Chapter 12

Ps.12:1. Finally, a psalm to David. David sings this psalm, bringing repentance for sin and together preaching the gospel of our salvation. This psalm gives us an example of how, while in sin, we should flow to God. Ps.12:2. How long, Lord, will you forget me completely? Sin seemed to make the path to God through repentance long for him. How long will You turn Your face away from Me? Angels can see this face. Ps.12:3. How long will I put advice in my soul? I grieve, thinking in my soul about not dying in sin: and this most of all causes illness to my soul. Sickness in my heart day and night, – a daily concern in the heart. How long will my enemy rise up against me? If our enemy the devil humbles himself when we are godly; it is clear that he ascends when we sin. For the humiliation of men is the exaltation of Satan. Just as it is said about God that He is exalted by our salvation, so it is said about the devil that he is exalted by our destruction. Ps.12:4. Enlighten my eyes; - means the eyes of the mind. For it is said: “Illuminate for yourselves the light of knowledge” (Hosea 10:12). Ps.12:6. I have trusted in Your mercy. I firmly hope to receive forgiveness for sin, raising my thoughts to Your mercy, by which You have granted salvation to all people.
