Psalm - attracting angelic help; a weapon against powerful fear, calm from the day's labors, safety for babies, decoration for the elderly, comfort for the elderly, the most decent decoration for women. He inhabits the deserts, brings chastity to the people's assemblies; He is the initial training for newcomers, growth for those who are successful, confirmation for those who are perfect, the voice of the Church. He makes the holidays bright; it produces sorrow for God. The psalm also brings tears from a heart of stone. Psalm is the work of Angels, heavenly residence, spiritual censer. Psalm - enlightenment of souls, sanctification of bodies. In it, brethren, let us never cease to study, both in our homes and on our way: and when we go to bed and when we rise from sleep, we will converse with ourselves “in psalms and songs and spiritual songs” (Eph. 5:19). The psalm is the joy of God-lovers; it drives away idle talk, stops laughter, reminds of judgment, arouses the soul to God, and joins the angels. Where there is a psalm of contrition, there is God with the Angels. And where the songs of the alien are, there is the wrath of God and grief for laughter. Where there are sacred books and readings, there is the joy of the righteous and the salvation of the listeners. And where there are harps and lyres, there is a darkening of husbands and wives and a holiday of the devil. Oh, what an evil cunning, what an invention of the devil! How skillfully he entices and seduces everyone and convinces them to do evil as if they were good. Today, apparently, they sing psalms, and in the morning they enthusiastically indulge in dancing; today - Christians, and in the morning - pagans; today they bear a glorious name, and in the morning - Hellenes; today they are servants of Christ, and in the morning they are apostates from God. Do not be deceived: no servant “can work for two masters,” as it is written (Matthew 6:24). “You cannot work for God” and dance with the devil. As true servants of Christ, let us work for Christ; Let us worship Him, we will not retreat from Him, we will remain with Him until our last breath, and we will not obey the serpent; because “like a lion he roars and goes about seeking someone to devour,” someone to deceive. “Resist the firmament” (1 Peter 5:8-9), as Christ’s soldiers, working for Christ and remaining with Him. Don’t do it in such a way as to sing psalms today and dance the next morning! today to repent of your sins, and in the morning to ride to your destruction; read today, and pipe the next morning (play the pipe); Today, observe abstinence, and the next morning you will spin around, and be a laughing stock for everyone. No, brethren, let us not thus waste the time of our salvation by playing and serving others as a plaything. Like a good farmer, cultivate and protect your fields. Don’t be burdened, brother, with the path to eternal life, don’t reject dry eating, don’t move away from vigil, don’t consider reclining on the bare ground as nothing, don’t give up psalmody. For all this and the like sends you into eternal life, and joy, and gladness, and peace. Love silence during bad conversation; everyday conversations separate the mind from God.
