Гимн 42. О богословии и о том, что Божественное естество неисследимо и совершенно непостижимо для людей 324 .

Lord our God, Father, Son and Soul,
You are formless in image, but most beautiful to behold,
With its inexplicable beauty, darkening every vision,
Beautiful beyond sight, for You surpass everything, Infinite in number, visible to those whom You will,
An essential essence, unknown even to the Angels;
For they know Your existence from Your actions.
After all, You called Yourself God, truly existing (Ex. 3:14);
This is what we call essence, we call hypostasis,
Calling Hypostatic (ἐνυπόστατον) Him Whom no one has ever seen -
Trinitarian God, one beginningless Beginning.
Otherwise, how can we dare to call You an essence,
Or glorify three separate hypostases in You?
And what is the connection (of them) - who will fully understand?
For if the Father is in You, and You in Your Father,
And from Him comes Your Holy Spirit,
And You Yourself, Lord, are Your Spirit,
The Spirit is called Lord and my God,
And Your Father is and is called Spirit;
However, no one, either from the Angels or from the people, has ever seen,
I neither contemplated this nor recognized the image;
(Yes, and) how to say (this)? how to express? how to dare to call it: a department,
Or by connection, or by merging, or by mixing, or by dissolving?
How can one be called three, and three one?
And therefore, Master, based on what You said
And what I have taught, every faithful one believes and praises Your power,
Since everything about You is completely incomprehensible,
Unknown and inexpressible 325 for Thy creatures.
For Your existence is already inconceivable,
Since You exist uncreated, just as You gave birth (uncreated).
And how will the created one understand the image of Your being?
Or the birth of Your Son, God and Word,
Or the procession of Your Divine Spirit, so that He may know Your union and understand Your separation,
And accurately studied the appearance of Your essence?
No one has yet seen anything of Yours that I have spoken about.
For it is impossible for God to be different by nature,
So that Your nature can be explored
Essence, appearance and image, and hypostasis as well.
But You Yourself in Yourself exist alone as God Trinity,
Alone knowing Himself, Your Son and Spirit
And by Them alone, known as co-natural.
Others, like the rays of the sensual sun,
And [then if] they are good-sighted and clearly sighted,
Sitting inside the house, they see those entering,
They don’t see the sun at all;
So is the light of Your glory, so is Your illumination,
And their (even) fortune-telling, purified mind
Those who seek You from the heart are honored to see You.
You (Yourself), what are You in essence and what kind,
Or how You gave birth once, or how You always give birth
And you are not separated from what is born from You, but He
Everything is in You, filling everything with Divinity;
But you, Father, abide entirely in the Son Himself
And you have the Divine Spirit proceeding from You,
Omniscient and (all) fulfilling; as God essentially
And He is not separated from You, for He flows from You
(You are the source of good things, and every good thing is Your Son,
Through the Spirit, distributing them to all with dignity,
Benevolent and philanthropic, both to Angels and to men),
No one (I say) has ever seen either of the Angels or of people
Or I did not know Your existence, for You are uncreated.
Yet You have produced (other things), and can they know
How do You give birth to Your Son and how do You always give birth?
And how does Your Divine Spirit come from You?
And You by no means ever give birth, having given birth, of course, once, Nor emanating, You have not suffered impoverishment or diminishment,
For You remain overflowing, never failing above all things,
All over the whole world, visible and mental,
And vice versa, you are outside them, my God,
Absolutely allowing no increase or decrease,
All though motionless, always remaining thus,
But with your actions you are always constantly moving.
For You, the Father, are constantly working,
And Your Son brings about the salvation of all,
And provides, and improves, and supports, and nourishes,
Gives life and regenerates by the Holy Spirit.
For what the Son sees the Father doing,
This He Himself also does, as He said (John 5:19).
Thus, being both motionless and somehow ever-moving,
You neither move, nor stand, nor sit backwards;
But, always sitting, you are absolutely always standing;
Standing on the contrary, you are always moving,
Never passing, for where will You go?
Everything, as said, filling and being above all,
To what other place or country will you go?
But you are not standing, for You are incorporeal.
Simple, all-filling, completely indescribable,
Insubstantial, indescribable, You are entirely incomprehensible;
And how can we say that You are sitting, or vice versa, that You are standing?
