On the need for a historical-dogmatic apology for the ninth member of the creed Published according to the publication: On the need for a historical-dogmatic apology for the ninth member of the Creed. – Theological Bulletin, 1913, February, Sergiev Posad. Signed: Vladimir Troitsky. The work is a speech at a meeting of the Council of the Moscow Theological Academy on December 11, 1912 before the defense of a master's thesis on the topic “Essays on the history of the dogma of the Church.” Essays on the history of the dogma of the church Published according to the publication: Essays on the history of dogma about the Church. Sergiev Posad, 1912. Signed: Vladimir Troitsky, acting. Doctor of Associate Professor at the Moscow Theological Academy. On the title page of the copy stored in the library of the Sretensky Monastery, there is an inscription: “To dear Nikolai Petrovich Sapozhnikov, on the day of the Angel, with a heartfelt wish to serve the Church under a different name from the author. 1912, XII, 6". The text is printed with minor stylistic corrections, with words inserted for clarity in parentheses. Scripture quotations are in italics. The author's emphasis in the text is given in straight bold font. After graduating from the Theological Academy in 1910 with a candidate of theology degree, Vladimir Troitsky was left there as a professorial fellow. A year later, he was appointed to the position of associate professor in the department of Holy Scripture of the New Testament. Around this time we can also date the beginning of work on his master’s thesis “Essays on the History of the Dogma of the Church” - a topic to which the author subsequently returned several times and which became one of the most important in the theological and journalistic heritage of the holy martyr. Individual chapters of the future dissertation were published in the Theological Bulletin in May–October 1912 as separate articles; “The concept of the Church in the anti-Jewish polemic with Donatism”, “The question of the Church in the dogmatic polemic with Donatism. Optatus of Milevia”, “The Question of the Church in the polemic of St. Augustine against the Donatists” (without ending). The main theses of the future dissertation were examined in the work “The New Testament Teaching on the Church,” published in the “Voice of the Church” in the March, May and June issues for 1912. Written by a very young man (the author was 26 years old), the work amazes with its scientific and theological maturity, deep knowledge of sources, especially the works of the holy fathers and monuments of ancient church literature. Work on the master's thesis took two years and by the spring of 1912 it was completed and submitted for reading to the reviewers: the MDA professor in the department of apologetics Glagolev S.S. and the professor in the department of Holy Scripture of the New Testament M.D. Muretov. On September 25 of the same year, on the day of memory of St. Sergius of Radonezh, Vladimir Troitsky writes the preface to his dissertation and submits it to the synodal printing house in Sergiev Posad. The assigned reviewers provided their feedback at the end of November. In a review by Prof. Glagolev S.S., in particular, said: “Books such as the book of Mr. Troitsky do not often appear in Rus'. Their appearance is a celebration of theological science.” Prof. Muretov M.D., noting that Mr. Troitsky’s work “not only complements, but also completely surpasses the work of his Russian predecessors,” ended his review with a high assessment: “If it were up to me, I would, without any hesitation, recognize Troitsky’s dissertation as fully worthy of not only a master’s degree, but also a doctorate.” (Journal of meetings of the council of the Moscow Theological Academy for 1912. – Theological Bulletin, 1913, No. 7–8, pp. 584, 589; M. For reviews of the award of an academic degree, see: Holiday for theological science. - Russian word. 1913, no. 12. The defense of the dissertation took place on December 11, 1912 at a meeting of the Council of the Moscow Theological Academy in the presence of its rector, Theodore (Pozdeevsky), Bishop of Volokolamsk, and the entire scientific corporation. Traditionally, defense took the form of a dispute. On January 16, 1913, the Holy Synod approved Vladimir Troitsky with the rank of Master of Theology and the position of Associate Professor. In March of the same year, the master's thesis was awarded the Makaryev Prize. For a brief overview of the work, see Essay on the life and work of Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky), Archbishop of Verei (pp. 14–23 of this edition). 1. New Testament teaching about the church The New Testament teaching about the Church can be the subject of special study; Special works are dedicated to him in Russian theological literature (see: Iv. Mansvetov. New Testament teaching about the Church. M., 1879; E. Aquilonov. Church. Scientific definitions of the Church and the apostolic teaching about it as the Body of Christ. St. Petersburg, 1894). In our study, the subject of which is the history of the dogma of the Church, we can, of course, give only the most general outline of the New Testament teaching, which, not having independent and irrelevant scientific significance, can only serve as an introduction to the history of the dogma of the Church itself. However. and in further chapters of our study, we will sometimes have to turn to the sacred books of the New Testament, and besides, the very history of the dogma of the Church is, as it were, an interpretation of the teaching of the New Testament. 2. The concept of the church in the anti-Jewish polemics of the first two centuries 3. The doctrine of the church of anti-Gnostic writers 4. The doctrine of the holiness of the church and the fight against Montanism 5. Doctrine of the Church of St. Cyprian of Carthage 6. The question of the church in the dogmatic polemic with Donatism
