Saint Alvian was captured while a certain pagan priest named Agripinus was making sacrifices to idols. They began to force the saint to sacrifice to idols and throw his palm on the altar, but he responded with dignity: “I praise faith in Christ, but I reproach the service of idols.” For this, they first burned his stomach and legs with hot iron rods, and then began to beat him with sticks without any mercy. With such torture, the tormentors wanted to force the saint to renounce Christ and offer sacrifice to idols, but neither he himself nor his disciple, who was subject to torture with him, agreed to this. After this, he was condemned to be burned, for which they made a hot furnace and threw him and his disciple into it, where the holy martyrs died 2973. The holy martyr Alvian was a bishop in the city of Anea, located in the Roman province of Asia Minor. Here, of course, Maximian Galerius, co-ruler of Diocletian, who ruled the eastern part of the Roman Empire from 305. Asia was a small swampy plain in Lydia, abundant in water, i.e. the middle of the western part of the current Asia Minor peninsula, on the eastern shore of the Aegean Sea. It contained the seven cities of Asia Minor mentioned in the Apocalypse (Rev. 1:11), and for some time it was the place of activity of St. Apostle John the Theologian.
