Note, Christian, what the lust for power does. Herod, fearing to lose his royal honor, rushes towards the innocent, newly born King of the Jews, Jesus, and for this he kills so many thousands of innocent babies. Oh, what a terrible and great evil is the love of power! The power-hungry and lawless king was not afraid to shed so much innocent blood! For what? So as not to lose honor. We see this evil in the world today. Lust for power is not afraid to raise the sword against monarchs, to stain their purples with blood, and to otherwise kill God’s anointed, and to cause great disorder and confusion in society. The king has as many enemies as there are power-hungry hearts surrounding him, although they caress him. A lover of power and a lover of glory is at one with the devil, for the devil always seeks glory and worship from people. Lust for power is a great evil in man and the beginning of all evil. It is not afraid to touch kings, to overthrow or kill them from their thrones. We see here that the lawless Herod was not afraid to kill so many thousands of innocent babies, just so as not to lose royal power. Oh, great evil - lust for power! A poor man seeks to control others, but cannot control himself. Flee from this evil, so as not to destroy yourself and others. You must first learn to control yourself and then take power over others.
