Let him who has defiled himself with his paternal or maternal sister not be allowed to enter the house of prayer until he abstains from his lawless and vile act. Having come to the consciousness of a terrible sin, let him cry for three years, standing at the doors of houses of prayer, and asking those who enter to pray, so that everyone with compassion would bring earnest prayers for him to the Lord. After this, for another three years, let him be allowed only to listen to the scriptures, and after listening to the scriptures and teachings, let him be expelled from the church, and let him not be rewarded with fellowship in prayer. Then, if he asks for it with tears and falls before the Lord, with contrition of heart and deep humility, then he will be given another three years to fall. And thus, when he shows fruits worthy of repentance, in the tenth year may he be accepted for prayer with the faithful, without communion: standing for two years during prayer with the faithful, finally may he be worthy of communion with holy things. (Basily Vel. 67; Gregory Neokes. 11). In his 67th rule, Basil the Great prescribes a twenty-year penance for άδελφομιξία (incest between brother and sister). In the present rule, he prescribes a twelve-year penance for persons who have had sexual intercourse with their paternal or maternal sister. The sinner must endure this penance publicly, going through all four stages of repentance in turn.
