Chapter 23

Finally, a psalm to David, one from the Sabbaths. This psalm preaches about the ascension of the Lord, about teaching the pagans, and about how they will be made worthy of heavenly villages. Ps.23:1. The Lord's earth and its fulfillment. These words preach the kingdom that the only begotten Word of God assumed over the pagans. Ps.23:2. He founded it on the seas. So that any of the enemies would not think that the earth was in the power of Satan and now Christ had just reigned over it, he shows for this that Christ is its creator, and at the same time makes it clear His power from the fact that he established such a vast earth on the waters. And on the rivers he prepared, - that is, arranged, - and there is. For the Church also receives strength when, amidst troubles, it remains unshakable in the faith. He prepared “on the rivers” so that the rivers would have an unrestricted outcome, and the mountains and forests would be separated for animals, and the fields and plains would be designated for dwellings and cultivation for people. Ps.23:3. Who will ascend the mountain of the Lord? Having expounded the doctrine of faith, he also explains the doctrine of works, so that we who listen may acquire for ourselves the true inheritance of both. Ps.23:4. Innocent in hand and pure in heart. This is stated in Psalm fourteen Those who do not take their souls in vain. He calls arrogance vanity. And they do not swear by their sincere flattery. Ps.23:5. They question the heavenly Powers, marveling at the miracles of house-building. The powers are amazed that they see Him in the flesh, animated by a rational soul. That is why they ask: “Who is this King of glory?” Ps.23:10. The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.
