“The Assumption into Heaven (assumptio) of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, in Polish “wmebowzie ë cie Najswieetszej Maryi Panny” in the Roman Catholic Church belongs to the category of the greatest holidays: “duplicia primae classis (double first class)”. But this category, which embraces 16 holidays, in addition to the so-called twelve holidays (excluding the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the Presentation, classified in class 2), also includes the days of the most important saints (all saints, the Baptist, Joseph the Betrothed, Peter and Paul, a church or local saint), as well as holidays of a later establishment (the body of Christ, the heart of Jesus). Preparations for the holiday of believers begin on August 14, which constitutes the “vigilia” (Christmas Eve) of the holiday, in conjunction with the after-feast of the martyr. Lawrence (from August 10) and the daily saint (Eusebius). At Matins, one of the two Gospel readings (Luke 11:27–29) is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos (about the exclamation of one woman: “Blessed is the womb that bore You”) with a conversation on it from Bl. Augustine and the following prayer: “God, who has deigned to choose for His dwelling the virgin palace of the blessed Mary, grant, we ask, that we, protected by Her protection, may become pleasant participants in Her triumph.” At the liturgy, the entrance Ps. 44:13 b, 15–16. “They will pray to Your face...” because of fasting it is not said, “Glory to God in the highest”; the prayer is the same as at Matins; instead of the Apostle Sir. 24:20–25 about the sweetness of Wisdom; graduale (prokeimenon): “Blessed and worthy are You, Virgin Mary, Who, without decay, found the mother of the Savior. Virgin Mother of God, Whom the whole world cannot contain, was enclosed in Your womb, becoming human.” The Gospel of Luke - what is in the liturgy; offertorium (verse for the offering of Gifts): “Blessed are You, Virgin Mary, who bore the Creator of all, who gave birth to Him who created You, and remain a Virgin forever”; secreta (secret prayer): “Grants to us, Lord, may Thy mercy grant us the prayer of the Mother of God, whom You then relegated from this present age, so that She might reliably intercede with You for our sins through the same Lord”; communion: “Blessed is the womb of the Virgin Mary, which bore the Son of the Eternal Father,” after communion: “Grant, O merciful Lord, help to our weakness, so that, anticipating the feast of the holy Mother of God, we, with the help of Her intercession, may rise from our untruths, through the same Lord Jesus.” From the service of the holiday itself, hymns are common to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and other Mother of God holidays: 1. “Rejoice, star of the sea.” 2. “Whom the earth, the sea, the stars honor.” 3. “O glorious one among the maidens.” See R.B. pp.177–178. “We ask Your servants, O Lord, to despise their sins, so that we, being unable to please You with our deeds, may be saved through the intercession of the Mother of Your Son, our Lord, Who lives with You.” The Service of the Dormition has only this one prayer, which is repeated in the prescribed places (other holidays have 2-3 special prayers). Antiphons and responsors are unbiblical The Holy Mother of God was ascended above the faces of angels to the heavenly kingdoms. Come, let us worship the King of kings, whose Virgin Mother was taken into the ethereal sky. The doors of heaven are opened to us by You, Who now triumphs in glory with the angels. Mary was taken into heaven; The angels rejoice, glorifying and blessing the Lord. Blessed are You, Virgin Mary, who bore the Lord, Creator of the world: You gave birth to the One who created You. Rejoice, Virgin Mary, - You alone destroyed all heresies throughout the world. Make me worthy to glorify You, O sanctified Virgin; give me strength against my enemies. After the Nativity, You, Virgin, remained incorruptible - Mother of God, intercede for us. Mary the Virgin is taken into the palace of life, in which the King of kings sits on a starry throne. Blessed are you, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, who believed in the Lord: what was said to you was fulfilled in you: behold, you are exalted above the faces and angels. Intercede for us before the Lord our God. Blessed are You, Daughter, from the Lord, for through You we have shared in the fruit of life. Today the Virgin Mary ascends to heaven; rejoice, for She reigns with Christ forever. Biblical antiphons and responsors Wise virgin, where are you going, all shining as the dawn? Zion's daughter is all slender and pleasant, beautiful as the moon, graceful as the sun. Blessed are You among women and blessed is the Fruit of Your womb. I saw a beautiful one, like a dove, overlooking the river banks; her invaluable fragrance was excessive on her clothes. And how on spring days flowers of roses and lilies of the valleys surrounded her. Who is this who walks through the desert like a column of smoke from the aromas of peace and incense? I am like a lofty cedar on Lebanon and like a cypress on the mountains of Zion; like the chosen ointment, I gave a pleasant fragrance. And like cinnamon and balm, I smell fragrant. Who is this who comes out like the sun and is slender like Jerusalem? The daughters of Zion saw her, and pleased her, and called her queen. With your appearance and your beauty, strive, succeed and reign. God will help her with His face: God is in the midst of her, and does not move. As if we all rejoice in dwelling in you. All generations will bless Me, for the Lord has done great things for Me; He is strong and holy is His name. And His mercy endures throughout all generations of those who fear Him. Grace has poured out in your mouth; Therefore God has blessed you