Exaltation (Elevation) of the Precious Cross

Беседа против иудеев, говоренная в неделю: Осанна

You, beloved, have been called to a great holiday, bring the gift of praise to the Wise One who called you. You, valiant ones, have come to the victory supper; as courageous warriors, take your banner in your hands. Now you have entered a harbor rich in all sorts of blessings, rich in essential internal treasures; make a spiritual purchase. You, swimmers, have reached a quiet pier; enter with joy into this safe country in which there are no storms. The Son of the Kings, who has come to our country, calls you to a joyful holiday; go out to meet Him with olive branches and sing: “Hosanna” (Matthew 21:9). The Lord of festivals and times has invited you to this holiday, the Lord of months and years has called you to this day. You taught us what to sing to You on the holiday dedicated to You; You have instructed us what to proclaim to You on the day of remembrance of our salvation. Let the Angels rejoice with us, and let their trumpets thunder; let the nations rejoice with us, and let the tongues cry out: “Hosanna!” On this joyful holiday, may our sorrows disappear before You, and may our defilements be atone for the good deeds that You have done for us. May our souls rest in You, forgetting about their sorrows; in You may the worn-out, aged and decayed creatures be renewed. In You may our virtues find strength and be established in their ways; By You, Lord of spiritual adornments, may our Churches be adorned. By You, Creator of our human race, may our souls be purified, and may our generations be blessed. Sanctify our conscience, make it pure from evil, build up our destroyed walls, protect them from enemies. Decorate the church of our composition (spirit) so that we may come into primeval beauty. Let the heavens, the heavens, the earth, and all that is on them praise You, O Lord. May creatures glorify You, O Lord, with the splendor of their structure, and may all the winds praise You with the wondrous breeze of their breaths. Let all heavenly things proclaim the praise of Your eternal being; let those on high rejoice at Your descent, let the depths rejoice (celebrate, triumph) and glorify You. Let the sea rejoice at Your walking, and the dry land at Your processions; Let our nature rejoice and praise You, because Your greatness dwells in it. Let my weak spirit glorify You with reasonable words. Let the assembly of prophets rejoice in the praise of children. Let the host of the apostles rejoice with diverse voices of all kinds. May heaven and all the faces of the spirits rejoice now. Let each one in his own way glorify Him Who bowed His height and descended. Now let the highest (heavenly) waters praise You, crying out: Hosanna! Now let the waters of the valley bring the gift of praise to Your glorious and great name. Let the firmament now rejoice, let it glorify the Eternal, Who bowed the heavens and came down to earth to dwell with earthly beings. May the sun rejoice now, may His rays become even more enlightened, glorifying the great Sun, which illuminates the worlds and creatures. May the moon shine now, showing off the majestic radiance of the stars, and in its heavenly abode worshiping the Exalted One, who has deigned to descend to the valley. May all the stars in their splendor now bring the gift of praise to the Creator who adorned them. Now rejoice the earth, “leape up the mountains like lambs” (Ps. 113:4), before the Son of the King, Who humbled Himself and came to visit those below. Now rejoice, sea, rejoice, islands of the sea, in the Lord, who from His dwelling place came into the poor abode of our humanity. Let the oak groves and the branches on their trees rejoice now, for the fronds (palm branches) have been cut from them and serve as a wonderful sign. Let the four-legged ones rejoice now, let the beasts of burden rejoice, because the Heavenly One has come to our country and sat on the foal of a donkey. Most of all (most of all) now let the city of David rejoice and be clothed with joy, because the Lord of all creation has turned His face to it and is entering into it. Let the cities rejoice now, let the villages move, crying out in song with the children, exclaiming: “Blessed is he who comes!” (Matthew 21:9). The grapes of the Beloved are now completely devastated and transplanted to the pagans, they trample them with ridicule, they have turned into a reproach and are ruined. His stronghold was