Chapter 35

Ps.35:1. Finally, to the servant of the Lord David. This psalm contains an accusation of pride and a denunciation of the wickedness of the Jewish people, as well as a song in praise of the righteous judgments of God, with which God created the heavenly places, and also thanksgiving to the Father for the good deeds manifested in Jesus, and on top of all this, a prayer that protects against falling into pride. Ps.35:2. The most lawless verb is to sin in yourself. One brought up in anger thinks that no one sees the innermost plans of his soul. It is said: “verb”, instead of “thinks” or “assumes”. The reason for such insensibility in him is the lack of fear of the all-seeing Lord. There is no fear of God before his eyes. Having once decided to break the law, he removes the fear of God from his eyes, because by the fear of the Lord everyone restrains himself from evil. Ps.35:3. As if to flatter him. He voluntarily remains in this ignorance, not having the desire to believe his deeds and to hate what he has done badly. Find your iniquity and begin to hate. He does not even think about the fact that God acquires his sin and, having acquired it, hates both the sin and the sinner. Ps.36:4. The words of his mouth are iniquity and flattery. Lawlessness is in those reproaches that were done to Christ; and the flattery is that, intending to lay snares for Him, they approached Him with flattering words. If you don’t want to understand, please the hedgehog, voluntarily removing himself from doing good. Ps.35:5. Think iniquity in your bed: present yourself to every evil path. Depicts the vigilance of the Jews in their malice against Christ. that is, he did not hate malice. Ps.35:6. Lord, Your mercy is in heaven. Shows that by the grace of the Lord, heavenly beings were also created, that is, rational powers. Ps.35:7. Your truth is like the mountains of God. You have shown that the promises spoken by the prophets are true and certain. For the heavens mean the prophets; and You showed that they are true, revealing such a multitude of truth that it is likened to the mountains of God. Your destinies are many. Since You have so much truth and righteousness, I don’t know why You are patient? Your destinies are as inaccessible to sight as the abyss. Just as its depth is incomprehensible to people, so the understanding of Your destinies is unattainable. God save men and beasts. The Apostle, having said about two peoples: “God shut everyone up in opposition, that He may have mercy on everyone,” added: “Because His judgment has not been tried” (Rom. 11: 32-33). Similar things are said here. since the psalmist intended to tell about the salvation of two nations, which are men and cattle, and men mean the Israelites, as those taught by the Law and understanding “the best” (Rom. 2:18), and cattle, as foolish, the pagans, the Jews, taught the mystery by the Law and the Prophets, fell away, and the pagans, who had never heard of it, were accepted: then for this very reason he said preliminary: “Your destinies are many.” And one more thing: “humans” he calls those who have retained reasonable dignity, and “cattle” - those who bow down to the earth and feed on earthly wisdom. Therefore, he called not only the righteous, but also sinners to salvation. Ps.35:8. The sons of humanity have hope in the shelter of Your wing, i.e. You will be the patron and helper of the gospel word. Ps.35:9. They will be drunk with the fatness of Your house, and I will give you a stream of Your sweetness to drink. The stream of sweetness is Christ, according to what was said: “I cast down upon you, like a stream overflowing with the glory of tongues” (Is. 66:12). But He is also the source of life, and light from light. Ps.35:12. Let not the foot of pride come upon me. Asks to be free from passion. And let not the hand of a sinner move me.
