Chapter 56

Ps.56:1. In the end, let David not destroy the pillars, and never run away from the face of Saul into the cave. David, fleeing from the pursuing Saul, entered the cave with four hundred men, and after cutting off the edge of Saul's robe, he sang this psalm (1 Sam. 24:4-5). But it also refers to what Christ did for us, when in the last days, appearing on earth with flesh, he repelled corruption from us. Ps.56:2. Have mercy on me, God, have mercy on me. Ps.56:6. Ascend into heaven, O God, and Thy glory be throughout all the earth. Although for our salvation You condescended to free exhaustion, and were obedient even to death, yet again ascend to heaven, because by ascending the whole earth You will fill Your glory. Ps.56:7. A net has been prepared for my feet. You made it so that those who overthrew me with nets themselves fell into the ditch they dug. Therefore, having succeeded in this, “ascend to heaven.” Ps.56:8. My heart is ready, God, my heart is ready. He begs to be given the Holy Spirit, which the Only Begotten One who ascended to heaven promised to send, and says that his heart has become ready to receive the Spirit. Ps.56:9. Arise, my glory. He calls the prophetic Spirit his “glory.” Arise, I play psalms and harp. “Psalter” refers to the soul, and “harp” refers to the body. Having felt the mental light, I will rise to chant. Ps.56:10. Let us confess to you among the people, Lord, I will sing to you among the nations. The conversion of all nations is evangelized in its profession, because all nations sing its hymns. Ps.56:11.
