Saint Pansophius was the son of the Alexandrian proconsul of 611 Nile. Possessing great wealth, Nilus spared no expense in educating his son, and Saint Pansophius, with his excellent abilities, received a thorough knowledge of Christian truths along with a broad secular education. After the death of his father, the saint used his wealth to help those in need, after which he withdrew into the desert, rejecting worldly thoughts in order to seek the Lord. He lived for twenty-seven years in solitude, raising his mind from earthly things to the contemplation of the Heavenly Kingdom and remaining in unceasing prayer to God. The fame of the virtuous life of the holy hermit reached the prefect of Alexandria 612, who was under the emperor Decius, a persecutor of Christians. Appearing before the prefect's court, Saint Pansophius exposed the falsity of pagan teachings with the stories of the pagans themselves about their gods, with evidence full of truth, preached that Christ is God, and thereby disgraced the arrogance of the tormentor.