destroyed and fell, his high pillar was destroyed by the voice of exclamations, just as Jericho fell by the sound of trumpets. Now the vines, which are outdated and damaged, have been renewed. In their place a vine grown among the pagans was planted. The beasts of the field devastated (ravaged) this great barren vineyard, because it bore not ripe grapes, but sour berries. And the Lord of the vineyard was angry and burned the summer shoots (annual shoots) of it with fire, commanded the clouds not to give rain in their time, so that the vineyard would dry up and be deserted, there would be no fruits or greenery in it. The rain of the prophets and the spiritual dew of the seers became so scarce that the fountain of Jacob dried up and the stream of Israel dried up. Two anointed vines were cut in the garden of Abraham: the kingdom and priesthood were taken away from Israel. He who weaves crowns has now broken the crown of Judah; the Lord has removed from the midst of His people a ruler and a venerable man, a wise man and an adviser, a prophet and a leader. The synagogue, lover of festivals, now sits in lamentation. Since she despised the feast of the Son, He also despised and rejected her feasts. The glory of the people of Israel has now been taken away; He is put to shame among the pagans, like Cain for his crime. There are now many cracks in Jacob's house, because the Builder, who built its walls, has destroyed and destroyed its corners. The synagogue among the pagans will now sing such a song: “For the Lord has brought upon me great lamentation” (Bar. 4:9), the Lord has left me alone, the Lord has removed me from His inheritance, He has recognized me as a widow alien to Him, who is abandoned. May our host now rejoice with the sweet-sounding songs of the prophets, may the summer of praise vegetate (grow) in it, may it bloom like lilies. Let us now gather fruits from the garden of the prophets and spiritually enjoy the sweetness of their growths. Raise your hands, pagans, on this spiritual holiday, sing: “Hosanna!” - To the One who crowns your celebrations. Jacob will come (Gen. 49:11) and tell you about the “donkey’s stallion” and about the “vineyard” (grapevine). “Babes and sucklings” (those sucking) will be prompted by David to praise (Ps. 8:3). Zechariah will exclaim to Jerusalem: rejoice and “rejoice... daughter of Zion” (Zechariah 9:9). Isaiah also foreshadowed to us, pointing to the disciples: “Behold, on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news of righteousness” (Is. 52:7). His entry into Zion with loud exclamations (Matthew 21:9): “Hosanna!” - is a pre-image of joy, full of secrets and hidden meaning. Children hurry before Him with branches in their hands; "Hosanna!" - pure, innocent babies sing to Him; the face (assembly) of the apostles surrounds Him in joy. He is accompanied by holiness, royal majesty and priesthood, the prophets on their trumpets proclaim their mysteries before Him. As gifts to the king, they bring praises to Him at the meeting and inscribe (depict) His image in different ways. One says: “This is the One about whom I spoke that at the end he would come to earth” (Hab. 3:2). Another says: “I saw Him standing on the stairs” (Gen. 28:13). One says: “This is the same one whom I saw among the bushes in the form of a flame” (Ex. 3:2); another repeats: “This is God... Wonderful, Ruler... of the ages" (Is. 9:6). One says: “This is He who, with a noise, with great thunder and the sound of a trumpet, came down to the top of the mountain, where I saw Him” (Ex. 19:19). Another calls out and says: “Praise your God, O Zion; take the flute and harp and sing your song to Him” (Ps. 147:1). One says: “This is the Remnant gathered in Israel” (Is. 10:20); another proclaims: “He is the desire of tongues” (Gen. 49:10). One says: “Here is a stem, Which vegetates and grows without a seed; the other continues and speaks; “This is the rod of the root of Jesse” (Is. 11:1). One says: “This is the sign that will be raised up by the people of the earth” (Is. 5:26); another likened Him to “a lamb before the shearers” (Isa. 53:7). One says: “Isn’t this the One whose face the nations are waiting to see?” Another exclaims: “It is the Lord who comes down and walks on the strongholds of the mountains” (Isa. 2:2). One lists His great deeds and the wonders of His deeds, saying: “Behold, He who looses the bound, heals the brokenhearted” (Is. 61:1). Another asks about His name; He asks what He wants