1913 Dec. 5–11. Archim. Hilarion.
Having begun to consider the essay of Fr. prot. Malinovsky, whom he nominated for the highest academic degree, I very soon became convinced that what lay before me was not at all some independent scientific work. “Orthodox Dogmatic Theology” prot. Malinovsky does not even represent any new dogmatic system. The late prof. A.I. Vvedensky rightly called for the first two volumes of the same work Fr. prot. Malinovsky is a dogmatist of the old, Makariev formation. Very often the titles of individual paragraphs of Malinovsky’s dogmatics coincide identically with the titles of paragraphs of Macarius’s dogmatics. The almost complete absence of anything new in the dogmatics under consideration in a methodological sense forces us to characterize it as an old system of dogmatics, only written anew with the help of some new tools. The author does not at all act as the creator of something new; he only collects and repeats the old. That is why I considered it best to avoid assessing the fundamental content of the dogma of the archpriest.
Malinovsky; This content does not contain Archpriest Malinovsky. He is all, his whole scientific appearance in the methods of using manuals, in the methods of collecting and presenting. I tried, if possible, to penetrate into these techniques of a person claiming the highest academic degree, when reading the work of Fr. Malinovsky. From the point of view of the use of manuals, from the side of the author's techniques, I subjected a more or less thorough study to a significant part of the work of Fr. Malinovsky. The literary and scientific techniques of the doctoral student were outlined before me, I think, to a sufficient extent and, it must be said, they were outlined, it must be said, in a not entirely attractive light. In any case, these techniques are hardly common in essays submitted for not only higher, but also intermediate academic degrees. That is why I consider it necessary to dwell in some detail on the characteristics of the scientific and literary techniques of the author of the “Orthodox Dogmatic Theology” under review.
I will present my observations and comments in the order of the paragraphs of the work reviewed, and I will focus mainly on those paragraphs that gave me the opportunity to make the most interesting observations in terms of their quantity and quality. I am not even embarrassed by the fact that I must begin my remarks only with an addition to the second paragraph in the 3rd volume, 72nd in the general system.
