The Prophet also says that in the outer courtyard, he saw, there were other churches, and in front of the churches the passages were ten cubits wide and one hundred long. The light of the passage refers to what we call lumen. This was set apart, as the Prophet said, for the priests to eat consecrated food; and the one who showed this to him commanded that no one should enter there together with the priests, and that the priests themselves, when clothed in the priestly robe and performing the divine service, should not go out into the outer courtyard, for it was not allowed for any of the people to lightly touch the priests clothed in the priestly robe. Why should they, in these churches, take off their clothes designated for priestly service, and put on others, and then go out to the people? He showed me, says the Prophet, the circle he measured, and from the measurement he said that each of the four sides: eastern, western, southern and northern has five hundred cubits, so that if these five hundred are taken four times, then the entire circumference will be two thousand cubits.