to call the One who contains the winds in His handful: “What is His name?” - and: “What is the name of His Son?” ( Proverbs 30:4 ). One says: “He is like a root growing “in a thirsty land” (Is. 53:2); another calls out and says: “His name abides before the sun” (Ps. 71:17). One says: “This is the Child (Child), whose birth took place today (Ps. 2:7); another: “He is ancient, more ancient than all creatures” (Mic. 5:2). One says: “I saw a man standing on a high fence” (Amos 7:7); another says: “I called Him Angel, in whose hand is the gospel of the Father” (Mal. 2:1). One asks: “Will God truly dwell with men?” (2 Chronicles 6:18). Another says: “This” is the Lord, “our God” (Bar.3:36). One says to Jerusalem: “Arise, “shine... for your Light has come”” (Is. 60:1); another cries out: “Rejoice greatly, daughters of Zion,” triumph and “preach,” O Jerusalem” (Zechariah 9:9). One says: “This is the East” (Zechariah 6:12); another calls Him a “star” (Isa. 10:17). One calls Him a rod (Isa. 11:1); the other is the Shepherd of Israel. One says that He is a King, and the other that He is a leader and adviser. One calls Him a lamb, and another calls Him a burnt offering. One says: “This is the “Stone” that was cut off “without hands”” (Dan.2:34); another calls Him “Prince of peace” and righteousness (Isa. 9:6). One says: “This is He whom I saw ascending into the clouds” (Is. 19:1); another says: “I saw Him sitting on a chariot of Cherubim” (Ezek. 10:18). One says: “I saw the Lord sitting on high on the throne, and the fringes of His robe filled the holy church” (Is. 6:1). Others wisely draw other mysteriously hidden images. One says: “I heard from the Father how He spoke: “Come, and let us go down and confuse the tongue” (Gen. 11:7); the other proclaims and says: “It is spoken to you, Nebuchadnezzar” (Dan.4:28). One says: “It is entrusted to me to go and preach about creation, which the Lord spoke to His Only Begotten: “Let us make man in our image” (Gen. 1:26). One depicts His descent (descent) as softly dripping rain, and also represents Mary as a beautiful, pure “fleece” (Ps. 72:6). Another prescribes his conception and depicts his birth (Is. 7:14). Another foretells His way, saying: “make righteous the paths of our God” (Is. 40:3). With such broadcasts they glorified Him when He entered Jerusalem, and the face of the prophets glorified His entry into Zion. Children and prophets joined the disciples there to introduce the King with triumph and honor, and cried out: “Hosanna!” The pagan Church greeted Him with desire and worshiped Him, the King of kings, but the harlot, the vile synagogue, was angry with Him. She did not receive Him with joy, although the prophets had foretold Him, and she saw His greatness and shuddered at the Most High, Who came to her. I saw His holiness and trembled, because I was indecent on the streets. She foolishly neglected Him, because he was humiliated according to the flesh, and she despised the glory of His being, hidden in His Divinity. The son of Jesse, David, foretold that His glory was hidden; “in the brightness of the saints” (Ps. 109:3) from the bowels of the eternally Existing One was born the One who sat on the naked ridge of a donkey’s foal. Hiddenly, the Father begot Him in the beginning in His essence, and He was revealed as one of us at the beginning of years and times. “The Lord swears and will not repent” about His beloved Son; “You are a spiritual Priest... according to the order of Melchizedek” (Ps. 109:4). This exact image of Him according to His humanity was drawn by David in His songs and clearly depicted Him, for He imagined His humanity, in which He clothed Himself at His coming, and in which the priesthood and the everlasting Kingdom were assigned to the eternal High Priest. “You are a Priest forever... the power” Your “power is eternal”, and Your “Kingdom” is “for generations and generations” (Ps. 104:4. Dan. 4:31). With such excellent colors, having dissolved them with the intimacy of the Divine, David paints the image of the King of glory before the eyes of the daughter of Jerusalem. The prophets called to her: “Hear... and see, and incline Your ear” to the praise of the children, and “forget” your wickedness and the wickedness of your people, and the stubbornness of “Thy Father’s house.” And the King will desire Your kindness, will desire Your glory” (Ps. 44:11-12). She did not respect the voice of the prophets and the preaching of the apostles, this adulteress (guilty of the sin of adultery) did not “incline her ear” to the praise of children and infants. And since she did not listen and did not rejoice in joy and glorification, He wrote a letter of divorce and gave it to this despised and defiled woman, and removed the veil from her head and modesty from her eyes. He took off her jewelry, pulled her off and took away her clothes. He took off the decorations from her neck, took off her necklaces and chains. Like a harlot and an adulterer, He cast him away from Himself, drove him out of His palace, and behold, she sits without a veil, her head naked and disgraced. Thus he spoke to them in His fury and with His wrath, “Crush them, and fill their faces with dishonor” (Ps. 82:16-17). Inflamed with rage against Jerusalem and turned it into a desert. Pointing to this, the prophet Isaiah cries out: “Like a tabernacle of vineyards,” and like an abandoned hut the Lord will leave Jerusalem (Is. 1:8) for its wickedness. And if the Lord of hosts had not left a small remnant (remnant) for the assembly (society) of the house of Israel in the vegetated rod of Jesse, “as Sodom were like Boshes, and Gomorrah were like Boshes” (Is. 1:9). But now he imagines that he will be restored. This people, who have angered God with their deeds and deeds, awaits and desires the time in which they will receive satisfaction. This foolish man reads the prophets and does not understand their words. As soon as he hears about the restoration, he lifts up his voice and cries: “Jerusalem will rejoice again” (Is. 49:17). He hears this again and again, because he wants it, but why Jerusalem was destroyed - the Jewish tribe does not know. “Great will be His glory” (Hag.2:10) - he repeats incessantly, but he does not know how this will happen; imagines that his name will be glorious (Is. 66:22), but through whom he will become famous, he does not know. He says that it will be called “a city delivered” (Zeph. 3:1), but whoever delivers it does not understand it. He adds in foolishness and says that Jerusalem will become famous and glorious (Is. 56:6), but through whom and how - he does not say this, because he has lost his mind, “his heart is clothed”, Israel “hears” with difficulty “with his ears” (Is. 6:10), and does not understand everything that is written. At the entrance of our Savior, the prophetic face cried out with a loud voice: “This is the One about whom we spoke, who would come and sit on the lot of a donkey. Arise, go out to meet Him, exclaiming: “Hosanna!” And striking the tympanums, rejoice and rejoice!” But the foolish people soon heard the cry of praise: “Hosanna!” - he was indignant, became confused and forced the children to be silent, because the voice of the apostles and children merged together. And the Old Testament agreed and joyfully praised the Savior, the prophetic face praised Him in the face of the children, and the apostolic face in its own person. Thus, the prophecies of the prophets and apostles were fulfilled about Christ, and together they praise the Lord as the Creator of both the prophets and the apostles. The Jews not only rejected both Testaments, but they scolded the Father and, out of hatred, killed the Son. The Prophet calls on the entire assembly of the house of Israel to glorify Him, but they are preparing for murder, hastening to commit an atrocity. “The heavens will tell the glory of God” (Ps. 18:2), but the synagogue does not agree to this; the earth marvels at His condescension, but the Jew does not pay attention to it. All the mysteries have been fulfilled, but the Jew claims that they have not yet been fulfilled. What was supposed to happen happened, but he denies that it even began. The transformations that were prescribed by the seers were carried out and carried out by our Savior, but the stubborn and stiff-necked people swear and claim the opposite. Nothing new has happened yet; all secrets are kept before the time, as you say. How long will it take you to manage, foolish ones? Come, let us examine, as we should, the prophetic sayings, let us see whether the mysteries predicted by the prophets have been fulfilled? Jacob blessed Judah, telling him this: “The scepter and the interpreter of the law will not be taken away from you, until the Shepherd, Whose Kingdom belongs, will not be taken from you, because He will deliver them from error” (Gen. 49:10). He will bind “His lot to the vine and His donkey’s stallion to the vine” (Gen. 49:11). Let