Again the light is shining on me, again I see it clearly. Again He opens (to me) the heavens and cuts (the darkness) of the night, again He produces everything 176, again only He is seen. Again He places (ποιεῖ) me outside everything visible and also separates me from everything sensible. Again, the one who is higher than all the heavens, Whom no one has ever seen, without opening the heavens, without dispersing the night, without tearing apart either the air or the roof of the house, he is inseparably all pitiful with me, inside my cell, inside my mind. At that time 177 when everything remains as it was, light descends into the middle of my heart (oh venerable sacrament) and lifts me above all else. And despite the fact that I am among everything [around], He places me outside of everything, I don’t know if it’s also outside the body. Until then, I truly am entirely where there is one simple light, contemplating which, and I also become simple out of kindness. Such are the extraordinary works of Your miracles, O Christ; These are the works of Your power and love for mankind, which You perform in us unworthy.
That is why I, possessed by Thy fear, tremble, and am constantly worried, and greatly distressed about what I will repay to You or what I will bring for such great gifts of (Your) goodness, for those countless gifts that You have poured out on me; Finding nothing in myself, (since) there is nothing [actually] mine in life, but everything serves You, everything is the work of Your hands, I am even more ashamed (and very tormented) 178, Savior, (wanting) to know what I should do in order to serve and please You, so that on the day of judgment I, the Savior, may appear uncondemned before Your terrible judgment seat.
Listen to what you should do, everyone who wants to be saved, and first of all you who ask Me. Think that now you have died, that now you have renounced and left the whole world, abandoning friends, relatives and all vain glory; at the same time, completely abandoning concern for earthly things, take the cross on your shoulders, tie it tightly and until the end (of life) endure the labors of temptation, the pain of sorrows and the nails of sorrows, accepting (them) with the greatest joy, as a crown of glory. Every hour pierced by the sharp edges of insults and cruelly stoned by all kinds of dishonor, shedding tears instead of blood, you will be a martyr. By enduring reproach and strangulation with great gratitude, you will become a partaker of My Divinity and glory. And if you show yourself to be the last of all, a slave and a servant, then later I will make you the first of all, as I promised. If you love your enemies and all those who hate you, and pray from your heart for those who offend you and do good to them according to your strength, then truly you have become like your Most High Father; and having acquired purity of heart from here, you will see in it God, Whom no one has ever seen.
If you happen to suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness, then rejoice, because the kingdom of heaven has become yours. What's more than that? Do this and much more that I have commanded, and teach others, and you and all others who believe in Me, [do so], if you want to be saved and be with Me forever and ever. If you deny and turn away, considering it a disgrace and dishonor to endure all this, (to be despised) 179 and to lay down your lives for My commandments, then why do you strive to find out how you should be saved (and through what actions you can become friends with Me) 180? Why then do you call Me your God? Why do you also foolishly consider yourself to believe in Me? After all, for your sake I endured all this voluntarily: being crucified on the cross, I died the death of evildoers, and My reproach and shameful death became the glory of the world, life, light, the resurrection of the dead, the praise of all who believe in Me, became the robe of immortality and true deification for all the faithful.
Therefore, those who imitate My honest sufferings will also become partakers of My Divinity and heirs of My kingdom, will become sharers of ineffable and inexpressible blessings and will abide with Me forever. For others, who will not weep and lament? who does not shed tears from the pity of his heart? who will not mourn their great insensibility? For, having abandoned life and terribly rejected God, they gave themselves over to death. Deliver me from some of them, O Lord of all, and grant me, the insignificant and last of Your servants, to become a partaker of Your immaculate passions, so that, as You said, O God, I may become a partaker of the glory and enjoyment of Your blessings, the Word, now, indeed, as in a fortune-telling, image or mirror, “then I will know as I was known” (1 Cor. 13, 12).
