The Venerable Martyr Zosimas was from Cilicia 250 and labored in the desert. By order of the wicked Diocletian 251 he was taken and given over to torture for the faith of Christ. They burned his ears with a hot iron, threw him into a cauldron filled with sewage, hung him upside down by his feet and subjected him to various tortures. But miraculously the saint was delivered from death. During his torment, a lion came from the desert and spoke with a human voice. At the sight of this miracle, everyone was seized with horror, and Zosima was released. Commentary 252 Athanasius, seeing him unharmed after cruel torment, believed in Christ and was baptized. Zosima withdrew with Athanasius into the desert, and there, amidst feats of prayer, in the cleft of one mountain, both of them peacefully gave up their souls to the Lord. Cilicia is the southeastern region of Asia Minor near the Mediterranean Sea. Diocletian was a Roman emperor who reigned from 284–305.
