Chapter 18

Ps.18:1. Finally, a psalm to David. The present psalm contains the original teaching offered to the Gentiles on behalf of the Apostles; That’s why it is said that the sky, the sun, and other elements, revered by the pagans as great gods, sing songs to their Creator. Ps.18:2. The heavens will tell the glory of God. This is similar to what was said: “His invisible being, from the creation of the world, was understood by created things, and His essence and ever-present power and Divinity are visible” (Rom. 1:20). Ps.18:3. Day days is regurgitated by the verb, and night. Day and night, he says, orderly and harmoniously prepare the course for each other, and by their very deeds they preach their Creator. Ps.18:4. Not the essence of speech, below words. Reading with punctuation; the objector interrupts the speech. The objection is this: and of course they don’t say? Therefore, he answers: aren’t there things that, without uttering a voice, preach about the artist? Of course there is; for even in a well-built ship the art of the shipbuilder is visible; and we also see it in other things. Therefore, the creatures numbered above preach the Creator by their greatness, beauty, and beautification, so that Ps.18:5. Their broadcast went out into all the earth. Place Your village in the sun. In the sun, he says, “put a village” or a house. Where is this, if not in the above-mentioned sky and firmament? He also called this house a palace. Just as day and night preach the Creator with their orderly agreement, so the sun, by harmoniously completing its course, proclaims the power of the One who rules over them. Ps.19:8. The law of the Lord is blameless, convert souls, - that is, the law of the Gospel. But just as the pagans, already taught by the elements mentioned above that there is one Creator, finally learn the Gospel law; so the souls of all pagans will turn to the truth. The testimony of the Lord is true, making little children wise, - the testimony that the Only Begotten gave about Himself: “I have come as a light into the world” (John 12:46); and: “I have departed from the Father, and I go to the Father” (John 16:28); and: “I am life” (John 14:6), making babies wise, establishing the Apostles. Or, he calls babes those who have become babes in Christ, and people who are foolish and unskilled in wisdom. Ps.18:9. Justifications of the Lord's right, gladdening the heart, - understands our justification at the trial. For, having carried out judgment on us, he drove out the prince of the age, giving us joy in our hearts. The commandment of the Lord is bright, enlightening the eyes, - that is, the eyes of the mind. She spreads her rays far. Ps.18:10. The fear of the Lord is pure, abide forever. This is said as being the opposite of legal fear, which refers to punishment. Our purity is abstinence from sins. Therefore, fear is called pure, because it makes people pure, because through the fear of the Lord a person avoids evil. But since fear is eternal, it makes those in whom it occurs eternal. Ps.18:12. For I am your servant. The new people, who have been honored with the secret knowledge of the Gospel laws and have vowed to preserve true judgments, send up prayer to find themselves pure in the thoughts of their minds, as well as to get rid of the demons attacking from without. Always save, the reward is many. For the reward for preservation will be blessings, “for which no eye has seen, nor an ear heard, nor has the heart of man sighed.” (1 Cor. 2:9).
