O God and Lord Almighty! who will be satisfied with Your invisible beauty? who will be filled with Your immensity? Who 255 (even if) He walked worthily in Thy commandments, shall see the light of Thy countenance? (Something) great, wondrous and completely impossible - for someone living in this difficult and gloomy world to be carried away with his body from the world. O wonderful mystery! Who has crossed the barrier of his flesh? who, having passed through the darkness of decay, disappeared (from here), leaving the whole world? O wretchedness of (our) knowledge and speech 256! For where did he hide who, having passed through this world, was carried away beyond the limits of everything visible? - say, the wisdom of the wise is rejected, not to say - turned by God into madness, as Paul says (I Cor. 1, 19-20) and every servant of God. He is a man of the desires of the Spirit; he, approaching his body to his body, can be holy in spirit. For outside the world and these bodies there is no desire for carnal passion, but a certain dispassion, which whoever loved, acquired life through this love.
For even if you saw him behaving indecently and as if resorting to (this kind of) actions, know that he made this body dead, I do not say (a body) without a soul through which it moves, but without evil lust. For the pleasure of beautiful dispassion and that light, which because of it loves me in an indescribable way, bringing my whole mind into a frenzy, delights it and, holding it naked with an immaterial hand, does not allow me to fall away from love for it (the light) or allow (in my mind) a passionate thought, but incessantly kisses (me); and this love ignites my soul, and there is no other feeling in me. For inasmuch as the purest bread is more valuable and sweeter than dung, so is the higher incomparably superior to the lower for those who have tasted it well. Be ashamed, O wisdom of the sages, truly devoid of knowledge. For the simplicity of our speech (itself) possesses true wisdom, Approaching God and worshiping Him from Whom all life's wisdom is given, through which I am recreated and adored, contemplating God forever and ever. Amen.
In P. r. here to stand καὶ - and by force.
In P. k. and in l. This hymn is known as the 9th word or chapter.
In P. r. not τίς, but πῶς - in what way, walking with dignity, etc.
Βαβαὶ γνώαεως καὶ λόγων εὐτελείας; d l. n. Papae, quam facilis ista cognitio, et non subtilis oratio - o how light is this knowledge and how imprecise is (our) speech!
