Exaltation (Elevation) of the Precious Cross

What is this terrible mystery that is taking place in me? (it) neither a word is able to express, nor my pitiful hand is able to inscribe (in writing) to the praise and glory of Him who is above praise 243 and above words. After all, if what is happening now in me as a prodigal is ineffable and unspeakable, then how, tell me, can He who is the Giver and Author of this need to receive praise or glory from us? For He who is (already) glorified cannot be glorified, just as the sun that we see in this world cannot be illuminated or cannot borrow light. It illuminates, but is not illuminated; it pours out light, but does not receive, since it has (light) which it received from the Creator from the beginning. Therefore, if God, the Creator of all things, who created the sun, created it without lack, so that it would shine with abundant light and in no way need anything else greater; then how could the Creator of the sun, who is completely in need of nothing and, like the omnipotent, with one wave and will, fulfill everything with all sorts of blessings, receive glory from me, the most insignificant? Meanwhile, my tongue is at a loss for words, and my mind (although) sees what is happening, but cannot explain it. He sees and wants to express it, but cannot find words, because he contemplates the invisible, completely formless, completely simple, uncomplicated and limitless in size. For he sees no beginning, no end, and does not notice any middle at all; and how will he express what he sees? It is seen, I think, (something) as a collective whole, (ἀνακεφαλαιούμενον ὅλον) but in no way in (its) essence (its own), but through the sacrament. After all, from fire you kindle (fire) and you completely receive fire. And although it (remains) indivisible and inexhaustible, as before; however, what is communicated is separated from the first, and since it is something corporeal, it is divided into many lamps. The same thing, like (something) spiritual and immeasurable, remains completely indivisible and indestructible. For, being communicated, it is not divided into many (parts), but remains indivisible, and in me it happens, rising in me, inside my pitiful heart, like the sun or the disk of the sun, spherical and light-like, for it is a flame. I don’t know, as it is said, what to say about him. And I wanted to remain silent (oh if I could!), but a terrible miracle stirs up my heart and opens my defiled lips. He forces me to speak and write, even if I do not want to, by the One who has now shone in my dark heart, who has shown me wondrous (deeds) that eyes have not seen, who has descended into me as the last of all, who has shown me as the son and disciple of the Apostle 244, me (I say), who was possessed by the terrible dragon - the murderer, (me) the former doer and servant of all iniquity. Eternal Sun, who finally shone in hell and illuminated my darkened soul, who gave me a non-evening day (which is incredible for the careless and lazy like me), 245, who filled my poverty with all sorts of blessings, You Yourself grant me both word and speech, (to) tell everyone about Your miracles, which You are still doing with us - Your servants, so that sleeping in the darkness of laziness and claiming that it is impossible for sinners to be saved and to be pardoned, as Peter and the other Apostles, saints, reverends and righteous (were saved and pardoned), knew and understood that for Your goodness it was, and is, and will be; so that those who think that they have You - the Light of the whole world, and (however) say that they do not see You, do not live in the light, are not enlightened and do not constantly contemplate You, Savior, may know that You have not shone in their mind, have not entered into their unclean heart, and they are in vain comforted by empty hope, thinking that after death they will see Your light. For the pledge (of this) from here is also the seal (Your) here, of course, from You, Savior, given to the right hands of the sheep. After all, if the death of everyone is the conclusion (of life), and after death for everyone there will equally be a (state of) inactivity, and no one will be able to create anything either good or evil, then everyone, of course, will be what he turns out to be (then), my Savior. This is what frightens me, Master; it makes me tremble; it melts away all my feelings. Like a blind man, having died and reposed there, will no longer see the sun in a sensual way, although after the resurrection he will again receive the light of his eyes; so the one who dies, having a blinded mind, will not see You, my God, intelligent Sun, but, having departed from darkness, will move into darkness, and will be removed from You forever. None of the people who believe in You, Master, none of those baptized in Your name will endure this great and terrible burden of separation from You, O Grace, because this is a terrible sorrow, terrible, unbearable and eternal sadness. For what could be worse than separation from You, Savior? What is more painful than being separated from Life and living there like a dead person, having lost life, and at the same time being deprived of all benefits, because he who moves away from You is deprived of all benefits? For then it will not be as it is now on earth. After all, now those who do not know You enjoy themselves here bodily and have fun, jumping like foolish animals. Having what You gave for the enjoyment of life, and just looking at this, they think that this will be the case after the soul’s departure from this life. But those who claim that they (although not with You, will be in repose) think badly, (for which they are preparing a certain place - oh madness! - not involved in either light or darkness, located outside the kingdom but also outside Gehenna, far from both the palace and from fiery torment. These unfortunates want to come to it, saying that they do not need Your eternal glory or the kingdom of heaven, but they will be in peace. O (what) their darkness! O wretched state and empty hopes! This is not written anywhere, since this will not happen anywhere! But those who have done divine (deeds) will be in the light of (future) blessings, and those who do evil will be in the darkness of punishment. In the middle there will be a terrible abyss separating one from the other, as You Yourself revealed, having prepared this (Luke 16:26). For this (abyss) in the middle will be more terrible than any torture and torment for the person who falls (into it), for the one who unhappily flies headlong and is cast into (this) abyss