1. I also remind you of this, O man who walks in silence, 1127 and give you a sign, the truth of which you will know by experience. For, according to the choice, reading eases the brother’s despondency and darkness when he is in his cell, and he rejoices and rejoices in God; and the burden of his labors is lightened for him, and he is comforted, and receives confirmation of hope and knowledge in his mind. I am not speaking against providential will. However, the reason for the appearance of these is mostly in ourselves. I mean joy and sadness, heaviness and fatigue, intense warmth and joyful beating of the heart, as well as the fading of this. Although many times, imagining that we were providentially left in darkness and anxiety, we approached similar opinions, 1131 however, immediately as we approach them, rejoicing and joy greet us thanks to the Scriptures. Then we understand that it is our own anxiety and inattention to reasonable conversation. 3. For I myself have gone through many experiences of this kind, 1132 and what I found I have described here as a reminder. out of love for the brothers, and many, I think, will benefit from these experiences and will succeed when they understand that half of the heaviness in silence is destroyed by the form of reading, sometimes by thoughts, 1133 which they taste thanks to the light of wisdom, in words.
