Since we do not always adhere to the same theme, 1200 so as not to be distracted, 1201 and also because 1202 by necessity nature seeks variety 1203 in activities, 1204 in order to exercise in something else, we cannot always adhere to one theme 1205 when we write our words: sometimes our words are completely elevated to the heavenly in their content; sometimes they only develop the theme of the next century; or perhaps they are entirely on the soul, or entirely from instructions regarding the body. But nature forces us to write on various topics, for sometimes it is in heaven, sometimes on earth, in suffering; 1207 sometimes, again, it ascends to the Creator, and sometimes it remains with the creature in amazement; sometimes it also thinks about the future, 1208 reflecting on hidden contemplations; sometimes to what relates to the economy of times. 1209 Therefore, let the reader 1210 not be embarrassed by imagining that these are presented in a disorderly manner, but let him delve into this 1211 with understanding 1212 and great consciousness, 1213 nature, through its variability, has taught us to devote our words not only to contemplation, but also to those circumstances that are associated with the movements of the mind. 1214 For in an instant, providentially, 1215 changes occur, and then it is also necessary to change words in order to understand them: this depends on the state of a person 1216 and on the enlightenment of his thoughts 1217, or on his rudeness, or on passions, or on circumstances. Thus, according to its illness or health, the mind seeks verbal nutrition, which would give it material 1218 for contemplation, like a bee that flies around various flowers 1219 and collects material from them, making honeycombs. 2. When the mind is enlightened at least a little, then it does not need much material from sensual words for contemplation, for the very natures of creatures and various providential 1220 in relation to them can replace the written ones. 1221 He often goes beyond the boundaries of these visible natures and penetrates into the innermost essences with thought. 1222 It happens that even above this he ascends and acquires the power to reflect 1223 on the venerable Creator: thanks to mercy, from the Source of life, 1224 he suddenly approaches the movements of the mind, penetrates into the divine Holy of Holies, as far as is allowed to creatures, a certain mysterious insight regarding them, as well as a true knowledge of the venerable and great nature 1225 and a true sense of what they do not dare to touch the written words. 1226 It happens that, due to their mystery, it is not permissible to dare to write them down. 1227 And it happens that since they are not even written down, it is impossible to talk about them.