How can we claim that You are sitting or on what throne,
When You hold heaven and earth in Your hand,
And everything that is under the earth is held together by Your strength?
What kind of throne would accommodate (You) or what kind of church?
Or how or where 326 was it built? or on what grounds,
On what pillars does it rise? - who will completely understand (You)? Woe to people and all created nature,
Daring to explore things about God,
Before she is illuminated, enlightened, before she sees the Divine (things),
And she will not become a contemplator of the mysteries of Christ.
Which even Paul, having seen, was completely unable to express.
He was not worthy to hear anything great about God himself,
To understand or to fully learn,
Besides the fact that He is the real God of all and the Creator,
Creator and Giver of all produced (things).
We, the most unfortunate ones, imprisoned in darkness,
And being completely darkness through the enjoyment of pleasures,
And those who do not know themselves, how and in what way they become possessed
Buried by passions, blind and dead,
Exploring the truly Existent, beginningless, uncreated God,
One immortal and invisible to all,
We talk about God as if we know for sure,
Being (themselves) removed from God.
For if we had united ourselves with Him, we would never have dared
Talk about Him, seeing that He has everything
Ineffable and incomprehensible;
And not only concerning Him (Himself), but also
His works are mostly unknown to everyone.
For who could explain (even) how He formed me from the beginning?
With what hands He took the dust, He is completely incorporeal,
And how did he who has no mouth, like us, breathe into me?
And how did I become an immortal soul (Gen. 2:7)?
Tell me how bones, nerves (were formed) from clay,
Meat, sinews, skin, hair,
Eyes and ears, lips and tongue? Like vocal organs and hard teeth
Do you form articulate speech through breathing?
From dry and wet, warm and cold matter,
Through a mixture of opposite (elements), He made me a living (being).
So how is the mind related to the flesh, and how is the flesh
Dissolved with the immaterial mind without mixing or merging?
The mind and soul, without mixing, pronounce
Inside word for people and stay the same
Indivisible, unchanging and completely unfused.
So, knowing, brethren, that this is inexplicable
And it is incomprehensible to everyone that what concerns us,
How do we not tremble to examine Him who is from the carrier
Created us as such, or to think and speak
About what is above words and above our mind?
So, being creatures, fear the Creator
And search only His commandments;
Try to comply with them with all your might,
If you want to become heirs of that life.
If you neglect His commandments,
And despise His will, as He said 327,
And you won’t believe Him just by one word, of course;
Neither the glory, nor the dignity, nor the wealth of this world,
Not even knowledge of many external sciences,
Neither writing nor composing eloquent words,
Nothing else from earthly affairs and things
It will not bring (you) any benefit then,
When everything and everyone will be judged by my God.
But that word of the Lord, which we despised,
Will then stand in front of everyone individually
And he will condemn everyone who did not keep it.
For it is not an idle word, but the living word of God
Living and abiding forever and ever. So the judgment will [take place] as He said, 1)
When the commandment at the same time, woe to me, meets
And he will reprove the faithful and the completely unfaithful,
Obedient and disobedient to the words of the Lord,
The one who was diligent and the one who was careless.
And thus the unrighteous will be separated from the righteous,
Disobedient from those who are completely obedient to Christ,
Those who now love this world from the lovers of God,
The hard-hearted from the merciful, and from the merciful
Unmerciful; and they will all become together
Naked from the wealth, honor and power with which
They have enjoyed themselves in the world, and, alas for me, they will condemn themselves,
Becoming self-judges of your own affairs;
And they will hear: Go away, small and great,
Those who have not submitted to Me, the Lord, the Lover of Mankind.
What righteous condemnation may we be delivered from, Master,
And may we please some of Your sheep, O Word,
Tune, as having no hope of salvation
From works and condemned, now and forever.
Instead of ἀνέκφραατα in P. r. reads ἀνέκφορα - indescribable, intimate.
ἢ ποῦ added to P. r.; This is not the case in the printed text.
Perhaps St. The Father means here Matt. 7, 21; Onion. 12, 47; Mr. 16, 16 or rather all those places of St. Scriptures that speak about the fulfillment and non-fulfillment of the will of God and Divine commands.
