Гимн 20. Каковым должно быть монаху, и какое его делание, или преспеяние и восхождение 215 .

Make the house of your soul a chamber in the dwelling of Christ - the King of all - with drops of your tears, cries, sobs, kneeling and frequent sighs, if you wish, O monk, to be truly a monk (μονάζων). And then you will not be lonely (μονάζων), since you will be with the King, and you will be lonely like us, as separated from people and the whole world; this, of course, (means) a monk (μονάζων). Having united with God and the King, you became not alone (οὐ μονάζων), but joined with all the saints, became a cohabitant of the Angels, a fellow resident of the righteous, and truly a joint heir of all the celestials. So, how are you alone when you live where the cathedral of martyrs and saints is, where the face of the prophets and divine Apostles is, where there are countless numbers of righteous people, hierarchs, patriarchs and other saints? How can he who still has Christ living in himself be called unique, tell me? After all, the Father and the Spirit abide with my Christ. How is he alone (μονάζων) who is united with three as if with one?
He who is united with God is not alone, even if he were alone, even if he sat in the desert or was in a cave. If anyone has not found Him, has not known Him, has not accepted Him in all, the incarnate God of the Word, then woe is me! did not become a monk; therefore he is alone, (as) separated and separated from God. Also, each of us is separate and all of us (people of such a spirit) 216 are separated, of course, from other people, and are orphaned and disconnected, although it seems to us that we have unity through coexistence and communicate with each other in crowded meetings. For in spirit and body we are separated (from each other), and that this is true is shown by death, separating everyone from relatives and friends and bringing oblivion of all those now loved. So night, and sleep, and everyday affairs naturally dissolve the unity of many.
Whoever, through virtue, has made his cell a heaven, while sitting in it, contemplates and sees the Creator of heaven and earth, and worships (Him), always being with the unstoppable Light, the unevening Light, the unapproachable Light, from Which he is in no way separated and does not move away at all, neither day nor night, nor in food, nor in drinking, nor even in sleep, or on the road, or when changing places, but both the living and the dead, and to speak more clearly, abides completely eternally with Him in soul. For how can the bride be separated from the groom, or the husband from the wife with whom he once married? Legislator, tell me, will he not keep the law? He who said: “and the two will become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24) how will He not become completely (one) spirit with it (soul)? For the wife is in the husband, and the husband is in the wife, and the soul is in God, but God is also in the soul - united and known in all the saints.
This is how those who, purifying their souls in this world through repentance and withdrawing from others, become monks, unite with God. They perceive the mind of Christ, that is, a completely undeceitful mouth and tongue, through which they converse with the Almighty Father and always cry out: O Father, All-Tsar and Creator of all! their cell is the sky, and (themselves) they are the sun, and in them abides the unstoppable and Divine Light, which enlightens every person who comes into this world and is born of the Holy Spirit (John 1:9). So, there is no night in them, but in what way - I cannot tell you. For I tremble as I write this to you, and as I think about it I tremble; but I explain to you how and in what way those who serve God and Him alone live, who sought and found Him instead of everything, who loved Him alone, united with Him alone and became monks, as one with One, (even if they remained among a large gathering of people) 217 .
(For truly those are monks and only those who retire) 218 who (abide) with one God and alone in God, stripped of all kinds of thoughts and thoughts and contemplating God alone in a thoughtless mind (ἀνευνοίῳ) 219 established in the light, like an arrow in a wall, or a star in the sky, or I don’t know, how (otherwise) to say. However, they live in (their) cells, as in some kind of bright palace, and think that they are in heaven, or 220 and truly (there) are. Be careful not to be an unbeliever. For they are not on earth, although they are held by the earth, but they live in the light of the future age, in which Angels hover and walk, in which the principalities and powers admire, and all thrones and dominions are strengthened. For although God rests in (His) saints, yet the saints also live and move in God, 221 walking in the light, lo and behold, as if on solid ground, like angels and sons of the Most High. After death, they will be Gods, co-abiding with God, with Him who is by nature God - those who became like Him by adoption.
Now they are inferior only to Him in that they are held by the body, being, alas for me, covered and shrouded in it, like prisoners in a prison, who, although they see the sun and its rays penetrating through a well, cannot contemplate or see it all, having left the prison, or, looking out, freely look at the air. And this is what saddens them (and crushes them) that they do not see the whole of Christ, although they see everything, and that they cannot get rid of the bonds of the body, although they have freed themselves from passions and all attachments; but having been freed from many things, they are held back by one thing. For he who is bound by many ties does not hope to be freed from them; and whoever was able to break very many of the bonds, and is (still) held back by one (something), grieves even more than others and always diligently seeks to get rid of (also) in order to appear free, in order to walk, rejoicing, and hasten to go to the one whom he loved and for whose sake he sought to be released from the bonds.
So, let us all seek the One Who can free us from bonds; We will love Him, the One whose beauty amazes every mind, amazes every heart, stings (every) soul and, lifting (as if on wings) to love, closely binds and unites with God forever.
Yes, my brothers, flow towards Him in your deeds. Hey, friends, rise up and don’t lag behind. Do not contradict us by deceiving yourself. Do not say that it is impossible to perceive the Divine Spirit. Don't say that it is possible to be saved without Him. Therefore, do not say that anyone becomes a partaker of Him in ignorance. Don't say that God is not visible to people. Do not say that people do not see the Divine light, or that it is impossible at present. It has never been impossible, friends, but it is also quite possible for those who wish, for those exclusively who, having spent their lives purified from passions, have made their intellectual eyes pure. For others, sinful defilement truly (is) blindness, which both here and there will deprive them of the Divine light and, do not be deluded, will send them into fire and darkness. Don’t you see, friends, what and how wonderful the Lord is! Oh, do not close your (eyes) mind while looking at the earth! O, do not be enslaved by worries about earthly affairs and possessions and the desire for glory, leaving this Light of eternal life.
To her, friends, come and let us ascend together with me, not with the body, but with the mind, soul and heart, in humility and contrition of heart, crying out to the generously loving and only humane God; and He will certainly hear and have mercy, He will certainly open and appear, and show us His clear light. Why are you pathetic people lazy and careless? Why do you prefer the peace of the body and glory, dishonorable and inglorious, empty and vain? Why do you call a virtuous life (idle and) carefree? - This is not so, brethren, it is not so, do not flatter yourself. But as those who lead a (secular) life, having wives and children and seeking wealth and temporary glory, try and strive to satisfy their desires; Likewise, everyone who repents and serves God must try and always ensure that his repentance is favorable and his service pleasing and perfect.
Then, having been completely appropriated to God through them, he is completely united (with Him) and sees Him in person, and receives boldness towards Him in proportion to this, since he tries to fulfill His will, which we too may be worthy to do and receive mercy with all the saints now, as far as possible in this age, where we will receive all Christ and all the Divine Spirit with the Father forever and ever. Amen.
In II. book 27 word; in l. paragraph 18 chapter.
This explanation is taken from l. n., where inserted: qui hoc animo sumus.
Taken from l. p.: quam vis in frequenti populo sint relicti.
Οἱ μετὰ μόνου τοῦ Θεοῖ καὶ ἐν Θεῷ δὲ μόνοι - this is how this phrase is read in P. p.; in printed Greek. in the text it is omitted, obviously, simply as an oversight.
If we accept the reading of P. k., where instead of ἦ there is "εἰ", then this phrase must be conveyed in the form of a conditional sentence: if indeed they live there, then look, etc.
Β P. k. instead of κινοὺνται is read νοοῦνται, that is, they both live and are known.
