This word is simple and uncomplicated - not because it has the purpose of telling about simple matters and little worthy of attention, but because it is intended not to show any unnecessary and cunning wisdom, but to extract from the depths of the stellar deception those indecently immersed in it. But do not be surprised at the severity of the preface, for I am possessed by strong inner pain, not only because you, being incurably ill, do not care about what you should and have no intention of becoming sober in your mind, but also because you uncontrollably corrupt the right paths of the Lord and are constantly trying to cast the gentle multitude of the faithful into the same abyss of delights, as those who are not content with your own misfortune. Yes, you yourself do not know that you will face trouble from the Lord, as the perpetrators of temptations. For the Lord clearly says: If anyone causes one of these little ones to stumble who believe in Me, he will not eat, so that a millstone of the ass may come crashing down on his neck, and he will drown in the depths of the sea (Matthew 18:6). If such a terrible misfortune awaits the one who seduces one believer in the Lord, then what should we think about those who seduce not one or two, but the whole Church, gathered and abiding in goodness in the Lord, attempting to corrupt and separate from the apostolic and paternal teaching? With your Latin harmful teachings, which you invent from your womb, you are not afraid to corrupt the bright apostolic and faithful wisdom of the fathers; sometimes, using the tricks of Balaam and demonic fortune-telling by the stars, you exhort ordinary people to turn to you and believe your fortune-telling about what should happen in everyone’s life. But, having made a sufficient preface, it is timely to turn the word to the assumed understanding, which may teach you not to philosophize in your own way. And if our word successfully hits the target, then – glory to God, who directs it to its intended goal; if it does not reach your intention and does not touch your thought, then even then - glory to God, who moved us to your correction, although you rejected the goal, due to your extreme disposition to contradict. If you, O people, have any faith in Christ and are waiting for the resurrection of the dead and the coming from heaven of the righteous Judge, before Whom all people who have been since the beginning of time will appear, and everyone will give an answer for what they have done, even to an idle word, as the Judge announced, then why have you neglected and far rejected His holy promises and the immutable words spoken to the righteous Noah, and followed the star-divining deceptions and the Chaldean demonic teachings, do you preach about the change and transformation that is coming from Aquarius of everything that exists and of all rational and irrational creatures moving on the earth, which has not happened since the beginning of the world and which has not been heard of in the ancient chronicles? And you hold on to these beliefs so tightly that it is easier to take you away from breathing this air than to take you away from these observations. In saying this, I do not simply reproach the knowledge of celestial bodies, which is necessary and suitable for real life, such as the knowledge of the rotation, rising and disappearance and flow of other stars, according to which the times of this century are accurately calculated and the so-called Easter is correctly contained; It is not this knowledge that I reproach, but the excessive enthusiasm for this science and the excessive testing of what is known to the only God; also a cunning distraction of believers from God by exhorting them to pay attention to the positions of the stars, whereby some of them are recognized as beneficial, and others as evil, and from this they conclude not only about days and hours, but also talk idle talk about people, recognizing some as good and others as evil. This I condemn, recognize and call wickedness, following in this case all the blessed men who have shone forth in piety since the ages. And you all, preachers, followers and warmest defenders of all this, serve as the closest proof that I do not lie, to which you and those around you serve as irrefutable witnesses. You recognized the immutable promise and covenant of the Creator, which He gave to the righteous Noah, as if false, but you believed the fortune-telling of the evil “Almanac”, and without shame you preach that soon throughout the entire universe there will be a flood more formidable than all that have previously occurred since the beginning of time. And since this prediction turned out to be false and you were put to shame, you now claim that fortune telling did not predict a flood of water, but a change and reorganization of everything that exists on earth. However, the Almanac clearly states that this must be accomplished through water, and that the other stars must gather towards Aquarius and effect this transformation in the universe; You recognize Aquarius as the harbinger and creator of waters and rains. But it’s time to apply to you the word of blessed Paul, which he writes to the Galatians (Gal.3:1): O foolish Latins! Who deceived you not to obey the truth? Nowadays, what made you step back from the truth and watch the days, months, seasons and years? But I see that what the apostle warned the Colossians has happened to