the Academies into a university faculty, but he wants to preserve their independence. The reason is that a university cannot be strictly monitored from the moral side, and in the Academy attention should be paid to this side. But not being a university faculty, the Theological Academy should not take over the subjects of university education, it should be a theological higher school, develop theological sciences. Therefore, the mathematical sciences should not remain with us. Literature is superfluous. I will find teachers in mathematics for seminaries from the Ministry of Public Education. From the previous [word unintelligible] it happened that the seminaries have rotted and the Academies are rotting (I object: they have stated) the Academies in the mathematical sciences have not brought any fruit. - Literature is taught in the seminary - and that’s enough. not at all Academies.
For polemics with opponents of Revelation, physics alone is not enough. It is better not to enter into polemics with materialists. I myself, the count said, studied at the Lyceum and I can repeat with Pushkin: we all studied... little by little. The Yaroslavl Lyceum was like that; the mathematical sciences were so spread out that it was impossible to accommodate them all in the Academy. And the university divides the mathematics department into two departments. Finally, we do not have the money to open departments in Academies everywhere in sciences that are not directly theological, but excluding philosophy. Philosophy has long been in the spirit. seminaries are going well. If the Faculty of Mathematics is retained at the S.P.B. Academy, it is out of respect for the dignity of the mentors. But it's not fair. We must look not at faces, but at deeds. These are the objections the Count expressed regarding the general education sciences in the Academies. I objected. He became noticeably irritated, but towards the end he softened somewhat in his expressions. In conclusion he said: Rev. Macarius will oppose you, defend yourself against him as you know.
The count asked: how are things going with you at the Academy, under the new metropolitan? Does he pay attention to scientific affairs? He says that the Apostles are not scientists, but enlightened the universe. - I answered that he forces us to study, that he has such common sense to appreciate the benefits of science. But if he says that there may be priests who have not completed the course of study at the Seminary, then this applies only to certain selected persons and, moreover, only in relation to the rural clergy. - In the questions and in the very utterance of them, he spoke out against it. I asked about permission to build a church. The count was happy about this, said that permission from the Holy Synod was needed, and promised to reward the church builder.
The Count said that theological sciences in the Academies do not flourish because there are many sciences; I pointed to another reason - the extreme severity of monitoring Orthodoxy. By the way, I mentioned the count; Yes, we will ban everything now op. Khomyakov for some expressions.”
Page, 359 14 omitted after the period:
“He said, among other things, about unpleasant rumors regarding enlightenment started by our ruler’s ill-wishers.”
Strnc. 260 1 after this line there is a gap; - “I was with my master. He advised me to stick to my thoughts regarding the composition of the sciences in the Academy, and in case of emergency, to propose reducing the Academies, instead of four into three. - He quickly gave me his note “On Sunday conversations with children” to read, which he, along with others, decided to send now to the Chief Prosecutor. What will happen from this? May the Lord work everything out for good.”
Page 260 2. After the period there is a skip, and the end of the note is as follows:
"I myself heard the same complaints about the meetings of the Synod, about the restrictions on the part of the Educational Committee, about the work of translating the Bible, from our Bishop. He trustingly recounted the fuss on the occasion of the elections to the Nizhny Novgorod department, about Nektary's subservience to the count in the case of Khomyakov's book. Isidore, said St. Macarius, is rude to the metropolitan Moscow. Communications and so on sent him to the Synod. But the Right Reverend-Ivan Vasilyevich.-Pr. Macarius complained about Miropolsky: excellent in talents, but in which seminary; and one of the new mentors who came from our Academy, Miropolsky Peter was approaching him, following the inspector’s lecture on ascetic requirements, but his auditor spoke. praised."
Page 260 10: I am obliged to Tertius.
Strchk. 14 sc. After the skip point:
"The first question was about specialization; the majority of votes recognized it as necessary. Then attention was drawn to the project of specialization of sciences by St. Macarius... Since according to this project not all departments of science were held in all Academies, the question was proposed: does everyone agree to this? It turned out that only one vote was in favor of the project from Vasiliev. The Reverend was very amazed by this and soon left the meeting. His main idea was to specialize as many subjects as possible, i.e., to students studied as many sciences as possible, and in each of the special [word unintelligible] sciences they could receive degrees. M. Izmailich stands for mathematical sciences in the Academies. - He explained whether it was possible to organize three full Academies, instead of the fourth - an institute. But the institute does not give academic degrees.
Seeing that they were not being transferred to his side, he expressed that if he had known that they wanted to remain in the old state of affairs, he would not have gone to the meeting; that [for] such a charter, not altered in accordance with the opinion of specialization, we will be ashamed before the Protestants; that this evil can only assert stagnation. In conclusion, it is necessary to reconsider a special commission...”