forever; myrrh and aloes and cassia from your garments, from the ivory houses, from which the king's daughters delighted you in your honor. We run to the fragrance of your ointments; the young women loved you excessively. You are beautiful and elegant, daughter of Jerusalem, terrible, like a line of camps. Those as on other Mother of God holidays. At Vespers: 109, 112, 121, 126, 146. At Matins: 8, 18, 23, 44, 45, 86, 95, 96, 97. The Capitula of the Assumption is based on everything from the book of Jesus son of Sirach about the sweetness of repose in God and in His inheritance, while at Vespers, Matins (its part called ad Laudes) and the 3rd hour there is one and the same passage: 24: 7–8, and at the 6th and 9th hours the other two: 24:11 b–13; 24:17. Readings (lectiones) at Matins: 1st chapter of the Song of Songs (about the beauty of the Beloved), divided into 3 readings: 1–5; 6–9; 10–16; (in the first part of Matins, in primo nocturno); word of St. John of Damascus on the Assumption “Today is the sacred and animated ark of God” - also in 3 readings (in the second part of Matins in II nocturno); Gospel reading from Luke. 10:38–42 about Christ’s visit to Martha and Mary, and “Blessed is the womb that bore Thee...” and the conversation of Blessed. Augustine on this Gospel story (in this case, the Gospel and part of the conversation constitute the 1st reading, and the rest of the conversation - two other readings - all this in the 3rd part of Matins - and in III nocturno). Input: “Let us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating the feast day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary, at whose ascension the angels rejoice and praise the Son of God.” Ps. 44 "I will burp my heart..." Prayer - as in other services (see above). Instead of Apostle: Sir. 24:7–17 - about the repose and exaltation of Wisdom. Graduale (prokeimenon): Ps. 44:5 b, 11 “For the sake of the truth...”, “Hear, daughters...”. Alleluia: “The Virgin Mary is ascended into heaven, the army of angels rejoices.” Gospel: Luke. 10:38–42 – Christ’s visit to Martha and Mary. Offertoriut (to bring the Gifts): “The Virgin Mary is ascended into heaven, the angels rejoice, praising and blessing the Lord. Secreta (secret prayer): “May the prayer of the Mother of God come to the aid of Your people, O Lord, Whom, although we know her to have passed away (migratte) according to the condition of the flesh, may we feel in heavenly glory interceding with You for us - through the same Lord.” Raefatio (exclamations preceding the Eucharist) is common on the feasts of the Mother of God with the insertion: “And You in the Ascension (Dormition).” Involved: Lk. 10 “Mary chose the good part.” Upon communion: “Having become partakers of the heavenly table, we tearfully implore Thy mercy, our God, that through the ascension of the Mother of God we may be freed from all threatening evil through Her intercession - through the same Lord.” A folk custom in the Catholic Church coincided with the consecration of grain and garden plants to coincide with the Assumption, which is why the Assumption is colloquially called by the Poles “the holiday of potions” (zielna). The basis for the custom is that the Dormition is the most significant holiday of the time of year when these plants ripen (cabbage, radish, etc. are blessed with ears of various kinds). The custom is also observed in Orthodox churches in Western Russia. The after-feast of the Assumption in the Catholic Church ends a day earlier than ours - August 22, so that together with the holiday there are 8 days (ostaya). On the days after the festival (infra octavam), the prayer (above) of the holiday and some of the verses of the holiday are repeated. Several new ones are being added to the latter. Here they are. “The Lord desired the daughter of Jerusalem, adorned with necklaces. “Seeing her, the daughters of Zion proclaimed her most blessed, saying: Thy name has been poured out in peace.” “The Queen appeared at Your right hand in a gilded robe, girded with stripes.” The readings for the after-feast are all new (except for the Gospel). On different days the following readings are scheduled in honor of the holiday (alternating with readings in honor of the daily saints): the Gospel story about the Savior’s visit to Martha and Mary, extracts from the Song of Songs (about the beauty of the Beloved from chapters 4, 5 and 8), the 2nd word of St. John of Damascus on the Dormition “We have received from ancient tradition”, conversation by Bl. Augustine on the mentioned Gospel story and Bernard's conversation on the Assumption. The service of an ordinary saint, like ours, is combined with the service of the post-feast, but the latter, more than ours, overshadows the service of the holiday, especially since the post-feast of the Dormition includes such great saints for the Catholic Church as the martyr. Lawrence (paying tribute to his memory, celebrated, like the Assumption, for 8 days) and Abba Bernard. The service of an ordinary saint is not canceled, as is done with us, in order to celebrate the holiday, but only the holiday is given more space during the service on this day than on other days of the post-feast. The Resurrection, which occurs “within” the feast of the Assumption, is dedicated by the Catholic Church to the memory of “St. Joachim the Confessor, father of the blessed Mary and the Virgin" (for us - September 9, after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary). On this day, all Assumption prayers, readings and poems are replaced by those in honor of St. Joachim 472. According to the different view of the Roman Catholic Church on the Most Holy Theotokos and Her Dormition, the latter is depicted differently on the icons: under the guise of the Mother of God being carried by angels to heaven, but over an open tomb.
