Our fathers forbade the wives who committed adultery and confessed it out of piety, or were convicted in any way, to do so openly, lest we give cause for the death of those convicted: but they commanded them to stand with the faithful, without communion, until the time of repentance was fulfilled. (Ap. 48; Trul. 87, 93, 98; Ankir. 20; Carth. 102; Basil Vel. 21, 31, 35, 36, 46, 48, 58, 77, 80). This rule is an exception to rule 58 of the same holy father. For adultery, Basil the Great prescribes a fifteen-year penance there, which must be endured publicly and in a certain sequence; in the present rule, publicity is not required, since the case concerns a woman who has committed adultery, which did not become public, but was discovered by her confessor during the confession of the sinner herself, be it a voluntary confession or forced by circumstances. For such a case, Basil the Great prescribes that such a woman is still subject to penance, and, moreover, is deprived of Holy Communion during the time prescribed for adulterers; only she does not endure this penance publicly, standing together with other sinners at the required degrees of repentance, but she is allowed to stand in church in prayer with the faithful, so that it does not appear that she has committed a grave sin. This is what Saint Basil prescribes, bearing in mind the weakness of women in general, so that, if possible, such a woman’s sin, which could have a harmful effect on the reputation of both her family and society itself, is kept from publicity.
