Chapter 9

Ps.9:1. Finally, O secret son, a psalm to David. This psalm depicts the secret deeds of the Savior, for He did much in secret. These are: His birth in the flesh from the Virgin through the Holy Spirit, extraordinary and miraculous powers, death itself, descent into hell and resurrection from the dead. For He did all this in secret. He hid it from the princes of this world. The Prophet, on behalf of humanity, enters with thanksgiving for all these secret deeds, and says: “Let us confess to You, Lord.” The last seal of the Savior’s secret deeds were: His death, everything He accomplished in hell, His resurrection and ascension. Ps.9:2. Let me confess to You, Lord, with all my heart... Ps.9:4. My enemy will never return. Explains what his confession is. “Enemy” refers to death that has been reversed, that is, non-existence. They will faint and perish at Your presence. When death is reversed, then all the resisting force will be reduced to inaction. For if “the last enemy is death” is destroyed (1 Cor. 15:26), then it is clear that even before this the opposing forces have already been destroyed. Ps.9:5. For Thou hast created my judgment, and my judgment. Represents the reason for thanksgiving. - explains God's visitation in court. Ps.9:6. You rebuked with your tongue, and the wicked perished. Obviously, he understands mental enemies. You have consumed his name forever. He talks about the mental serpent or the devil. since prohibition also means correction; then we can say that, after the correction of the pagans by the Apostles, “the wicked perished,” when the incense of fat died out and ceased on his altar. For after he “rebuked with his tongue” and they turned to the Lord, who acted in them when they were “the sons of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2), the devil perished with the churches of idols, which, like cities, accommodated a multitude attached to wickedness, and so perished that not a trace of them remained. This can also be interpreted about the last judgment. For then the Lord will forbid sinners and the devil, this “wicked” one in the true sense, will completely perish. And the cities, after the destruction of the wickedness that dwelt in them from ancient times, will receive the edification of piety. Ps.9:7. The enemy will run out of weapons to the end. He calls the devil's weapons the resistive forces that gave him strength. “Cities” are resistive forces that, like solid, walled cities, kept under their power those captured by their charm. And what cities should he talk about, besides those about which it is said in another place: “Thou hast laid down the cities in dust, solid cities, that their foundations should fall into mouth” (Isa. 25:2)? It is obvious that these, as explained above, are resistive forces. – their death became public. It means either final destruction, or the excessiveness of disasters, or the obviousness of destruction. Ps.9:10. And the Lord is a refuge for the needy, that is, the people are spiritually poor. David often calls himself poor and poor, although he was on the royal throne. For he knew that everything human is powerless than a shadow. Helper in good times, in sorrows, as in another place it is said: “It is a pleasant time for me to listen to you” (Is. 49:8). “Time of trouble” refers to the time of sorrow. For although we always, even in prosperity, need help, help in sorrow is much more tangible for us. Ps.9:12. Sing to the Lord who dwells in Zion, that is, in the heavenly Jerusalem. Proclaim His beginnings among the nations. This speaks, as it were, to the Apostles and preachers of the Gospel. What kind of undertakings these are is shown below. Ps.9:13. As if I seek their blood, I will remember them, that is, he will seek the blood shed for Him in order to demand satisfaction for them. You again call the poor those who have become poor for His sake, who, constantly turning to Him with prayers, ask for vengeance on the demons for the insults they have caused. Ps.9:14. Lift me up from the gates of mortals. For this reason you raise me up from the land of humility, so that I may rejoice in the heavenly Zion. Ps.9:15. In the gates of daughter Sioni" - instead: I will chant for a long time. Ps.9:17. We know that the Lord will do justice. For the judgment is truly righteous, according to which those who prepared death for a person are embraced by it. For at the time of judgment they too will know the Judge who will be judged. Ps.9:20. Arise, Lord, so that man may not be strong. He prays that the Only Begotten will shine forth as beings on earth, and that that highly sophisticated devil, whom David calls “man” in this psalm, will no longer raise his eyebrows. Let the nations be judged before You. Prays for the speedy calling of the pagans to salvation. Ps.9:21. Set, O Lord, a lawgiver over them. Who is the giver of the law except the One who introduced the law of the New Testament among us? Let the pagans understand that they are human beings. Due to excessive demonic seduction, they turned into the image of cattle, which is why it is said about them: “Be like the foolish cattle and become like them” (Ps. 48:13). They get bogged down (instead of “bogged down”) in the advice they even think. For it is said: “You stumble the wise in their deceit” (1 Cor. 3:19; cf. Job 5:13). Ps.9:24. For to praise is a sinner in the lusts of his soul. Such is longsuffering that, since the wicked remain unpunished, some of the foolish already approve of their lives. Ps.9:25. Annoy the Lord, sinner He irritated me by mocking what was said in Scripture