The holy martyr Ardalion suffered during the reign of Emperor Maximian in 2553. Being a mimic actor, he represented the suffering and various actions of people at folk spectacles and other places. It happened one day that he imagined the torment of Christians as they actually happened. They hanged him and began to plan his body as if because he did not want to sacrifice to idols. When shouts of approval and praise for his art were heard among those present at this spectacle, he turned to the spectators and in a loud voice ordered them to be silent and wait to express their approval, and then, when everyone was silent, he openly admitted that he was in fact a Christian. The ruler of the city, who was at the spectacle, praised his art for a long time, wanting to force him to change his decision. But the saint refused to do this and decided to remain in the true faith. Then the ruler ordered an iron frying pan to be heated and Saint Ardalion to be thrown onto it. And so the holy martyr died. Here we must understand Maximian Galerius, who first co-reigned with Diocletian, and then from 305 to 311 with his successor. The persecution of Christians under the edict of Diocletian began in 303.
