In Alexandria, Bruchium, besieged for many years, was finally taken. Claudius defeats the Goths, who devastated Illyricum and Macedonia, for which he was given a golden shield in the curia, and a golden statue in the Capitol. Claudius dies in Sirmium. Quintillus, brother of Claudius, receives the name Augustus from the Senate, and on the seventeenth day of his reign is killed in Aquileia. We translate the chronicle of Eusebius according to Jerome’s account, starting only from the Nativity of Christ, bearing in mind theological and church-historical interest, which the previous part of the chronicle does not represent. On the same basis, we consider it possible to omit in the translation the chronological indication of the years from Abraham, according to the Olympiads and according to the years of the reign of the kings of Judah (before the destruction of Jerusalem) and limit ourselves to Christian chronology.