you, and you are deceived by external philosophy and vain flattery, according to human tradition, according to the elements of this world, and not according to Christ (Col. 2:8). And no wonder. For Aristotle has every meaning for you, who enticed you, or rather, drowned you with overpathetic syllogisms and cunning, not allowing you to conveniently agree with what the prophets and apostles said mysteriously about the Most High Trinity. And if a dogma does not correspond to its intricate syllogisms, then you either recognize it as unsuitable, or, without any fear, remake it for the sake of peripatetic cunning. If it weren’t for the fear that the length of the word on this subject will burden your attention, then I would show you this from the very deeds - I would show how, based on what you were guided by, you completely spoiled most of the mysteries revered by Christians - some were completely spoiled, while others were remade to please yourself, perverting the entire paternal rule. But do not think that for this reason I condemn external teaching, which is useful and is approved by almost all who have shone in piety. I am not such an ungrateful student of this teaching, although I have not yet been on the threshold of it, but I condemn the excessive inquisitiveness of the mind. For they should have piously followed this teaching and assimilated with their minds only that which contributes to the establishment of the Christian faith and, as the divine Paul says, captive every mind to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5), and in everything force science to follow the gospel truth, considering it a slave to this truth. They do the opposite - they devoted themselves entirely to science, breaking away from the truth, and throughout their lives they follow Aristotle and Plato and other Hellenic philosophers; They feed on them and breathe entirely from them. What kind of perversion of dogmas comes from this and what evilness is usually born from this in the concepts of students of science - no word can depict this. I myself am a reliable witness to all this, and not as someone who heard it, but as a first-hand witness of it in Italy and Lombardy and as a former accomplice of them. And if the Lord, who cares about the salvation of all, had not had mercy on me, and had not soon visited me with His grace and illuminated my thought with His light, then long ago I would have perished along with the representatives of wickedness who were there. Oh, how many people I recognized in Italy, suffering from pagan wickedness, who violated our greatest sacraments! Of these, a certain Cobezmik of Ferrara, who surpassed others in outward learning, when he was dying, said to his disciples and friends: “Rejoice with me, beloved, tomorrow I will rest in the Champs Elysees with Socrates and Plato and with all the heroes!" So he was seduced by pagan teaching! There was another after him in Patavia, the Neapolitan philosopher Sesa, who so hated our faith and its rituals, that when I went to church, I said to my friends: “Let us also go to the general deception.” Who does not know the Angel Polizian, who was in Florence, who became famous for all wickedness and uncleanness and died in a pitiful manner? There were others in other places, filled with all kinds of wickedness, who would have truly erected churches to idols long ago, if the fear of excommunication by the pope had not held them back. But we should return to where we left the word and show that you are not only deceived by Aristotle and other external teachings and distracted from Christian truth, but that the very thing you say in your own defense is very worthy of laughter. For, daring to do this, you present your pope everywhere as divine, assigning to him the power given to the Supreme Apostle Peter, and with them, as if some kind of monster, you never cease to frighten ordinary people, thinking incorrectly in this case, as in others. For the power given to the chief apostle, that is, if anything is allowed or bound on earth, then so it will be in heaven (allowed or bound), was also given to the other disciples. The power given to the Supreme Apostle is not to change the Gospel of Christ, that is, the law and theology both about Him and about the Most High Trinity, but to forgive the sins of the repentant and paternally arrange their salvation, regardless of the severity of the rules laid down, and, depending on the dispensation of the repentant, to shorten or extend the time of repentance. And in order not to dare to change even the slightest thing contained in the Gospel, the Lord commanded about this, saying: Whoever destroys the oneness of these little commandments of Mine, etc. (Matthew 5:19). Well, didn’t the power given to the supreme one also apply to the former Roman saints, such as Sylvester, Celestine, Leo, Agapit, Agathon, Hadrian and many others? It is clear to everyone that she did. Which of them ever dared to change anything from the divine Orthodox dogmas and church rules and customs, until the Seventh Ecumenical Council? Were they not all in agreement with the eastern luminaries, being united with each other by the union of love for the Holy Spirit, and thus fairly governed the Churches of the faithful located everywhere? Wasn’t there everywhere the same confession of the Orthodox faith, containing the teaching of the Comforter as coming from the one Father? Wasn't the same baptism