Page 260th. End of entry February 14:
“The program of St. Macarius is more harmonious, but it was to be expected that they would not accept 1) because some sciences (philosophy, literature, civil history) according to it should be taught in two forms: briefly and extensively; 2) when applied to reality, each Academy should lose many of the current personalities, rejecting one or another branch.”
Page 260. Start of recording on February 15th:
"I was with the Vladyka. In my presence, one of the members of the mystical society read a libelous book published by this society for the Synod for the long case about the Vladimir Archimandrite, printed in 30,000 copies. On February 21, this society convenes all its members. But the well-meaning side (Vladyka and others) finds it safer not to go to the meeting, so that a scandal does not happen here. - After that he conveyed I am the Lord of information."
Page 2603. In the line, you need to add after the period: “He said that he is not restrained enough. He is not averse to making concessions in favor of expanding science in the Academy against the previous one with a larger amount of knowledge. He continues to speak with sadness about the Synod: there is nothing to be expected from it regarding the affairs of our scientists. What is laid down by the Committee will be approved.”
Page 261 9. After the break point: “Everyone read the Six Psalms, and this, the rector told me, was done for the sake of the visitor; the students surely learned that the rector of the Moscow Academy was here.”
In the same place, line 18: “A student served the all-night vigil with a Greek monk.”...
Page 262. End of entry February 17:
"The project presented to us, with the exception of Rev. Nektary and Chistovich, was recognized as more suitable than the Committee's. But Rev. Nektary stopped the final judgment on it until the next meeting, on Friday."
Entry February 18, 1869 Tuesday.
"I was with the Bishop. I found you. Alexander. Vasiliev, the former secretary of the Moscow Society, with a newly printed batch of [word readable] reports of the society for 1867, which contained various articles against [unintelligible words] the clergy and the synod. This report is supposed to be read in the meeting at 21 o'clock.
The Vladyka did not accept it in embarrassment. Let, he says, the Synod defend itself. - At 12 noon I was at Vasiliev’s, but did not find him at home. - In the evening at the all-night vigil, in the courtyard, and after the service at the Bishop’s. Here I read his note to the Empress about taking measures to prevent the meeting.

Ibid., end of entry February 22:
- "They said that the Chief Prosecutor told Arseny the Metropolitan about me, that he said that the power even for the Bishop is too great. This was expressed by Vladyka Arseny on February 14, at the Cyril and Methodius prayer service."
To page 2653. You need to read: The Chief Prosecutor asked that instead of A.V. Gorsky, “either Viktor Dmitrievich or Sergei Konch accompany him when attending lectures.”

In owned Moscow. Spirit. Academician The literary heritage of Archpriest Alexander Vasilyevich Gorsky contains a pack of sheets of notepaper of different formats and several quarter-sized notebooks, known as the “Diary of A.V. Gorsky.” These are unrelated reflections on various subjects, mainly from the area of internal life, draft letters, autobiographical notes, notes on household affairs and academic circumstances; uniting these fugitive pages with one common heading is very It’s difficult, and only based on the personal sketches that predominate among them, one can, rather inaccurately, call this entire stack of papers a “Diary.” It was under this title that Alexander Vasilyevich’s notes were published by his successor as rector, Archpriest Sergei Konstantinovich Smirnov, in the 34th and 35th kiigs “Additions to the publication of the works of the holy fathers” in Russian translation” for 1884 and 1885. At the same time, Sergei Konstantinovich dated some sheets that did not have dates. - Sergei Konstantinovich’s edition has shortcomings.
Some passages were not considered interesting enough by the publisher to print; in other cases it was necessary to make omissions due to censorship conditions. Namely, K.P. Pobedonostsev, who personally reviewed the text proposed for publication (as can be seen from the letters of Sergei Konstantinovich and the letters of K.P. Pobedonostsev to him, placed in this book “Bog. V.”, as well as from the letters printed in the anniversary collection “At the Trinity at the Academy” M., 1914, pp. 631–632, letters 8th and 9th), did not find it convenient to publish at that time some parts of the Diary. As a result of this purification of the Diary, not only entire passages were excluded, but, in addition, in many places individual phrases and words were omitted or changed. To correct the above shortcomings, at the request of the editors of “B.V.” the printed text of the “Diary” was checked word for word, under the general supervision of the editor, with the manuscript by priest A. M. Belorukov. The result of this reconciliation, by the way, which is very difficult due to the illegibility of the manuscript, is what is being printed today. Ed.