of torment 246 and the chaos of destruction, from where it is difficult for those in torment to ascend to the land of the righteous. (Therefore) they prefer to be horribly reduced to ashes by fire than to plunge themselves into this terrible abyss. So, those who want to be there after death are worthy of many tears and sobs, since, being completely insensitive, like dumb animals, they invite (destruction) for themselves and deceive themselves. You, Christ, are the kingdom of heaven, You are the land of the meek, You are a green paradise, You are the palace of the Divine, You are the ineffable mystery, You are the (common) meal for all, You are the bread of life, You are a completely new drink, You are the cup of water and the water of life, You are the unquenchable lamp for each of the saints, You are the robe, and the crown, and the dispenser of crowns, You are joy and repose, You are joy and glory, You are joy, You are joy. And the grace of Your All-Holy Spirit, my God, like the sun, will shine in all the saints; and among them You will shine, the unapproachable Sun; and all of them will be illuminated according to the measure of faith and works, hope and love, purification and enlightenment from Your Spirit, the one long-suffering God and Judge of all, for whom (different) degrees of lightness and degrees of love will be imputed to different abodes and places, and vice versa, the degree of contemplation of You (by each) will be (the degree of) his greatness, glory, pleasure and honor - to distinguish between wonderful abodes and dwellings. These are the various chambers, these are “many abodes,” these are shining clothes of high dignity, the most varied crowns, (precious) stones and pearls, unfading flowers that have a wonderful appearance, these are beds and beds, tables and thrones - and everything that is most pleasant for pleasure was, and is, and will be the contemplation of You alone. So, if those who do not see Your light, as was said (above), and are not visible by You, but are removed from You, are deprived of the contemplation of You, who contains all good things, then where will they find rest? where (will they find) a safe place? where will they live without becoming right? for “the righteous will dwell with Your face” (Psalm 139:14), because You were imagined in their right heart, and they with Your image, my Christ, dwell in You. Oh wonderful thing! oh wonderful gift of mercy! - people are in the image of God, and in them is imagined the One who is inconceivable for everyone - God, unchangeable and immutable by nature, Who is pleased to dwell in all the worthy, so that everyone has within the whole King, and the kingdom itself, and everything related to the kingdom, and shines brighter than the rays of this visible sun, just as my risen God shone. And standing before the One who so glorified them, they will be in amazement at the excess of glory and the continuous increase [in them] of Divine lordship. For there will be no end to progress forever, since stopping (or slowing down) in growth will put an end to the infinite, (will bring) the comprehension of the completely Incomprehensible, and will make the Inconceivable by everyone (the subject of) satiety. But the fullness and glory of His light will be the depth of prosperity and the beginning without end. As having God imagined within, they [the saints] stand before the very One who shines with unapproachable (light): thus the end in them is the beginning of glory; To express my thought more clearly, [I will say] in the end they will have a beginning and in the beginning an end. Completely [absolutely] Complete, agree with me, does not need addition, and those who flow after the Infinite do not reach the end. For if this visible heaven and earth and everything that is on earth pass away (understand what I said); then [will it be possible] to grasp the place where you will find the end, I don’t say bodily, but will you be able to [at least] with your mind embrace the fullness of the incorporeal world? He is not the world, but air, as before [it was], and not air, but inexpressible space, which is called “everything” (universe) 247 and is a completely endless abyss, equally integral from everywhere on different sides, and this “everything” is filled with the Divine Deity. So, those who become partakers of Him and dwell in Him, how can they embrace Him all, so as to (even) be satisfied (with Him)? or how, tell me, will they reach the end of the infinite? - It is impossible (this) and completely unfeasible. Such a thought absolutely cannot even enter the [mind] of the saints, either here in the flesh, or represented there in God. For, covered with the light of Divine glory, illuminated and shining, and enjoying this, they truly know with complete and complete confidence that their improvement will be endless and their progress in glory will be eternal. Where will they stand, I wonder, those who fall away from God and are far removed from Him Who is everywhere? And truly, brothers, this is a miracle filled with great horror, and in order to understand it well and not fall into heresy, as if not trusting the words of the Divine Spirit, the reasoning of an enlightened mind is required. Although they will be inside “everything,” they are truly outside the Divine light and outside God. For just as (blind people) who do not see the shining sun, although completely illuminated (by it) from all sides, are nevertheless outside the light, being removed from it by sense and sight; so the Divine light of the Trinity is in “everything,” but sinners, imprisoned in darkness, and among (it) do not see (it) and have absolutely no divine (knowledge) and feeling; but scorched and condemned by their (own) conscience, they will have unspeakable torment and unspeakable sorrow forever. In P.K. this is 1 word; and in l. paragraph 2 chapter. In the manuscript copy of the Patmos Codex (which we mean when we quote the Patmos Codex or manuscript), this hymn, as well as the introduction to the hymns Ἀρχὴ tῶv θείων ὔμνων, are rewritten in the form of prose, although the first is written in political verse, iambic in 7 ½ feet" (at 15 syllables), and in this form is printed in that Greek. the publication we use. In P. r. omitted: τοῦ ὄντος ὐηὲρ ἔπαινον. Ave. Simeon speaks here about his spiritual father - Simeon the Reverent, as can be seen from the life of Simeon NB. (we mean the full text of the life). This introductory sentence is not in l. p. In P. r. and in l. n. this word is multiplied. number. τό πᾶν – universum; Wed I Cor. 15, 28. You might be interested in:
