Let the fornications of those dedicated to God not turn into marriage, but let their copulation be dissolved in every possible way. For this is also useful for the establishment of the church, and will not give the heretics an opportunity to reproach us, as if we were attracting to ourselves by allowing sin. By persons included in the canon (κανονικούς), in this rule are meant those who entered the clergy unmarried (Ap. 26), and then monks and nuns who took a vow of virginity. A clergyman who has fallen into fornication (πορνεία) is deprived of his rank (Ap. 25). Meanwhile, there were those who, having lost their rank as a result of fornication, insisted that they had the right to marry the woman for whose sake they had lost their rank, and argued that such a marriage could not be prohibited to them 35. Saint Basil draws attention to this, and, moreover, in the interests of church order and priestly dignity, as well as the dignity of the monastic order, and in order to protect the church from criticism from heretics, such as the Eustathians (Gangr. 1, 4, etc.), he prescribes that no one who is included in the canon and has fallen into fornication should be allowed to continue to live with a woman with whom he fell into fornication, and also less so, to enter into a legal marriage with her, but one must in every possible way (παντι τρόπψ) try to separate them and dissolve their illegal and sinful relationship.