performed, that is, through three immersions, as the apostolic rule commands? Wasn't it just prosphora containing salt and acid that was offered in a bloodless sacrifice, and not unleavened bread? And this is clear from many testimonies, especially the wondrous saints Basil the Great and the divine John Chrysostom, who left writings about this to their Churches. Of these, the divine Basil, fighting against the heretic Apollinaris, who argued that the Son of God took on flesh alien to the mind and soul, and for this reason established for his followers to sacrifice unleavened bread, since salt serves as an image of the human mind, according to what was said in the Gospel: have salt in you, and kvass denotes the soul that animates the body; fighting against the said blasphemy of Apollinarius, the divine Basil in his writings taught the holy conciliar Church the following rule: “If anyone sacrifices unleavened bread, let him be anathema!” The Divine Chrysostom expressed the truth to us in this way, speaking in his word about the Cross: “The ancient one,” he says, “was past, behold, it was all new; there is the ark, here is the Virgin; there is a rod, there is a Cross; there is unleavened bread, here is bread.” So did the truth shine through both of these teachers? What can you say against this? Having said: in the ancient covenant there is unleavened bread, he contrasted bread with them, and thereby testified that it belongs to the New Testament sacrifice. If you contrast to us what was said by blessed Paul to the Corinthians: Cleanse away the old leaven, that you may be a new mixture (1 Cor. 5:7), and again to them: Therefore let us celebrate, not in the leaven of old, nor in the leaven of malice and wickedness, but in the absence of leaven of purity and truth (v. 8), - in response to this we will tell you not something of our own, but that heard from the same father and ecumenical teacher John Chrysostom, who, by divine revelation, interpreted the messages of blessed Paul, as is known from the history of him. He says this: “Blessed Paul, having previously reproached them for keeping silent about the fact that they allowed themselves to cohabit with their stepmother and left such iniquity without due attention, advises them to henceforth retreat from the old evil with which they lived before, that is, from bestial and vile pagan cohabitation, which he allegorically called old kvass, according to what the Lord said to the apostles: take heed to yourself from the brew of the Pharisees, that is, from their godless teaching and lawless life. He commands them to live, calling it a celebration, in the absence of leaven of purity and truth, that is, according to the customs and morals of the saints and pure, as befits Christians to live.” Do you see how this divine father understands the apostolic saying? At the same time, he did not mention at all about the bread offered in the sacred service, as you misinterpret. Who will you command us to obey more: Basil and Chrysostom, who shone in ancient times in all holiness and divine wisdom, and all the other ancient saints, or you, who have transgressed what they legitimized and are drawing us to the Apollinarian heresy? You cannot say that unleavened bread is an apostolic institution. It's yours. And your justification for this is clearly demonstrated by what Saints Basil and Chrysostom said. But what has been said here about this is sufficient for those who prudently submit to Orthodox church tradition; for the word should not be spread to one who strives for his own intention. The intention of this word is to expose your godless and false opinion about the flood, which you very boldly formed, speaking from your belly (that is, from your carnal wisdom). By what prophetic or apostolic predictions, O people, did you spread such blasphemous wisdom throughout the universe? Where did you conceive and give birth to this vile offspring, worthy of the darkness of the Trophonium caves? Don’t you know, O people, if you hold on to Christianity at all, that you should not think or write anything beyond what is written and handed down to us by the prophets and apostles and the teachers who came after them, if you want the right to philosophize in the area of ​​faith? Maybe you will say: who legitimized this? – Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, in the Holy Gospel, where, denouncing the Sadducees for the incorrectness of their wisdom about the resurrection, he said to them: You are deceived, not knowing the Scriptures (Matthew 22:29). Don’t these words clearly contain the law not to dare to philosophize more than what is written? He seemed to say this: “You are being deceived because you do not obey the Holy Scripture, which you must follow in everything and learn the truth from it.” Isn’t this the same thing that should be said to you Latins: you are deceived, not knowing the Scriptures or the power of God? If you believed what the Creator of all and Ruler of all said to the righteous Noah, that there will never again be a flood of water on the earth so as to destroy all flesh (Gen. 9:11-17), and that it is impossible to lie to God (Heb. 6:18), and that heaven and earth will pass by, but My words will not pass by (Matt. 24:35); - if you knew all this and believed it, you would not have reached such madness. What do you have to say against this? If you are convinced of what has been said, then stand with us in