There are different kinds of torment, as we heard in the Gospel. There is pitch darkness 1 (Matthew 8:12), and from this it is clear that there is another darkness - the deepest; fiery Gehenna (Matthew 5:22) – another place of torment; gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42) is also a special place; the never-ending worm (see Mark 9:48) - in another place; lake of fire (Rev. 19:20) - again a different place; tartar is also its place; unquenchable fire (see Mark 9:48) is a special country; Sheol (Phil.2:10) and destruction (Matt.7:13) are in their places; the underworld of the earth (Eph.4:9) is again another place; hell, where sinners reside, and the bottom of hell is the most painful place. The unfortunate ones will be divided into these torments, each according to the measure of his sins - either more serious or more tolerable, according to what is written: He is kept in the bonds of his sin (Proverbs 5:22). The same means what was said: The bits will be many and the bits will be fewer (Luke 12:47-48). Just as there are differences in punishments here, so in the next century. Those who live in enmity among themselves, if they happen to be transferred from the body in such a state, at the hour of Judgment they will find themselves inexorable condemnation and, like the hated, they will be sent into total fire and endless darkness, because they neglected the easy commandment of the Lord, which reads: Love one another (John 15:17) - and forgive up to seventy times seven (Matthew 18:22) Whoever has sinned and forgotten his sin and in such a state is transferred from the body - the wrath of God will fall on him, which Manasseh announced, saying: The wrath of Your rebuke on sinners is intolerable (2 Chronicles 36, Prayer of Manasseh). Woe to the fornicator! Woe to the drunkard! Woe to those who have tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts; but they do not look at the works of the Lord (Is. 5:12) and do not remember His words! Woe to those who mock the Divine Scriptures! Woe to those who waste the time of repentance and conversion (to God) in distraction and laughter! They will seek the time they were waiting for, and will not find it. Woe to those who question the spirits of flattery and listen to the teachings of demons, because in the next century they will be condemned along with the demons! Woe to those who write lies! Woe to those who are devoted to sorcery, fortune-telling, corruption of children and deeds like this! Woe to those who take wages from a mercenary, because whoever takes wages is the same as shedding blood! Woe to those who judge unjustly, who justify the guilty for gifts and deprive the just of the lawful (Is. 5:23)! Woe to those who desecrate the holy faith with heresies and agree with heretics! Woe to those who suffer from unhealed passion, that is, envy and hatred! But why talk a lot and not stop the words soon? Woe to all who, on that terrible day (of Judgment), will be destined to stand on their feet 3! For they will be covered with darkness and will weep bitterly when they hear the sad sentence: Depart from Me, you cursed (Matthew 25:41). Others will also hear the mournful sentence: Let sinners go to hell (Ps. 9:18). Others will hear: Truly I say to you, I do not know you (Matthew 25:12); Depart from me, all workers of iniquity (Luke 13:27). And others, namely the envious, will hear: Take what is yours and go (Matthew 20:14). Where should we go? - It is obvious that the same place where those who heard will go: Depart from Me, you cursed, into eternal fire (Matthew 25:41). Others will hear: Bind his hands and feet...throw him into outer darkness (Matthew 22:13). Others, like tares, will be bound to be burned in the fiery furnace (see Matt. 13:42). As there are many ways of salvation, there are so many abodes in the Kingdom of Heaven; and just as there are many types of sin and sinful deeds, there are also many types of torment. Our path is short, our march is short. One day from the mother's womb to the grave, one night of rest in the tomb, one morning of resurrection, then - the eternal Judgment. All but the perfect will be clothed there with spiritual contrition. The wicked will grieve because they did not think about the end; sinners because they did not seek salvation in repentance; those who loved the truth will grieve if they did not remain constant, and those who repented if they did not correct themselves in time. When they see the crowns of the victors there, then thousands of them will remember their lives, they will recognize the fullness of bliss of those who labor and are burdened, they will know how excellent their life was, how good and merciful the Lord is to those who honor Him. The evil ones will fall and descend into hell, Gehenna will swallow them up forever, then they will wish that neither their mother’s womb nor the grave would give birth to them. Both would be bearable, but in Gehenna it would be painful. The words “killing the body” (Matthew 10:28) are spoken about temporary death. After all, if the body really perished, then it would not be in Gehenna, because Gehenna torments living bodies, and kills undecayed bodies. In Russian translation: outer darkness.
