What I call incomprehensible is not that God exists, but that He is. For our preaching is not in vain, our faith is not in vain; and this is not what we teach about. Do not turn our sincerity into a reason for godlessness and slander, do not exalt yourself over us, who confess to ignorance! There is a very big difference between being sure of the existence of something and knowing what it is. There is God - the creative and meaningful cause of everything; in this are our teachers - both vision 34 and natural law - vision turned to the visible, which is beautifully established and completes its path, or, I will say this, motionlessly moves and rushes; natural law, from the visible and well-organized, inferring the beginning of its leader. For how could the Universe be formed and stand if it were not for God who brought about and contained everything? Whoever sees a beautifully finished harp, its excellent structure and arrangement, or hears the harp itself being played, imagines nothing else other than the one who made the harp or who plays it, and goes back to him in thought, although perhaps he does not know him personally. Likewise, the creative power that moves and preserves what has been created is clear to us, although it is not comprehended by thought. And he is extremely foolish who, following natural instructions, does not ascend to this knowledge by himself (1). You might be interested in:
