On the fiftieth day after His [Jesus Christ] Resurrection, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of tongues of fire on all the apostles, then gathered in one house (see Acts 2:1-4). Strengthened by Him, they spread throughout the whole world and abolished idolatry, demonic delusion, preached the coming of the Son of God into the world, suffering, death and Resurrection and taught everyone as Christ taught them themselves, and the Holy Spirit living in them then instructed. The Holy Church maintains this teaching to this day and is saved by this instruction. The sweet fruits of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering, goodness, mercy, faith, meekness, self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). We must try and pray to God to give us these fruits by the grace of His Holy Spirit. It is human business to speak, reprove, exhort; but God’s is to act in the hearts, for the preached Word of God is like an instrument through which the Holy Spirit acts in the hearts of those who hear it. Christ, who ascended into heaven, sent from His Father the Heavenly Holy Spirit on the apostles and on all flesh, as He promised: I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive (John 14:16-17). But He Himself promised to remain inseparably with the faithful until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20), for, having loved His own in the world, He loved them to the end (John 13:1).