about Providence and His judgment. For many, hearing something like this, immediately indulge in laughter. And in this regard it is said: according to the multitude of his wrath, so the whole will have this meaning: the sinner irritated the Lord, storing up a lot of wrath for himself; because the speech of “one’s own” must be understood about the irritant. And what was added later: “he will not require” should be read after the punctuation mark, so that the following meaning will come out: is it possible that, although the sinner irritates God, inflaming himself with a lot of anger, yet God will not demand? What is read after the punctuation mark can also have the following meaning: will not God demand and reward him according to the wrath that he collected for himself on the day of his wrath? Having lost the fear of God in his soul, he constantly lives in sin. The beginning of every evil deed is not to think about God the judge. Ps.9:26. Thy judgment shall be taken away from his presence. He doesn’t want to know that You are the righteous Judgment. For whoever does not know that there is God does not know that there is a Judge. He will have all his enemies. This is similar to what was said: “I have embraced the whole world in my hand like a nest” (Is. 10:14). Of the temptations, some concern the soul, others – the body, and others – the surrounding body. And temptations affecting the soul are called unclean thoughts, which give rise to sins and false teachings. Temptations related to the body are the cause of blows, torment, persecution, imprisonment and death. And the temptations surrounding the body consist of damage to money and property, loss of children, loss of wives. From this it is clear that Satan certainly prevailed over every righteous person through one of the enumerated temptations. For Christ alone “thou shalt not commit sin, lest flattery be found in His mouth” (1 Peter 2:22). Ps.9:27. I say in my heart: I do not move, that is, I will not fall into error, I will not turn aside from the path to childbirth, because I will not tolerate anything bad. Ps.9:28. His mouth is full of oaths. He calculated that his prosperity would be constant; why, his mouth is full of “sorrow and flattery,” and he catches the beggars in order to kill them in his nets. In what has been said: “with the rich,” what else can be understood if not those who become rich in evil? For they cooperate with their father the devil in his schemes against the poor. Ps.9:29. He will squat in fishing with the rich. Sitting in assemblies and hosts, he prepares snares and intrigues for the innocent. Ps.9:31. He will bow and fall. When the devil says: I have won, then he will fall and be put to shame. Ps.9:32. Speech in your heart: forget God. The devil says this not because it really is so, but with the intention of deceiving us, so that we will stumble, thinking that God is not caring about human affairs. Ps.9:33. Arise, Lord my God. He wants to stir up God’s touch and God’s goodness; because until the hand of God is lifted up against the madness of the wicked, they are more given over to insolence. May Your hand be lifted up. Raise Your hand and teach them that You provide for the offended, and, as if rising from sleep, show that the punishment You send to them is higher than their plans. And punish them, but spare the offended one, offended by their insolence and blasphemy. Ps.9:34. For the sake of angering the wicked God, he says? Speak in your heart: He will not require. This is the reason why he is exalted and falls. Ps.9:35. See how you see illness and rage. You know everything, O Lord, not only what is done in practice is not hidden from You, but also what comes to mind and thought. You know exactly their illnesses, the rage of the offenders, and the irritation of people. For You penetrate into the thoughts of everyone, “testing the hearts and bowels” (Ps. 7:10). And looking at all this, you endure long-suffering, knowing that everything is under your hand and there is nowhere for a person to run. A beggar has been left for you to eat, be a helper for the sire, - that is, he expects help from You. Ps.9:36. Break the muscle of the sinner and the evil one, - that is, crush the dominion of the enemy. His sin will be exacted and will not be found, - because of sin itself. In its entirety, this speech has the following meaning: if you seek the sin of the evil one, it will not be found; because the evil one will perish from sin. Those saved by God are found, as for example: “My servant David was found” (Ps. 88:21), and “the lost coin” was found (Luke 15:9); because it would have perished if it had not been found, but those who perish are not found forever; because the Judge abides. Ps.9:37. The Lord is King forever, O Gentiles, you will perish from His land, because during His reign they will be thrown into eternal fire. Unjust people are called “pagan ami”, as living not according to the law, but retaining pagan and barbaric cruelty. He asks to destroy them, saying: “You will perish,” and threatening them with ultimate destruction, so that those suffering from their injustice will find rest for themselves, and they themselves will become wise. Ps.9:38. Thou hast heard the desire of the poor, O Lord. For such was their desire, such was their zeal to be worthy of future blessings. Thy ear is attentive to the preparation of their hearts. For having been prepared for this, they are ready in their hearts to endure everything. And the preparation of the heart is a certain promise - to agree with the spiritual movements of God's will.
