Unmercenaries and Wonderworkers Cosmas and Damian · St Theodota, Mother of Cosmas and Damian

Из другого канонического послания Василия Великого к епископу Амфилохию Иконийскому Правило 86 Василия Великого

Machine translation from the original · Show original
To a number of enkratites (abstainers) their important objection: why do we not eat everything, but this is answered: as we abhor our eruptions. For in terms of value for us, herbal potions are the same as meat: and in judging the benefits, just as in a potion we separate the harmful from the healthy, so in meat we distinguish the harmful from the beneficial. For hemlock is a potion, and hawk meat is meat: but no one in his right mind will eat henbane, or even touch dog meat, unless in great need. Therefore he who ate did not commit iniquity. (Ap. 51, 53; Ankir. 14; Gangr. 2; Basil Vel. 1, 28, 47). This rule is taken from the message of Basil the Great, written in 376 to the same Amphilochius of Iconium 111. It concerns the same encratites about whom Basil speaks in canons 1 and 47, and who, abstaining from meat, reproached the Orthodox for abstaining from certain dishes. The refutation of these complaints is what this rule contains. Er. 236 (al. 391), p. 4 (Migne, s.g., t. 32, col. 881–2). You might be interested in:
