Saint Cyril was the nephew of Archbishop Theophilos of Alexandria, who greatly valued him for his intelligence and learning and promoted him. After the death of his uncle, Saint Cyril in 412 was elected to the see of Archbishop of Alexandria and ruled the Church until the day of his death in 444. Having initially learned from Theophilus a dislike for Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Cyril was enlightened by the appearance of the Mother of God and since then has revered his memory. He became famous for his theological works, especially in denouncing Nestorius. In 426, after unsuccessful attempts to reason with Nestorius, Saint Cyril convened a Council in Alexandria, at which his 12 anathematisms against the Nestorian heresy were adopted. On his initiative, Emperor Theodosius convened the 3rd Ecumenical Council in Ephesus, at which Saint Cyril presided and Nestorius was deposed. After the death of Saint Cyril, his creations had a great influence on the definition of the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon.
