The confessor of Christ, Venerable George, lived during the time of iconoclasm. Having loved Christ from his youth, he took monastic vows and, thanks to his pious life and many labors and deeds, became the abode and receptacle of the Holy Spirit. He was appointed bishop of Antioch of Pisidia in 2645 and in this rank he diligently led the flock entrusted to his leadership. When, at the inspiration of the devil, the iconoclastic heresy intensified and, at the invitation of the emperor, all the bishops hurried to gather in Constantinople, then this saint, having come there, courageously stood for Orthodoxy and advised the king to obey the conciliar church decrees handed down to us by the holy fathers, mentors of Orthodoxy, and exhorted us to imitate their faith, “with various teachings and strangers” (Heb. 13:9) not to be seduced, according to the commandment of the Holy Apostle Paul. He himself was forced to renounce the worship of holy icons, but he did not obey the wicked iconoclasts, for which he was removed from the bishopric and exiled to prison, where he ended his life 2646. Pisidia is a region of Asia Minor. The death of Saint George followed the reign of the iconoclast emperor Leo (5th) the Armenian (813–820). You might be interested in:
