The largest part of this second half of the volume is occupied by our ecclesiastical archeology of the pre-Mongol period. Speeches about anything in archeology, and especially speeches about architecture (in our case, the architecture of churches) can be completely understandable only with the help of drawings (in our case, plans and facades). We ourselves understood this very well, and supplying the book with the most complete and possibly satisfactory archaeological atlas would be our ardent dream; but, unfortunately, this is such an impossible dream, the implementation of which it would be in vain for us to think in any serious way...
In our book we devote too much space to church architecture, so that some readers may be left in considerable bewilderment. We had special motives for this. The question of church architecture is as much a scientific-historical question as it is a practical one; and yet in our country, not only for generally educated people, but even for those in whose hands is the management of the construction of churches (through the drawing up of plans and their approval), this question is almost a complete terra incognita. In scientific and practical terms, we wanted to bring some clarity of ideas into the dark area.
