Chapter 126

Song of Degrees to Solomon. The eighth song is sung when the foundations of the church have already been laid, and the Israelites hope that what they have built will be unshakable. Therefore, the Psalmist secretly prophesies about the future fall of the church again under the rule of the Romans. It also adds a prophecy about the Church of Christ. The song is sung prophetically by Solomon, as are, no doubt, the psalms of Zechariah and Haggai. The eighth canto is rightly considered the beginning of the New Testament. Ps.126:1. For the promise and blessing of God in children is given as a kind of reward to those who put their trust in God. The fruit of the womb is the salvation of the spirit, according to what is said: “we suffered, and gave birth to the spirit of salvation, which we created on earth” (Is. 26:18). Sonhood will be given as a reward and, as it were, as an inheritance of this fruit. Ps.126:4. Like arrows in the hand of a strong man, like sons who have been shaken off. “Shocked” he calls the outcasts from the people of the first; Their sons, that is, the Apostles, became the arrows of the Mighty One, with which he shot down the opposing forces. Ps.126:5. Blessed is he who gets his desire from them. Of these, he pleases those who take advantage of the teaching. They will not be ashamed when they speak against their enemy in the gates.
