Since, during the invasion of the barbarians, many committed crimes against faith in God, swearing pagan oaths and eating some defiled food, sacrificed to idols with sorcery: then let them be dealt with according to the laws and rules already issued by the fathers. Those who, having endured severe exhaustion by torment, and not having endured suffering, were brought to renounce Christ, shall not be accepted into the church for three years, after which, let them listen to the scriptures for two years, and fall down for three years, and then they can be accepted into communion. Without great need, those who betrayed their faith in God, and touched the demonic table, and swore by pagan oaths, may be expelled from the church for three years, listen to the scriptures for two years, pray while falling for three years, and stand during prayer with the faithful for another three years, and then they can already be accepted into communion with the holy mysteries. (Ap. 62; I Universe. 10, 11, 12; Ankyr. 1 – 9; Peter Alex. 2 et seq.; Basil the Great. 73, 82). Regarding apostates who repent and turn to the church, Basil the Great prescribes that the orders that have already been issued by the fathers (παρά τών πατέρων) should have force, namely: the rules of the Ancyra Council, which say in detail how to deal with those who, during times of persecution, worshiped idols. The apostates about whom Saint Basil speaks in this canon and for whom he, along with the Ancyra rules, prescribes the appropriate penance, are those who were subjected to cruel torture and, out of their weakness, succumbed to violence, even if not great, for for apostates, who, of their own free will and without violence from the tormentors, renounced Christ, the same Basil the Great, in his 73rd canon, prescribed that they must repent throughout their lives and only before death can they be awarded St. participles.