the rebellious Jew delve into this and gain wisdom. If Judas has the scepter and the interpreter of the law “from his loins,” then what is written has not yet been fulfilled, and it has not yet been accomplished. And if the scepter is taken away, and the prophet is rendered speechless, then be ashamed, O people of Judah, for persisting to this day. If He had not mounted “on a young stallion,” as Zechariah prophesied (Zechariah 9:9), if the infants had not praised Him, as David said (Ps. 8:3), if He had not taken the kingdom from Ephraim, as was prophesied, if He had not talked with the pagans (and exactly as it was written about this), then they might not have believed on earth that He is eternal Tsar. If He did all this, fulfilled the mysteries and legends, then be ashamed again, O Jew, how soon you hear from God: “You are not My people, and I am not your God” (Hos. 1:9). The people of God have been replaced by pagans, those close to us have been replaced by those who are far away. “I will crush you into tongues,” the Lord said to Israel (Jer. 9:16). I sold you “without a price” (Ps. 43:13) and I will not exchange you again (I will not take you back), because you mixed with the pagans and learned their deeds (Ps. 105:35). Behold, I reject him and call the pagans to Myself, in Zion I lay the chosen “Stone of stumbling” (Is. 8:14), “and he who believes in Him will not be put to shame,” says the Lord (Is. 28:16). And another prophet says that he saw the Lord sitting “on an adamantine fence, and the adamantine was in His hand.” And the Lord clearly said to the prophet in revelation: “Behold, I will make adamant among My people Israel” (Am. 7: 7–8). And David had already said before how He would carry out all the transformations (previously destined): “The stone that those who carelessly built, this will become the cornerstone” (Ps. 117:22). Know, O Jew, that the Lord has built a fence around Jerusalem, erected its strong walls, and blessed its children with peace. The Lord remembered His mercy and, according to His great bounties, accepted him. As a mother consoles her son so that he forgets his sorrow, so the Lord consoled Jerusalem, saying to her: “Because of My wrath I have struck you,” but with eternal bounties I will receive you (Is. 60:10). For the shame of your desolation and for the reproach when I was angry with you, I will exalt your head among the pagans and magnify your glory and your honor. Since they called you an unfaithful city, full of filth, I will shed My precious blood in you and take away your iniquities and sins. And since you have lost Israel, whom I rejected from My presence (Jer. 7:15), I will open your gates with joy, and “the power of tongues” will enter into you (Is. 60:11). And they will become in you a chosen people, the Lord will reign over Zion, numerous nations will come and “praise” Me “in Jerusalem” (Jer. 4:2). “And like a land that produces fruit, and like a heap that grows its seed, so the Lord will make righteousness increase... in the sight of all nations” (Is. 61:11). On this day the nations will say: behold, “God... is our Savior” (Is. 12:2), “behold... the Lord comes with might” (Is. 40:10). He will deliver us from sorrow. “And they will call you by a new name, by which the Lord calls you” (Is. 62:2). “Zion,” weeping bitterly, “said” then: “Lord forsake me,” because I angered Him, “God forgot me” and rejected me (Is. 49:14). “Will a mother forget” her nursing child, “hedgehog” (so that) “she will not have mercy on the offspring” (son) of her “womb”, not caress and hug the beloved fruit that is born of her? (Isa.49:15). “Even if the wife forgets everything,” “but I will not forget you” forever. “Behold, in My hands are written” your high “walls,” Jerusalem (Is. 49:15–16). Your unrighteousness is now forgiven; through your humility you will soon be exalted. “Behold, I have prepared for you anfrax” (ruby) “your stone and a sapphire for your foundation. And I will lay your jasper" (jasper), "and your gates of crystal stone, and your fence of chosen stones" (Is. 54:11-12). I will fill your midst, Jerusalem, with riches, treasures and jewels, jaspers (jasper), pearls, crystals and virills (beryls). I will fill your dwellings with agates and your palaces with the finest gold, and “all your sons” and your daughters will be “taught of God” (Is. 54:13). Peace will increase in your palaces and righteousness on your heaps. In the presence of many nations I will sanctify you