the truth. Or do you need stronger medications? But we will do this with God’s help. It seems to us that those who adhere to such madness suffer from one of two things: either they do not believe that the Creator provides for His creatures, and in this case they are atheists; or they believe that He provides, but not for everyone, but only for His heavenly creatures, while He has left the earthly ones under the control of the zodiacs and planets and what they call happiness. But even in this case, they will not escape condemnation for atheism, for atheism is equally contained in both. If the Creator provides for His creatures and cares for them so much that without His will not even a bird will fall into the net and the number of our hairs is not unknown to Him, as the Lord said in the Gospel, then how will it be possible for the zodiacs and planets to bring such destruction to God’s creations, when God maintains them and preserves them with His creative hand? If you, being embarrassed by the truth, resort to astrological art and say that astrological science teaches us to think and reason this way, and it is in no way possible for it to be otherwise, then we will again simply tell you this: the incomprehensible providence of God, which wisely manages everything, arranges and maintains everything, is not subject to the influence of the stars and the movement of the planets, but owns it all and controls it as it wants. He wants in every possible way for all this to be righteously and prudently managed by His incomprehensible and wise providence, and not so that by the violent influence of the stars and zodiacs everything is done senselessly and disorderly, as you blaspheme, suggesting some kind of inevitable force of the planets and zodiacs deceiving you. If they had such a power as you dream of, and if everything was controlled not by some divine righteous wave, but by their strength and movement such destruction would be induced, as you say, then all this would have perished long ago, being raped by the irresistible influence of the stars. If, having been admonished by us, you say that all this should happen by divine inspiration, then give us evidence of where you got this from, from what prophecies, from what writings of the apostles or church teachers. Who, after Moses the seer of God, foretold that there would be a secondary flood on earth? Tell me if you have (such a prophecy). But you cannot indicate, even if you have worked endlessly. Do you want me to prove in another way the wickedness of those who write and understand this? Just don’t be embarrassed, for there is still hope of salvation left for you. If you want to swear that some have clearly been deceived in that they are philosophizing outside the Holy Scriptures, then this word has sufficiently exposed their deception. What should we say to them about the fact that they bring at the end of their demonic fortune-telling, saying: “Raise up your heads, O Christian men”? Or do you think that with such grandeur you are addressing some ignoramuses, alien to meaning? What else do they express with this short speech, if not that, having once clung to this insignificant wisdom of this age, they excommunicated themselves from the society of Christians and, out of their great madness, condemned the Holy Scriptures? Therefore, they arrogantly preach their wickedness and with great pride they abuse us, the pious, commanding us to lift up our heads, that is, our minds, and just don’t say: “Oh, crazy Christians! You, who are deceived by the Mosaic Scripture, do not expect the second flood before the universal end! Realize, if you can, that you have been deceived, and recover from this delight!” – Are you clearly mocking us when you say this? Isn’t it some other godless pagan council, perhaps the Chaldean, that you clearly profess to be accomplices of, which is why you call us Christians? For whoever adheres to concepts that are contrary to Christians and excommunicates himself from their name, obviously follows a different path. Was it not with the same arrogance that the Pharisees reproached the enlightened blind man, saying to him at their meeting: You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples (John 9:28)? We are so far from being offended by this that we thank you for calling us Christians, and we raise our heads, that is, our minds to the mountains, that is, to the heights of the mind of the Holy Scriptures and, from there, drawing abundant enlightenment, we sing with blessed David: The transgressors have told us mockery, but not like your law, O Lord (Ps. 119:85). And again: Curse those who turn away from Your commandments (Ps. 119:21). Who are these lawless people, if not those who, through the evil “Almanac,” say that from the convergence of the planets and zodiacs with Aquarius, a transformation and change will occur that was not there from the beginning? Those who say this neglect the holy promises of God given to the righteous Noah, in which the humane-loving Master not once, but repeatedly affirmed the righteous man with words expressing great paternal care, special care and immutability of the promise. Let the holy words of the Lord of all be brought here to the righteous Noah, in order to show to the human race the great care and providence of God for the rest of creation, and that He punishes and has mercy with a righteous measure, and that by His divine command everything