Don’t make a promise that you won’t get married, but live without a promise and take care of yourself with the grace of God, for many promise but don’t keep it. No one can force you into marriage, God gave it to us at will. Marriage is a Sacrament through which male and female persons are combined by mutual consent of both and by the blessing of the priest. Question: What is the matter or thing of marriage? Answer: Male and female. IN . What is the form or accomplishment? ABOUT . The consent of both to enter into a marital union with each other and to maintain love between themselves, so as not to leave each other for the rest of their lives. IN . What should be observed in this Sacrament? 1. Those wishing to enter into marriage must prepare themselves with pious deeds, confess their sins and partake of the Divine Mysteries three or four days before the wedding. 2. They must have the right intention to marry not out of passion and not for the sake of carnal pleasure, but so that the human race may multiply to the glory of God, for the blessed birth and pleasing upbringing of their children. 3. There should be no obstacle, such as, for example, kinship between them, carnal or spiritual; also prohibited times such as fasting; or forcing unwanted children into marriage by parents, and so on. When a priest wants to solemnize a marriage in his parish, he must see whether the couple is marrying for the first or second time. Is there any relationship between the marriages, the indicated years and other things that are depicted in the Helmsman’s Book about the secret of marriage in the 51st chapter, to which this list is attached. When they marry for the second or third time, both are widowed or not both, and whether they have been widowed for a long time, both or one... So in other matters, make a diligent test to see if there is any obstacle to the marriage, and if even the slightest doubt appears, do not marry, but demand advice from our consistory, presenting a written explanation about this. The following sins will follow from lawless marriages: when the husband is married to a living wife, and the wife is married to a living husband, then adultery occurs; when relatives get married, incest will follow; When a minor gets married to an adult girl, enmity, poisoning, adultery, incest, and murder can happen. And what’s even worse is that many die in such sins, and the priest who performed the wedding turns out to be the culprit of all this evil and therefore clearly plunges himself and others into the ditch of eternal destruction. If the husband has lost his wife - has freed himself from the law of marriage, by which the wife is obligated to the husband and the husband is obligated to the wife, then he can more conveniently worry about how to please the Lord (1 Cor. 7:32-34). Likewise, a wife who has lost her husband can more easily worry about how to please the Lord. Satan, the ever-present enemy of Christians, both among other Christians and between wives and husbands, tries to destroy love and peace and sow enmity. This is something worthy of surprise or even regret! Where can we expect greater love, as between husband and wife? A man loves his father and mother with natural love, but the Holy Scripture says: a man will leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife; and the two will become one flesh (Gen. 2:24). Husband and wife become one flesh, according to Scripture. A strong union in one flesh! And who is at enmity with his own flesh? For no one has ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and warms it (Eph. 5:29). But how much enmity we see between these persons, so closely related! You can hardly find a house in which there would be no such tares of the devil. This is how the devil’s cunning works, that where he notices great love, there he makes greater efforts to break it and introduce his own enmity. And how much this plague harms both other Christians, and especially those married, is impossible to explain! Therefore, we must arm ourselves with faith against this enemy and heed how God in His word commands us to treat each other. The union of marriage must be firm and indestructible without blessed reasons. This is what God’s Word commands: whoever divorces his wife, except for the guilt of adultery, gives her a reason to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery (Matthew 5:32). Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and everyone who marries one divorced from her husband commits adultery (Luke 16:18). Are you connected to your wife? don't look for a divorce. And the wife is bound by the law as long as her husband lives (1 Cor. 7:27, 39). Both husband and wife must enter into marriage with their own free will and consent. Whence the priest, at the wedding of both persons, asks: do they enter into marriage by will and with consent? For this reason, marriage cannot be firm without the consent of both persons. Both parents, who forcibly persuade someone to marry, and priests, seeing the disagreement of a person and performing a wedding, are grievously sinning and are subject to proper punishment, for all evil in marriage follows.
