Chapter 137

Psalm to David,.. Zechariah n. This psalm contains a prophecy about the calling of all nations, for which David gives thanks; because he was not the only one of the kings to be vouchsafed the Divine Theophany, but many pagan kings would also be vouchsafed the same grace, which will be upon the coming of the Lord alone. Ps.137:1. Let me confess to You, Lord, with all my heart. The Savior gave this commandment to the rich man, saying: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength” (Luke 10:27). And before the Angels I will sing to You: Ps.137:2. I will bow to Your holy church. As if in the presence of Angels, ever-present spectators of his victory according to God. And let us confess to Your name about Your mercy and Your truth. I will bring, he says, thanks for the fact that I am getting rid of the shadow and being honored with the truth. For You have magnified Your holy name above all. He says that he gives thanks because of the calling of the pagans. I thank you not only because the benefit was shown to me, but also because I see Your glory in everything - the glory of the creator, the benefactor, the punisher. For there is no creature that does not preach Your greatness. Ps.137:3. Increase me in my soul by Your power. Multiplication refers to longevity. The meaning of the speech is this: by Your power you will transform me from corruption to incorruption. Ps.137:5. And let them sing in the songs of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord. He inscribed the songs of the Lord, which he commands all pagan believers to sing. Ps.137:6. For the Lord is high and looks down on the humble Don’t be surprised, he says, if this happens to people; because human affairs are not alien to the providence of God. And high news from afar. For, according to the word of the divine Apostle, God, from the foundation of the world, determined the calling of the pagans and their elevation to heights. Ps.137:7. If I go in the midst of sorrow, live for me. This is similar to what was said: “You will be in a world of sorrow: but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). My enemy has stretched out Your hand to anger. For the right hand of the Father is exalted to them, that is, the Son, who saved us. Ps.137:8.
