Some pretended, like David, who acted like a fool to save himself from death, although he was not mad. They did not directly write a renunciation of the faith, but, in very cramped circumstances, they mocked the tricks of their enemies, just as sensible and reasonable children laugh at foolish children: for example, they either passed by idol altars, or gave handwriting, or appointed pagans in their place. Although some of these, as I heard, were shown leniency by some of the confessors, because with great care they avoided lighting fire with their own hands and burning incense to unclean demons, and although they, without noticing, did it out of foolishness: however, let them be given six months to turn to God in repentance. For in this way, these too will receive greater benefit by meditating on the prophetic saying: from a child a Son was born to us, and to us was given, whose rulership was on his frame, and his name is called great angel of counsel (Isa. 9:6). This line, as you know, in the sixth month after the conception of another youth, who preached before his entrance, repentance for the remission of sins, was also conceived in order to preach repentance. For we hear both preaching, firstly, not only about repentance, but also about the kingdom of heaven, which, as we have been taught, is within us (Luke 17:21), since there is a verb near us, which we believe, in our mouths and in our hearts: about which kingdom, having received a reminder, they will learn to confess with their mouths, that the Lord is Jesus Christ, believing in their hearts, for God raised Him from the dead. For we hear that with the heart one believes the truth, but with the mouth one confesses for salvation (Rom. 10:8–10). (Ap. 62; Ankyr. 1, 6; Petra Alex. 7; Gregory of Nyssk. 2).
