Soon God showed them a sign of His wrath, for He did not bless their wicked bed, He did not create an ordinary human fetus from them, but He allowed, as a sign of His wrath, for an unusual generation to arise from them. The children born to them were like some kind of monster, ugly in appearance; and when they reached the age of their husband, they became not similar in age to ordinary people, but exceeded this measure of age, becoming like some kind of oak trees. “I went in,” says the Scripture, “the sons of God to the daughters of men, and these begat unto themselves, and these were giants” (Gen. 6:4), that is, giants, “olbrims,” “velets,” who, as they say, by their age reached eighteen, twenty and even more cubits (about 0.5 meters) (Kedrin; Cornelius; Berosus and Adrichom). By their nature, as those born in lawlessness, they were the worst of all lawless people, murderers and rapists; they were ardent, fierce, lovers of war and bloodshed, proud and power-hungry; throughout the land they pursued people, raping them, robbing them and killing them. How unrestrained and lawless they were for carnal lust, there is no way to write about this, since this is unbearable for a chaste ear. The same Chaldean historian tells that the giants ate human flesh. The people they killed were food for them. At a time when the sons of God, holy people, abandoning their holiness, began to uncontrollably fall into sins, mixing with sinful people. The sin of a person who falls away from the holy into lawlessness is greater and more serious than the sin of a sinner, for it angers God more strongly and entails execution. The sinful Cain sinned, and the unrighteous Lamech also sinned, one by murder, and the other by bigamy, but they did not rebel God for vengeance, like the sons of Seth, who were saints, who, having sinned, brought upon themselves a special punishment: the unblessing of their bed, which gave birth to monsters and monsters, and the global flood. The sins of holy people are not like the sins of ordinary people, but like the sins of giants: evil, great and terrible; evil, because they dishonor a person; great, because they tempt many; terrible, for “woe to him, from worthless temptation comes,” says the Holy Gospel (Matthew 18:7; Luke 17:1).