and dwell in you. “And the people will go by your light, and the nations by your brightness” (Is. 60: 3). I have given you for My glory among the nations and for My glorification among the nations (Isa.63:7). Behold, I am expanding My tabernacle in you, I am setting up My pots (wells) in your midst. I will spread and enlarge your knots (branches), I will spread My coverings in you (Is. 54:2). “My dwelling will be among you, and I will give My sanctification,” and “I will be” you “God forever” (Ezek. 37:27). “I will dwell here as I please, and I will bless his trap... and I will make the horn of David grow,” and My salvation will not depart from it (Ps. 132:14-17). Because Jerusalem was thrown into confusion by the crying of the infants, the Church will gather the infants, and they will praise Me with their words: “Hosanna!” And since she has called the infants to praise Me in her hundred squares, I will call upon her the power of the pagans, and they will sing to Me: “Hosanna!” Jerusalem and her children will exclaim: “Blessed is he who comes!” Woe and down: “Hosanna” to the Son of the Most High Father. Blessed is He who descended, out of His love, to save the human race! Blessed is the King, who became poor to make the poor rich! Blessed is he who comes to fulfill the predictions and transformations of the prophets! Blessed is He who rejoices creatures with the wealth and treasures of His Parent! Blessed is He to whom even the silent beings sang a song of praise: “Hosanna!” Blessed is He to whom the children gave new praise in song! Blessed is the new King, Who has come and is glorified by new children! Blessed is He Whom the babies praised with their babbling among the disciples! Who will not marvel at Your love, O Lord, which prompted You to such condescension? The chariot of the Cherubim is ready to reverently bear Your glory. And the wretched lot bore Your great and holy power, which in His mercy descended to us to magnify us with His peace. Let my lips tell Your truth on this joyful day; May my tongue proclaim Your glory on this feast of blessings! May my soul rejoice on this holiday, on which the creatures rejoiced; let my spirit carry forth a branch of praise, exclaiming: “Hosanna! Hosanna!" - the children exclaimed to You, walking ahead of the colt on which Your Majesty sat. And we, together with the children, will exclaim to You: “Hosanna to the son of David!” The baby, with a babbling tongue, like one who speaks well, offered praise, exclaiming: “Hosanna!” The prophets never praised Him like that. The children who glorified the Son amazed the elders who saw the Son and did not glorify Him. Let my thoughts praise You, Lord, but not like foolish children; I will rather praise You, like the host of disciples who saw Your power, and I will rejoice in You, like the children who raised their voices in heartfelt joy. On this day our Lord entered Jerusalem, the royal city, and humbled Himself, sitting on the lot in order to exalt human baseness. In the high country He left the Seraphim, who most gloriously glorified Him and the Father, and received praise from the children and infants of Jerusalem. Now our Lord has entered Zion and sat on the lot. This was foreshadowed by Zechariah: “Behold, your King is coming to you, righteous and... meek and always on... the young stallion” (Zechariah 9:9), and the children cry out to Him: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Blessed is the one who comes! Praise be to Him and to the Father who sent Him! Before His greatness, the Cherubim cry out: “Blessed is the Lord from His place” (Ezek. 3:12), and the children with olive branches glorify Him, exclaiming: “Hosanna!” Now the Creator of all worlds has humbled Himself, He has left the mountainous country of the Cherubim and has sat down on a wretched lot. Blessed be the Lord of the prophets, who came and fulfilled their words! And the children together with the disciples praised Him, seeing His humility. The children, who had not yet learned the human word, sang praises from their mother’s bowels when they saw Him seated on the lot. He sat on the lot and entered Jerusalem, but Jerusalem thirsted for blood, saw Him and envied Him recklessly, for it saw that He was humble and unadorned. Blessed is the King, Who humbled Himself and sat down on a wretched lot! But Zion, seeing His humility, laughed at Him and did not accept Him. The seraphim are in fear of His greatness and do not dare to look, and the