is contained and prudently and decently managed, and not by the senseless and disorderly action of the zodiacs and planets. But before we quote what God said to Noah, let us pay attention to the fact that, according to the testimony of Divine Scripture, the Lord of all righteously inflicts executions on people for three special reasons: either for increased fornication and uncleanness, or for wickedness and disobedience to Him, or for breaking His commandments. And the proof of the first reason is Noah’s contemporaries, also Sodom and Gomorrah. The second is Pharaoh and all of Egypt, who fell into extreme wickedness and did not submit to the Lord of all, despite the countless miracles that Moses performed before them. The third is the people of Israel, who, after gaining possession of the Promised Land, for breaking the commandments of the Lord, were first oppressed a thousand times by foreigners, and subsequently taken into captivity by the Babylonians. I’m not talking about this simply and not in vain, but to show the falsity of the Almanac’s prediction about the flood, and that its idle talk is not only wicked, as it shamelessly contradicts the Lord of all - God and His saint Moses, but is completely full of meaninglessness and madness, for it does not represent any of the above reasons, for which, as a rule, the Lord of all punishes lawbreakers, as said, but gives only one reason, this is an unreasonable confluence of planets and zodiacs. From this it is clear that he is suffering from extreme wickedness, as one who ascribes the control of all creation to a soulless and insensible thing, and not to God, who, in the words of the Apostle, bears all things by His power. But it’s time for us to pay attention to what was promised above, to more positively expose the idle talk of the “Almanac” and show that it is false and blasphemous. That the Creator and Preserver of everything provides for and cares for our salvation, and that it is not without reason that He brings executions upon us, is clear from other countless sayings of Scripture and cases; especially from the story of Holy Scripture about the flood that happened under Noah. It is written about this like this: But the earth was corrupted before God, and the earth was filled with unrighteousness (Gen. 6:11). These words contain an accusation of our depravity and a justification of the righteous judgment of God - that He does not inflict punishment without reason, but providentially and together fatherly cares about our conversion when we irrevocably move away from Him. Then, showing the Lord’s love for mankind and that He greatly cares about our salvation, he says: And the Lord God saw the earth, and it was not corrupted: for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth (Gen. 6:12). This saying - vide - signifies the inexpressible love of the Master for us, for whom we love, we insatiably enjoy the vision of them, so that nothing can tear our eyes away from them. Then he says: The Lord God spoke to Noah: The time of every man has come before Me, for the land is filled with wickedness from them: and behold, I will destroy them and an unworthy land (Gen. 6:13). The philanthropic Lord was pleased to judge the creation of His hands in order to show that He does not rejoice over the destruction of people, but that they themselves were the authors of their destruction. The time, he says, has come, that is, the time has come for vengeance and fair trial. For a long time, he says, I have tolerated their iniquities; Having said: the earth is filled with unrighteousness from them, He expressed by this the reason why He condemned to destroy them. It is not I, he says, who is to blame for their destruction, but they themselves, with their iniquities, provoked My long-suffering to anger. Then he reveals to the righteous the method of their destruction, saying: And behold, I will bring a flood and water on the earth to destroy all flesh (Gen. 6:17). Why is it added here: behold, Az? It would be enough to say: and I will bring a flood. Let us not think that this is simply or excessively said. Since at that time the deception of stargazing was in great use, which originated from Seth, as the Jewish historian Joseph writes, and since many of the people of that time, like those of today, held incorrect concepts, attributing everything to the zodiacs, the movement of the planets and happiness, the humane-loving Lord fatherly and for admonition added this expression: Behold, Az, as if to say: do not listen, people, to false teachings speaking from their belly. It is not Aquarius who will let water flow to the earth by bringing other zodiacs and stars closer to him, but I, he says, My wave, My advice and My command will open the abyss of heaven from above, and the springs of the abyss from below (Gen. 7:11), and thus all flesh will perish. And that such destruction will no longer be brought about, this was clearly taught by the Holy Scripture, which represents the Creator saying this: The Lord God spoke, having thought: I will not curse anyone on the earth for the deeds of man: it is not fitting for a man to think diligently about evil from his youth; For I will not cause anyone to destroy all living flesh, as I have created (Gen. 8:21). What could be more trustworthy and truer than these short words? The Creator Himself talks with Himself, as if confirming us and making us trustworthy, so that in the future we would not be afraid and would not expect anything like that. He also gives a reason for this: beforehand, he says, a person’s mind is diligently evil from youth, and it is impossible for them, as carnal ones, to free themselves from carnal desires and lusts, for which I would have to often destroy them from the earth. This is not characteristic of My goodness, and therefore it is necessary to deal with them with long-suffering and quietness and other punishments. For this, the humane Master and Lord, more affirming us, repeats the same word, saying: I will not cause anyone to destroy all living flesh as I have created. This would be enough to fully confirm that we should no longer expect a flood for the entire universe, if our word were extended to prudent people. And as this word refers to the Latins, who, more than any other people, are blinded by pagan seduction and the Chaldean demonic teaching, then let us consider the rest of the prophetic and sacred words with which the humane-loving Lord affirms the righteous Noah, and through him the entire human race, to no longer fear such destruction forever. The words of the Holy Scripture are as follows: Behold, I have established My covenant with you, and with your seed after you, and with every soul that lives with you (Gen. 9:9-10). Then, repeating, he says the same word: And I will establish My covenant with you: and all flesh shall not die by the water of the flood, nor shall there be a flood of water to destroy the whole earth (Gen. 9:11). What could be clearer or more reliable than these words? See, blind, and deaf, hear, if you can, and understand, O foolish ones, Who is saying this! Having understood, be horrified at the face of the Lord of Hosts, the Creator of everything, Who creates and transforms everything as He wants, by the word of His power. He promises us that we should not be afraid of anything like that, but you shamelessly say that there will be a flood according to the action of the stars. Who said this and who approved it? Do you not hear Isaiah, who speaks clearly: This is the counsel which the Lord hath counseled upon the whole world, and this hand upon all the tongues of the world. For God the Holy One deliberates, who will ruin? and who can turn away His lofty hand? ( Isa. 14:26–27 ). Have you understood from these sacred words the firmness and immutability of the promise of the Almighty God and His truth, or do you still adhere to your beloved disobedience and passion for argument, or rather, unbelief? If you believed the Holy Scripture and carefully directed your ears to it, you would not fall into such abysses of blasphemy. But, so that, citing all the prophecies, of which there are quite a lot, we do not continue the word immeasurably, let’s say a little more and finish with this. For anyone who has received prophecies in their hands should understand for themselves the warning contained in them. So we, O people, by the grace of Christ, being from the beginning Christians, brought up in the apostolic and paternal teaching and tradition, and piously and invariably preserving what was established and sealed by them - as we have learned, as we have believed and as we maintain and confess together with them, so we write and preach to you, without saying anything of our own and without inventing anything ourselves, as, apparently, you dare. But by borrowing evidence from the Holy Scriptures and explaining this with the interpretations of the holy fathers, we ourselves are edified by this, accepting the light of reason, and we give enlightenment to those who ask for it with faith. We ask you, put aside all contradiction and all arrogance that comes from the external false-named mind in those who, out of inattention, become attached to it - and accept this triumph with faith, and with blessed David always say to the Lord of all with humility: I was beastly with You, and I will go out with You (Ps. 72:22). What is he saying? I have understood, he says, O Master, that the treasure of Your destinies is an incomprehensible and unthinkable abyss of Your divine mind; I am a worm, not a man, and therefore I am content with what I received from the mentors who preceded me, and I limit myself to this and do not experience anything else, for I know the weakness of my thoughts. Therefore, I consider it fair to accept Your holy commandments, commandments, destinies and teachings so simply and without testing, just as a bullock accepts the burden placed on it by its master, and goes and follows where its master directs it. I apply this to myself, so that I can always be with You, without being separated from Your divine grace. For it is impossible, it is impossible, O people, for anyone to enter into the kingdom of heaven promised to us, as was written many times before in my first epistle, unless one accepts it as a child, that is, if one does not simply and without testing accept the divine teaching that has been revealed to us about the Most High Trinity, and that has been handed down and confirmed by the God-bearing fathers who have gathered seven times, whether it be interpretations, or customs, or rules. For they did not speak from themselves, but the Holy Spirit spoke through them, Who proceeds from the Father, as the Lord explained, expounding the teaching about Him, and Who is not alien to the Son in the sense of essence, as the Great Cyril and the whole face of the saints teach.