children and disciples sing a song of praise to Him: “Hosanna!” The cherubim tremble before His greatness and carry His chariot, but the disciples prepared a wretched lot for Him, and He sat on it. It is worthy of wonder how the Son of the Kings humbled Himself among earthly creatures and, instead of a fiery chariot, sat on a lot. The fiery ones tremble before Him, sitting on the exalted throne of the Father, and the infants sing to Him with love: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” The daughters of Israel glorified King David with timbrels, and the children praised the Son of David, exclaiming: “Hosanna!” They spread their clothes before the foal of the King of kings, who abandoned horses and chariots and chose for Himself a despised horse. And this fulfilled the word of Zechariah, who prophesied to the daughter of Zion: “Behold, your King is coming... always upon... the lot”, the son of a donkey. King David played with the ark before God, and before the foal of the Son of David, children with branches in their hands sang praises. Michal mocked (mocked) David (2 Samuel 6:4-16), and the foolish elders laughed at the children, and the stiff-necked began to cry out in order to silence the voices of praise and exclamations of the host of disciples who glorified the coming of the King of kings, who made Himself of no reputation and sat down on a wretched lot. The King of kings entered His city amid hymns of praise appropriate to Him, and the rejected synagogue asked: “Who is this?” and what do they say about Him? (Matthew 21:10). She saw hosts of those glorifying him with green palm branches in their hands, and she was stung by reckless envy; she wanted to force the children to be silent. The Lord of all creation entered Zion in humility, but this serpent, the friend of adulterers, did not arise from his sleep. Blessed is He who left the arrogant synagogue that did not accept Him under trampling, and He who chose the Holy Church for Himself! And praise will be written to Him with the exclamation: “Hosanna!” Come, the face of the prophets, the heralds of what has now been fulfilled, see: the King has not deviated from the path that you paved for Him! Arise David, look to Him, the Son of David; look how you foretold about Him: babies and even pissing (brothers) sing to Him: “Hosanna!” The praise that the elders and Pharisees distorted, the innocent children borrowed from the teachers of truth, has been renewed. Arise, look at your disciples, at the beautiful face of the children, they exclaim in simplicity: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” The elders refused the triumph with which they were supposed to greet the King, and the innocent, immaculate children shouted to Him: “Hosanna!” Why are you sleeping, son of Jesse, arise today, rejoice with us, bring your horse with you, sing to the Holy Church. “Forget your people and your father’s house. And the King will desire your kindness” (Ps. 44:11–12). Because the Jewish daughter despised Him, the pagan daughter accepted Him. How pleasant is your song to me and sweet the sounds of your horse! She even taught innocent babies to sing songs of praise. David hurried to Zion, the sounds of his horse were heard, children joined him, and he taught them to sing the sacred song. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Ps. 117:26), David proclaimed in his song. And after him the blameless ones sang: “Blessed is he who comes!” Arise also, Zechariah, prophet and praiser, because your prophecy has been fulfilled: behold, He has sat on the lot, as you said, and on the son of a donkey, as you foretold. Shout to the harlot that if she wants, she should go out to meet the Bridegroom, and if she does not want, then let her send children who will sing to Him: “Hosanna!” Rejoice and “rejoice greatly, daughter of Jerusalem,” for your King is coming to you; Praise Him, “Daughters of Zion,” for your King sits on the foal of a donkey. He consumes “horses from Ephraim and chariots from Israel” (Zechariah 9:9–10) and preaches salvation and peace to all nations who believe in Him. Arise, Elder Jacob, and praise; He sealed the secrets of your blessings, tied “His lot to the vine and His donkey’s stallion to the vineyard” (Gen. 49:11). Arise, Holy Church, greet, glorify the Bridegroom with exclamations: “Hosanna!” With babes and sucklings, sing praises among the pagans on this festive day of our Savior, who came and delivered you from error!
